Chapter 8
Upon hearing the story ofĀ Ihwaās past,Ā YulianaĀ instinctively held her breath.
āI want to feel the happiness I tasted at that meal again. But the one who gave it to me isnāt here now.ā
āIām sorry.ā
āIād like to entrust that to you. Iāll reward you generously. Itāll make a good reputation. But if you fail… youād better brace yourself.ā
A sharp, piercing gaze, like that of a griffin, focused onĀ Yuliana. Despite there being nothing about her that seemed weak, for some reason,Ā YulianaĀ couldnāt shake the feeling that the old lady looked very worn out.
YulianaĀ smiled slowly and nodded. Making food that brought strength to someone tired was, after all, a form of joy.
āYes, Iāll see you in a week!ā
The old lady left and mentioned that she would send the Countās chef. Shortly after, the chef arrived and toldĀ YulianaĀ about the foods the Countess couldnāt eat and those she disliked. However, the Countess was picky in a different sense.
āDid you say there are no foods she dislikes or likes?ā
āYes. She doesnāt have any particular preferences.ā
The chef, whose body was as large as a mountain and looked kind, laughed heartily. He looked like a hippopotamus with his round cheeks, and he sympathized greatly when he saw the awkward expression onĀ Yulianaās face.
āSheās indifferent to everything she eats.ā
āHas it always been like that?ā
āYes, itās always been this way in the mansion. It made it difficult for us in the kitchen.ā
If someone dislikes something, you simply avoid it. If they like something, you make more of that. But it was far harder to match the tastes of someone who was indifferent to everything. It was discouraging to keep cooking with effort for someone who never reacted to anything.
āHas there been any dish she ever liked?ā
āUnfortunately, thereās nothing memorable. The previous head chef was the same…ā
āThe previous head chef?ā
āAh, Iāve been the head chef since three years ago. It was after the master passed away.ā
Three years ago was whenĀ IhwaĀ closed her restaurant and disappeared, and also when the old lady ate that ādelicious food.āĀ YulianaĀ leaned forward, her excitement evident.
Even the most delicious food in the world, with the most intoxicating smells, wouldnāt taste good if the timing was wrong. Perhaps the old lady wasnāt someone who simply didnāt enjoy food, but someone with her own untold reasons.
āThe master passed away?ā
āYes. I believe itās been about 4 or 5 years.ā
āIs it possible to meet the previous head chef?ā
Perhaps the old ladyās loss of her husband had made all food taste bland. If that were the case,Ā YulianaĀ wanted to ask the previous head chef about the dishes she used to enjoy with her husband. If she could serve her a dish that reminded her of those happy times, perhaps she could rekindle some memories and taste the food once again.
āThe previous head chef has passed away. Iām his son.ā
āOh, I see. Thatās unfortunate.ā
YulianaĀ slumped her shoulders. It was too easy to expect things to work out smoothly.
āI thought it might be due to grief from losing her husband,ā she said.
āEr⦠I donāt think thatās the case.ā
The chef gave a sheepish smile, his plump cheeks shaking.
āMy father always told me that the master wasnāt hard to please, but the mistress was extremely difficult to satisfy.ā
āSo, itās been that way for a long time?ā
āYes. No matter what delicacies were served, she always ate with an indifferent face. No matter what we served, half of it was left on the plate.ā
āIs that soā¦ā
Curious,Ā YulianaĀ asked about desserts, but the answer was the same. Even the cake the chef mentioned was an exquisite cream cake made from the Countās traditional recipe. The Countās cream cake was renowned in the capital, and many ladies enjoyed it at tea parties.
āTheĀ YationĀ peaches, preserved in honey, were served with ice.ā
āYationĀ peaches?ā
āBut the Countess was the only one who didnāt enjoy them.ā
TheĀ YationĀ peaches were famous for their sweet and overflowing juice, known by everyone in the empire. They were only available for a short time in early summer, so nobles often went to great lengths to acquire them.
YulianaĀ had also gone toĀ YationĀ withĀ IhwaĀ to taste them. After making peach wine with peaches that couldnāt be sold, the owner had laughed heartily and allowed her to taste the finest peaches.
āStill, she drinks alcohol. She enjoysĀ Citrine RobellaiĀ in the winter.ā
āThat strong liquor?ā
āYes, she often drinks it with cheese.ā
Citrine RobellaiĀ was a very strong liquor thatĀ YulianaĀ remembered well. Even at a large inn she had stayed at while traveling to the capital,Ā Citrine RobellaiĀ was sold. Though she hadnāt tried it herself, the strong scent of the liquor in the air made it clear that it was a very high-proof drink.
āGoodbye, and thank you.ā
āItās nothing. Please, hang in there. We gave up trying to satisfy the mistressās tastes a long time ago.ā
Though she received some consolation from the Countās chef,Ā YulianaĀ felt a huge wall in front of her. Despite asking the same question several times, she hadnāt received any satisfying answers.Ā Countess EdithĀ had a terribly short appetite, and though she would drink some strong alcohol, it was hard to even get her to drink tea or water on time.
DillonĀ approachedĀ Yulianaās leftoverĀ HongyeopĀ tea and flicked his tongue.
āI can see why sheās so thin.ā
āWhy is that?ā
āWhat do you mean,Ā Yus?ā
āIām curious about why she doesnāt eat.ā
āSome people just donāt enjoy food.ā
But it was said thatĀ Countess EdithĀ had likedĀ IhwaāsĀ food.Ā YulianaĀ wanted to makeĀ Countess EdithĀ taste the food she enjoyed, hoping that she would unknowingly finish her plate. She didnāt want her to feel the unpleasant fullness of a stuffed stomach but the happy satisfaction of a well-fed one.
After a momentās hesitation,Ā YulianaĀ decided to head for theĀ Crystal Orb Hall.
āWhere are you going?ā
āTo theĀ Crystal Orb Hall.ā
āDidĀ HenryĀ tell you theĀ Moonlight Magic Code?ā
āOf course.Ā HenryĀ has a lot to ask me as well.ā
If someone had theĀ Crystal OrbĀ that was properly exposed to moonlight, and they knew the magic code tied to theĀ Crystal OrbĀ of the other person, they could converse through the orbs. SinceĀ YulianaĀ couldnāt afford to buy an expensiveĀ Crystal Orb, she planned to borrow one from the nearbyĀ Crystal Orb Hall.
She took off her apron, wrapped herself in a yellow cloak, locked the door tightly, and headed for the street.
āExcuse me!ā
YulianaĀ turned around to see a man running towards her. He had silver hair, shining like polished silver coins, and it seemed familiar to her, like she had seen him somewhere before.
āExcuse me, isĀ IhwaĀ back?ā
Someone was asking aboutĀ Ihwa. She felt like she had seen this person before.
āPlease, please tell me, whatās the relationship betweenĀ IhwaĀ and my mentor?ā
āOh. Itās you.ā
A fierce smile, reminiscent of a young chick, appeared onĀ Yulianaās face. Though his hair color and length had changed, she recognized him. He was the rogue she had met shortly after arriving in the capital. The man who had promised to turn her into a star, dried by the sea winds for three months.
She pointed at him with her index finger and spoke firmly.
āNo, I donāt know anyone namedĀ Ihwa. Even if I did, I wouldnāt know them. So, donāt come near me again.ā
āYou wouldnāt be walking around in an apron if you didnāt knowĀ Ihwa. Please.ā
āHey.ā
YulianaĀ was about to snap at him but hesitated for a moment. Unlike when she first met him, the man now appeared very well-groomed. Even though she wasnāt knowledgeable about nobility, she could tell that this man was a noble. She could easily tell just by the white sword at his waist.
āAre you, by chance, a noble?ā
āDoes it⦠not look like it, lady?ā
āIf you are a noble, I have something Iād like to ask.ā
The man nodded absently, his eyes lighting up. It seemed like his mind had been awakened. In any trade, one had to hold the thing the other person wanted.
āI might know something aboutĀ Countess Edith. Do you know her well?ā
āCountess Edith? Yes, I do.ā
āHmm⦠Do you know her well?ā
āWell, I know as much as anyone else.ā
YulianaĀ pondered for a moment. The man was being elusive and didnāt make it clear how well he knewĀ Countess Edith, almost like a clam unwilling to reveal its shell. After a while,Ā YulianaĀ nodded.
āAlright. If you tell me aboutĀ Countess Edith, Iāll let you ask me one question aboutĀ Ihwa.ā
āOne question?ā
āWell, if you donāt want to, you can go find someone else.ā
āDo you have any noble friends who would answer your question?ā
It seemed that the man thought he had won, butĀ YulianaĀ wasnāt so easily swayed. She crossed her arms, and as she glanced at the direction of theĀ Crystal Orb Hall, she knew it was time to leave.
Once again,Ā YulianaĀ chose to leave without any regrets. She turned sharply, and the silver-haired man was left bewildered as he watched her walk away.
