Chapter 40
Consensio Parking Lot.
Eun-young checked her list one last time and made sure all the luggage was packed.
âThis is the last one.â
Just then, Eun-woo appeared from the direction of the office, lifting a large box in his arms.
Under his rolled-up sleeves, the veins stood out along his forearms, tracing over lean muscle.
âIâm really troubling you again,â Eun-young said apologetically.
âJust think of it as paying you back for the last meal. Iâll go wash my hands real quick.â
With a faint smile, Eun-woo headed toward the restroom.
âWow⊠why am I the one getting butterflies?â Ari murmured.
âSnap out of it,â Eun-young replied.
âI didnât even dream anything! What am I, Cinderella? You always pick on me.â
âDonât worry. No one in their right mind would mistake you for Cinderella. Now stop talking nonsense and check this.â
Eun-young tossed her the checklist.
âTch. Still⊠just looking at him makes me happy,â Ari said, smiling shyly toward the parking area where Eun-woo had disappeared.
âSince when did you two get so close?â she added suddenly.
âWhat are you talking about?â Eun-young asked back.
âYou two went to the hospital together this morning. Isnât that enough to say you know everything about each other?â
Eun-young gave Ari a sharp glare.
âCut it out. Thereâs probably a reason.â
âA reason? Please. If a man accompanies you to get an IV drip, thatâs already the end of the story.â
âDid you check the items?â
âI did! Geez, youâre just as curious as I am.â
Ari pouted but reluctantly started organizing the rest of the supplies.
âShh.â
Eun-young hushed her when she saw Seon-hee coming out, holding a box.
âWhatâs so funny?â Seon-hee asked as she loaded the box into the trunk.
âNothing you need to know,â Ari muttered.
Seon-hee blinked, puzzled, and looked at Eun-young, who just shrugged.
Soon after, Eun-woo returned and loaded another large box into the car.
âIs this the last one?â he asked.
Ari quickly checked the list.
âYes! All done.â
She gave the brightest smile she could manage.
âYouâre going to get a cramp from smiling that hard,â Eun-young muttered, shaking her head.
Ari shot her a glare, then turned back toward Seon-hee and Eun-woo.
âOkay then, shall we head out?â
Her cheerful tone prompted everyone to start getting into the van.
âWoof! Woof!â
Just then, Rabong, who had been quiet until now, started barking toward the back.
âWhatâs wrong, Rabong? Come here.â
Seon-hee picked the dog up, but it wouldnât stop whining.
Puzzled, she followed Rabongâs gazeâtwo familiar faces were walking toward them.
âR-Representative Woo?â Ari spoke before Seon-hee could.
Step. Step. Step.
The tall man stopped right in front of Seon-hee, scanning everyone before asking in a calm, low voice:
âWhere are you going?â
Seon-hee looked at him, her expression stiffening.
âItâs the campaign today. Did you forget?â
âNo, I remember. It just looks more like a picnic to me.â
Gyeon-heeâs eyes flicked to the lunch boxes loaded in the car.
âAh, thatâs just to help team bonding! Ha, haâŠâ Ari cut in awkwardly.
âTeam bonding?â
He frowned, clearly unimpressed. Ari shrank back, taking a step behind the others.
âDo you really think this is the right way to do things? Do you even understand how important this campaign is?â
His cold tone froze the air.
Eun-young, unable to watch any longer, stepped forward.
âYou asked us to handle it, so let us do our job. Donât worry.â
âYouâre the ones making me worry.â
âCome on, itâs just a small childrenâs home. I donât think you need to get personally involved.â
âThose are exactly the kinds of places the media loves to jump on. A poorly handled campaign could do more harm than good. And when that happens, who takes the hit? Your company? NoâKidsFan does.â
Eun-young fell silent.
She wanted to argue, but she knew he was right. The losses would fall squarely on them.
âI guess Iâll have to come and personally supervise.â
âWhat?â Seon-hee asked in surprise.
But Gyeon-hee wasnât really asking her opinionâhe turned to his secretary instead.
âSecretary Kwon, what do you think?â
âUh, yes, sirâof course, thatâs probably best,â Kwon stammered, clearly flustered.
âAny objections?â
âNo, butâŠâ
KidsFan, as a subcontractor, had no grounds to refuse him.
ââŠFine,â Seon-hee finally said, stepping in for the speechless Eun-young.
âThatâs the first decent answer Iâve heard today,â Gyeon-hee said with a nod.
âLetâs go.â
Seon-hee, unwilling to argue further, gave the signal to board.
But before anyone else could move, Gyeon-hee climbed into the van first.
Everyone froze, exchanging bewildered looks.
âWhat? Arenât you getting in?â he called from the back seat.
âWhat are you doing?â
âYouâre coming with us?â
Seon-hee and Eun-young asked almost in unison.
âThereâs room. Itâs only logical to share one carâit saves costs.â
âStillââ
âWhy? Is there a problem?â
Seon-hee bit her lip, glaring at him silently. He ignored her and turned to his secretary.
âWell? Get in.â
âAhâyes, sir.â
Reluctantly, Kwon got in beside him.
âHaâŠâ
Seon-hee sighed, exasperated, but before she could say anything, Eun-woo gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
âJust let it go.â
ââŠBut still.â
âIâm fine. Actually, this might be fun.â
With a relaxed smile, Eun-woo took the driverâs seat.
Seon-hee, looking annoyed, glared once more at Gyeon-hee and got into the passenger seat.
âWhy is she sitting in front?â Gyeon-hee demanded.
Seon-hee kept her eyes forward, refusing to answer.
âIf itâs because of managing things, have Secretary Kwon sit up there instead. Heâs excellent at taking care of people, right?â
âAh, yes⊠Iâm pretty good at it,â Kwon replied nervously, starting to move.
âNo. I just want to stay as far away from Representative Woo as possible.â
âWhat?â
Gyeon-hee frowned, clearly offended.
âLetâs go, Director,â Seon-hee said curtly.
âW-wait!â
Before he could stop her, Eun-woo stepped on the accelerator.
âAck!â
The sudden movement threw Gyeon-hee off balance, bumping the back of his head against the window.
He glared at Eun-woo through the rearview mirror.
âOops, forgot to tell you to hold on,â Eun-woo said with a pleasant smile.
âStop theââ
Before he could finish, Eun-woo turned the wheel sharply toward the parking lot exit.
A box from the cargo area tumbled off and hit the back of Gyeon-heeâs head.
âOw!â
He cried out again, clutching his head.
Snickers erupted inside the car.
âHaâŠâ
Embarrassed and defeated, Gyeon-hee sat back down. He couldnât winânot while Eun-woo was driving.
Just waitâŠ
He clenched his fist, jaw tight.
Later, on Jayu-ro.
The white van sped smoothly toward Paju.
Eun-woo and Seon-hee were chatting and laughing up front.
âWhat are they even talking about? Can you hear them?â Gyeon-hee asked irritably.
âHuh? What?â Secretary Kwon replied absently.
ââŠForget it.â
The laughter and conversation filled the vanâall except for Gyeon-hee, who stared out the window in silence, frowning.
He glanced toward Seon-hee again. Though her stomach pain from the IV had eased, her back still hurt; she kept shifting in her seat, trying to get comfortable.
âLaughing like that when sheâs hurtingâŠâ he muttered, frowning deeper.
As he sighed, the van turned into a quiet parkâs parking lot.
âWeâre almost at our destination,â Eun-woo announced.
Everyone looked out the windows.
âWow~â
The golden grass stretched under a bright blue skyâbeautiful even without full greenery.
âWhy are we here?â Gyeon-hee asked stiffly.
âWe need to eat, donât we?â Seon-hee replied flatly.
âWhere?â
âIn the park, while we take a short break.â
Without waiting for a response, she got out of the car.
âLetâs go. We should eat too,â Kwon said.
Reluctantly, Gyeon-hee followed.
âWhere exactly are we eating?â
âWeâll find a spot now. Please wait a moment, Iâll go look around.â
Seon-hee started walking into the park to find a place to sit.
Suddenly, Gyeon-heeâs back gave a painful twinge. The ache had been there all day, and chasing after her only made it worse.
âSeriously⊠what a hassle.â
Frowning, he strode forward and grabbed Seon-heeâs arm.
âWhat are you doing?â
âStay here.â
âWhat?â
âYouâre in pain, arenât you?â
Seon-hee blinked, startled, staring at him.
âIâll go look. You stay right here.â
His face was still tense as he turned and walked off.
ââŠDid he eat something weird?â
âWhatâs gotten into him all of a sudden?â
Eun-young and Ari whispered in shock near the car.
Seon-hee stood silent, eyes following his back as he walked away.
Then Eun-woo approached her quietly.
âDonât worry. Iâll go with him.â
Reassuring her with a smile, Eun-woo hurried to catch up with Gyeon-hee.
As he left, Ari ran over to Seon-hee.
âAre they⊠fighting?â
âFighting?â
âDidnât you see Representative Wooâs face? He looked furious the whole way here. What if he takes it out on you later?â
Ariâs anxious words made Seon-heeâs chest tighten even more.
âHaâŠâ
With a sigh, Seon-hee looked at the two men walking away. Then, as if making up her mind, she turned to Ari.
âIâm going after them.â
âHuh?â
Before Ari could stop her, Seon-hee started running toward the two men.
