Chapter 11
Family
âHey, morning, Matsunaga! New term starts today, huh?â
âUh⊠morning?â
Summer vacation was over, and as soon as I stepped into the classroom, Yasuura came up to me.
Iâve never talked to him before.
His sudden greeting caught me off guard.
Whatâs this about?
âYou, the other dayâyou went to Lake Haruna, right? Man, lucky you! A date with two cute girls, huh?â
He slapped my shoulder.
Ah.
So he saw us.
Guess he happened to be there the same day.
âBy the way, Ikeya and Kawabe saw you too. No way youâre talking yourself out of that one.â
âIt wasnât a date. We just went to hang out, the three of us.â
âDamn, Iâm jealous. Share one with me, will ya?â
Yasuura laughed crudely.
âAmi isnât some thing to hand over, you know.â
âOh-ho, calling Nakajima-san by her first name? You two sound pretty close.â
âSheâs my childhood friend.â
âHuh, really? Didnât know that. Then what about the other oneâthe silver-haired beauty?â
âSheâs my girlfriend.â
âWhatââ
Yasuura froze, mouth open.
Ding-dong-dang-dongâŠ
The school bell rang.
ââMatsunaga! Youâd better be ready to tell me everything later!â
Yasuura shouted across the room.
Today was the first day of the second term, so we didnât have any regular classesâjust the opening ceremony in the auditorium.
Some students would stay afterward for club activities, though.
After School
The opening ceremony ended early, so we got out before noon.
While I was packing up, Ami came over from the neighboring class.
âYuya, letâs go home together?â
âOh, so youâre Nakajima Ami?â
Right then, Yasuura butted into the conversation.
âThatâs me. And what do you want?â
âYasuura saw us at Lake Haruna, apparently. Got jealousâthought it was a date or something.â
(Three people together doesnât exactly scream âdate,â thoughâŠ)
âOh, so thatâs when it was. I didnât notice him there.â
âI was just leaving in the car with Ikeya and the others. Saw you from inside.â
âNakajima-san, how about being friends with me?â
âHmm? I donât know⊠should I?â
The girl next to me shook her head quickly, gesturing âdonât do it.â
Ami tilted her head curiously.
âNakajima-san, no offense to Yasuura-kun, but you really shouldnât.â
âHey! Yamabe, butt out!â
Yasuura shoved Yamabe.
Pretty rough behavior.
âYou okay?â
I rushed over instinctively.
Girls are fragile; I hoped she wasnât hurt.
âThanks, Matsunaga-kun. âŠYasuura-kun, see? This is exactly what I mean. Nakajima-san, heâs nothing like Matsunaga-kun.â
My name suddenly came up.
Itâs not like comparing us helps anything.
âIf I had to pick, Iâd go for Matsunaga-kun. He seems kind. Donât you think so, Nakajima-san?â
âWell, Yuya really is kind. But unfortunately, he already has a girlfriend.â
Ami had already figured out about me and Chamomile.
Not that I was hiding it or anything.
âAh⊠I see.â
The girls sighed and looked back and forth between me and Yasuura.
âBy the way, where are Ikeya and Kawabe? Donât tell me they went home already?â
Yasuura looked around.
Now that she mentioned it, his usual sidekicks werenât around.
âWhy arenât they here today of all days? I was gonna have them talk me up to Nakajima-san⊠useless idiots.â
So heâd planned to use his friends to make himself look good.
We decided to head home.
ïŒ
âIâm home.â
âWelcome back, Yuya. School ended early, didnât it?â
Chamomile greeted me at the door, wearing an apron.
Having someone waiting at home like this⊠it feels nice.
Comforting.
âHuhâŠâ
My vision blurred.
When I wiped my eyes, my fingers came away damp.
âWhatâs wrong⊠Wait, why are you crying?â
Huh? Why am I
***
Three years agoâ
When I came home from school, the house was dark and empty.
The landline phoneârarely usedâstarted ringing, and I got a bad feeling.
When I answered, it was the police.
âDad! Mom! No⊠this canât beâŠâ
Theyâd been taken to the hospital by ambulance.
I rushed there in a taxi.
A hospital staff member led me to a roomâ
Inside were two covered bodies on beds.
âYuya⊠are you okayâŠ?â
A voice came from behind me.
It was my uncleâI hadnât even noticed him there.
He said the injuries were bad, that the faces were barely recognizable.
I donât remember much else after that.
My uncle asked me to come live with him, but I refused.
I was about to enter high school, and I didnât want to leave this houseâ
The home filled with memories of them.
âYuya?â
Chamomile was peering up at my face.
I mustâve worried her.
âSorry, I was just⊠remembering something from a while ago.â
Iâm not alone anymore.
Chamomileâs here with me now.
âIf youâre tired, you should rest. âŠI heard youâd be home early, so I tried cooking lunch.â
âI thought I smelled something good. Youâre still not used to the appliances in this world, right? You donât have to push yourself.â
ââŠCanât promise itâll taste good, though.â
Chamomile blushed shyly in her apronâ
like a new bride.
If I ever had a wife that cuteâŠ
Iâd be the happiest man alive.
