~Chapter 33~
The cafĂ© âFin Brownâ was even more crowded than I imagined.
It was truly one of the hottest places in the city.
Thankfully, Eric and Sophia took seats on the terrace, so we were able to sit right behind them.
â…I ordered quite a lot⊠but Iâm not sure if itâs okay to spend so much with My Ladyâs money.â
While Richard went to order, I listened carefully to Sophiaâs words from behind.
When I glanced, it was only two cups of tea and four slices of cakeâyet she already regretted it.
Clearly, she hadnât spent a single coin until now.
âYou need to eat as much as you want in a place like this, or else you wonât even manage to spend a single gold coin.â
âThatâs true⊠but it feels wrong to splurge with My Ladyâs money.â
âNo need to think too much. My Lady ordered you to spend it, so just spend it.â
âYouâre rightâŠâ
Good job, Eric!
It was a relief that Eric firmly reassured Sophia when she hesitated.
If only they could do something more romantic together, that would be perfect.
Coming to a cafĂ© alone together was progressâbut I wasnât satisfied with just that.
âIsnât it too sunny to sit here?â
âOh, youâre back?â
Richard returned with a tray, setting down the drinks and cakes before sitting across from me.
âYou brought them yourself?â
âThey were ready, so I waited and carried them over.â
âI see.â
As always, he never flaunted his status as a prince. I admired him again for that.
âOh-ho.â
âI asked them to put ice in the coffee, just as you requested. The staff worried the flavor might fade.â
âNo, itâs perfect. Thank you.â
I praised him and took a bite of the lemon cheesecake I had ordered.
âMmmâ. This cake is amazing.â
It was better than I expected. Maybe Western desserts really were on another level.
âTry it. Now I see why so many people come here.â
I pushed my cake toward the middle so Richard could taste too.
But my eyes were on the untouched carrot cake in front of him.
It must be delicious too, but I couldnât take the first bite before him.
âIf you want some, go ahead. I donât really enjoy cake anyway.â
Noticing my longing gaze, Richard slid the carrot cake toward me.
âOh, but I said Iâd buy it for you⊠then Iâll just try one bite.â
âThis is insane.â
The carrot cake was heavenlyâsoft texture, faint carrot scent, and the perfect sweetness.
It was the best carrot cake Iâd ever had.
âThat good?â
Richard smiled faintly at my constant exclamations.
I might look like I was exaggerating, but it was truly divine!
âIf you donât eat this, youâll regret it. You have to try.â
âIâll taste it slowly. In the meantime, check on your knight. It looks like theyâre wrapping up.â
âAlready?â
I had been so distracted by the cake that I forgot about Eric and Sophia.
Quickly, I focused on their conversation again.
âHow much did we spend, Sir Eric?â
âNot even ten silver coins.â
âI didnât realize spending two gold coins would be so hard. Weâre too full to eat moreâŠâ
Sophia sounded troubled.
Ah, if only they thought of watching a play or an opera!
That money was meant for things like that, not just simple food.
For reference: 100 silver coins = 1 gold coin. They hadnât even spent 5% of what I gave them.
âThis isnât money commoners like us can spend in a day.â
âBut if we donât use it all, My Lady might be disappointed.â
ââŠThen letâs split the money and go separately.â
âThatâs a good idea! I also want to pick a gift for My Lady.â
âWhat?!â
That wasnât the point!
I gave them the money so theyâd stick together, not to separate!
âWhat do I do? Is there no good idea?â
Feeling desperate, I acted.
âAh!â
Holding a glass of iced coffee, I deliberately bumped into Sophia just as she stood up.
The coffee spilled all over her clothes.
âIâm so sorry! Are you okay?â
âYes, Iâm fine.â
âThank goodness it wasnât hot.â
Thanks to the voice-changing herb Richard gave me earlier, they didnât realize it was me.
âEach leaf lasts about three hours, right?â
I thought about when to chew another.
Meanwhile, Eric rushed over to check Sophiaâs condition.
âSince I dirtied your clothes, let me pay. Please come with me to the clothing shop nearby.â
I had no better plan, but at least this way theyâd stay together.
But Sophia quickly shook her hands.
âYou donât need to. I wasnât paying attention either.â
âNo, I insist. I canât stand owing anyone.â
âButâŠâ
âIf you walk around like this, itâll be uncomfortable. Please, just stop by. Your lover can come too.â
Richard suddenly joined in and slyly pointed at Eric.
âWow. Heâs actually helping me this time!â
I was touched by Richardâs quick thinking.
But then Eric frowned.
âWeâre not in that kind of relationship.â
Eric! You like Sophia, donât you?
I expected denial, but not such a cold one.
If Sophiaâs affection dropped, it would be badâher score wasnât high to begin with!
âEither way, itâs better to go together. Surely you wonât let two young ladies walk the streets alone?â
ââŠAnd youâre not coming?â
âI have urgent business. Iâll join later. The clothing shop is straight ahead on the left. Whether your plan with that stiff knight works out or not, good luck.â
ââŠYouâre right. Iâll go with her.â
âOh my, thank you.â
I seized the chance to pull Eric along.
But I still wondered: what urgent business did Richard have?
As Eric and Sophia packed up, I leaned closer to Richard.
âDid you see something suspicious?â
âNo. Donât worry. Iâll finish quickly and catch up. Do your best with your plan.â
âAlright. Thanks for telling me.â
Richard supported me until the very end.
I didnât know why, but since he helped, I had to succeed.
With that thought, I prepared to push Eric and Sophiaâs affection much higher.
