~Chapter 32~
âH-how did you know it was me?â
The maids had put special makeup on me and even gave me a wig. Unless someone looked very closely, it shouldâve been hard to recognize me.
But Richard saw through it instantly, which surprised me.
âOf course Iâd know. But why are you dressed like that?â
âOh, I disguised myself because I needed to follow someone.â
âFollow? You mean that shady-looking knight?â
âWhaâ! How do you know about that?â
He was clearly talking about Eric.
How strange. Richard had recognized me in disguise and even guessed who I was tailing.
If it wasnât some kind of divine intuition, thenâŠ
âWait, were you following me too?â
âDonât be ridiculous. I was just keeping an eye on this area and happened to see that knight.â
âOh⊠I see.â
For a moment, I thought he mightâve been secretly watching me.
It was just a joke, but since Richard had seen Eric nearby, they couldnât be far.
âYou couldâve asked someone else to follow him for you.â
âWell, itâs more like watching over than spying. Today is going to be an important day for Eric.â
âSo thatâs why the knights are hiding their presence?â
Richard muttered while scanning the surroundings.
âAs expected of the male leadâs instincts.â
I couldnât sense even a shadow, but he had already figured out where some of my hidden guards were.
âIf youâre sneaking around, wonât it be obvious with guards nearby? Anyway, youâre not really alone, so itâs fine, right?â
ââŠI think it would be better if I stayed with you.â
âSuddenly?â
âThis place is always crowded, and that means a lot of shady things happen. Recently, there have even been reports of missing people. Now that I think about it, you being in disguise might actually help my investigation.â
That made sense⊠but why did he have to be with me?
âIf we move around like normal people, we might run into the culprits. Thatâs why I suggested it.â
So he wanted us to blend into the crowd, like an undercover investigation.
Now I understood why he was insisting on sticking together.
âIf it makes you uncomfortable, Iâll find another way.â
âNo, itâs not uncomfortable. If anything, following me around will annoy you.â
âThat doesnât matter. As long as youâre fine with it, Iâll stay with you. I wonât let anything happen to you.â
âWell, in that caseâŠâ
It wasnât a bad offer.
With Richard, I wouldnât need to sneak around, and it would definitely be safer.
The only problemâhis ridiculously handsome face would have to be hidden.
âYou should change your clothes first. You stand out too much.â
âAlright. Iâll go change and meet you at the plaza in ten minutes.â
âMake sure to cover your face! Thatâs the most important part.â
Richard nodded and returned to his waiting knights.
Right after, the female knight who had been tracking Eric and Sophia reappeared.
âTheyâre at the jewelry shop on the west side right now.â
âThank you. ButâŠâ
âIâll keep watching and report their location again in ten minutes.â
âOhâthank you so much!â
I felt bad for giving her more work, but she offered first. She mustâve overheard my whole conversation with Richard.
With nothing more to worry about, I headed toward the plaza to wait for Richard to come back in disguise.
Hmm.
I met Richard again, but when I saw his disguise, I couldnât help but sigh through my nose.
He noticed my reaction and frowned, clearly displeased that I kept making noises without saying anything.
âJust say it if somethingâs wrong.â
âTsk⊠itâs just kind of awkward.â
âWhat do you mean by awkward? Explain.â
âWell, the clothes are fine, the wig and the hat are fine too⊠but your face still stands out too much.â
He really had tried to disguise himself, but his dazzling looks couldnât be hidden so easily.
Honestly, could beauty like that even be covered? Still, if we wanted to walk around in peace, we needed something stronger.
âIs there anywhere here that sells glasses?â
âThereâs a shop down that alley.â
âLetâs go. We need to hide you more.â
Sure enough, when we went into the alley, there was a small glasses shop.
Unlike jewelers or clothing stores, this place wasnât crowded, which was a relief.
âWelcome,â said an elderly gentleman, bowing politely.
We greeted him and began looking over the display.
âLetâs see⊠a monocle is useless.â
âWho will be wearing them?â
âOh, this man here. His eyes are fineâitâs just for fashion.â
âAh, so this handsome gentleman will be the one wearing them?â
The shopkeeper carefully looked through the shelves and laid out a few designs.
âAll of these are so stylish. Thatâs a problem.â
Wouldnât that just make his face stand out more?
Richard tried on one or two pairs, and of course, instead of hiding anything, the glasses made him shine even brighter.
âThis wonât do. Donât you have something that actually covers the eyes?â
âWell⊠only these party-style ones, butâŠâ
âThatâs exactly what I want!â
The shopkeeper awkwardly brought out a pair of glasses with spirals drawn on the lensesâstraight out of a webtoon.
âYes! This is perfect for you!â
ââŠIt doesnât feel very good.â
Even though his looks still leaked through, his face finally looked closer to normal. I clapped my hands in satisfaction.
Richard, however, frowned, clearly knowing this was not a compliment.
âDidnât you say you wanted fashion glasses?â
âI said it wrong. Not for fashionâthese are for hiding fashion.â
âHahaha! I see, I see. Iâm glad you found something you like.â
The shopkeeper laughed loudly at my joke.
I paid for the glasses, and Richard and I left the shop.
âCan you see well?â
âYou sure took your time asking.â
Richard answered gruffly as he adjusted the strange glasses.
Well, no one told him to come along with me.
Still⊠watching the male lead wearing spiral glasses was hilarious.
âHaha, I was just focused on covering your face. What? Is your vision bad?â
âNo, itâs fine. I can see well. Now that the disguise is done, letâs go.â
âRight, we should. So, Ericâs location isâŠâ
I glanced around, looking for my secret GPSâmy female knight.
Sure enough, she suddenly appeared from somewhere.
âAre you looking for Eric Gray and Sophia Nina?â
âYes, where are they now?â
âThey just went into a cafĂ© on the west side called âPin Brown.ââ
âThank you so much!â
âThen Iâll take my leave.â
With a simple, quick report, she disappeared again at lightning speed.
Richardâs eyes gleamed as he watched her go.
âImpressive movements. Sheâd be a great help if she joined the knight order.â
âHey, stop eyeing other peopleâs bodyguards.â
âJust tell her, if she ever quits being a guard, to join the order.â
âAlright, alright. Now letâs hurry before Eric and Sophia move again.â
I grabbed the overly enthusiastic scout and led him toward the west side.
