Episode 3
Eleanoreās mother-in-law, Katarina, was a cruel woman who loved to torment her for ridiculous reasons.
ā āDidnāt I tell you to greet me every morning? How dare you sleep in and ignore your elders!ā
Sometimes, Katarina even barged into Eleanoreās room before dawn.
That morning, she had dragged Eleanore out of bed while she was half-asleepāand slapped her hard across the face.
āEven now, I can still feel the burn on my left cheek from that day.ā
Eleanore gently touched her cheek with cold eyes.
Now, she was sitting in her room again, calmly sipping tea and making plans for the days ahead.
āAnd worse than Katarina⦠was her daughter, Simone.ā
If Katarina picked fights over things that never happened, Simone attacked her over the smallest mistakesānever letting go.
ā āSister, didnāt you say youād fix this account error yourself? Then why isnāt the money covered yet? Are you going to use your dowry to pay for it?ā
Usually, Eleanore wasnāt even allowed to handle household matters, but whenever there was a problem, Simone always dragged her in to take the blame.
ā āSister, about this tea partyāyou invited Lady Grace and Countess Snow, right? How could you invite two women who dislike each other to the same party? Are you out of your mind?ā
Even when it wasnāt a big deal, Simone would yell and make it one.
ā āWhy would my brother marry a brainless woman like youāsomeone who only knows how to dress up pretty?ā
Simoneās constant words crushed Eleanoreās confidence over and over again.
āShe was insane⦠truly insane.ā
In her past life, Eleanore had lost all self-worth because of Simone and ended up completely under her control.
But after dying such a miserable death, her view of the world had completely changed.
āMiss, would you like more tea?ā
The maidās quiet voice broke her thoughts.
Eleanore looked down and saw her empty cup.
āYes, please. Fill it for me.ā
She nodded gracefully and handed over the cup.
āThis maidās name is Becky. She was newly hired when I came to the Dukeās castle.ā
Eleanore watched Becky carefully as she poured the tea.
āIf Iām going to make allies, I should start with someone like herānew servants who havenāt yet taken sides.ā
The new servants were all chosen by the head butler, Hekit, who was known for being fair and neutral. That was a relief.
āBut I canāt forget that I already ārestartedā once because I shouted at her earlierā¦ā
Eleanore sipped her tea, lost in thought.
All those strange glowing words she had seen earlier flashed through her mind.
āIf my guess is right, that ārestartā system must beā¦ā
She set down her cup quietly.
āOh? Miss? Youāve already finished?ā
Becky blinked in surprise, seeing the cup still half full.
āYes, Iām done. I have somewhere to goācome with me.ā
Eleanore stood up elegantly.
Becky stared, momentarily caught by her graceful movements, then quickly bowed her head.
āW-where are we going, my lady?ā
āTo the Duchess Dowagerās quarters.ā
āW-what?ā
Beckyās eyes went wide in shock. Her lips moved, as if she wanted to stop her, but no words came out.
Eleanore just smiled faintly.
āOf course sheās surprised. By now, during my engagement period, Iām usually being bullied endlessly by Katarina and Simone.ā
While Walter (her fiancĆ©) was away from the castle, the mother and daughter made it their mission to ātrainā Eleanoreātormenting her under the excuse of teaching her noble manners.
After that, even when Walter returned, Eleanore had been too broken to ever fight back.
āBut this time⦠Iām going to end that vicious cycle.ā
Eleanoreās purple eyes gleamed coldly.
With her pale skin and dark hair, her expression looked almost ghostly.
āHiccup!ā
Becky flinched and hiccupped in fear, covering her mouth quickly.
āThereās no time to explain. Just follow me.ā
Eleanore gestured with a graceful hand.
Becky, still trembling, nodded and followed silently.
***
āIs that her? The one whoās supposed to be our lady?ā
āThey say sheās the Count of Vianelloās precious daughter. Actually born outside, but adopted into the family later.ā
āShh! She might hear you!ā
As they walked down the hall, whispers filled the air.
āThey pretend to whisper, but they want me to hear.ā
Eleanore smiled bitterly.
Except for Becky and a few new servants, everyone in the castle was loyal to Katarina or Simone.
They all looked down on Eleanore, treating her like a fake future duchess who didnāt deserve her title.
āLooks like Iāll have to change the atmosphere in this place too.ā
At first, she only planned to handle Katarina and Simone.
But now, seeing how everyone else behaved, she realized that wouldnāt be enough.
āItās not enough to just make them stop looking down on me. I have to make them respect me. If I donāt establish myself as the real lady of this house, theyāll crush me again.ā
If she could share a bedroom with Walter, things might changeā¦
Butā
āThat hateful man would never welcome me. Heāll just reject me again for the sake of that so-called āsaint.āā
Eleanoreās face turned cold as ice again, and poor Becky turned pale just from looking at her expression.
They walked a little farther until finally, they reached Katarinaās quarters.
āWait, this is the Duchess Dowagerās wing.ā
An older woman blocked their way.
Eleanore tilted her head gracefully.
āAre you trying to stop me?ā
Her calm, confident voice startled the womanāit was the head maid of the duchessās household.
āEleanore Vianello⦠speaking like that? Since when?ā
The head maid remembered her as an arrogant, foolish girlāsomeone who puffed herself up with pride but had no real strength or wit.
That was why she had never opposed Katarinaās plan to bully her.
But now⦠something was different.
āShe looks⦠calmer. Like someone whoās faced death and come back.ā
The head maid was still studying her when Eleanora smiled sweetly and said,
āI mean no offense. I simply wish to greet the Duchess Dowager, as is my duty. Would you kindly step aside?ā
The head maid hesitated.
āSo now sheās trying to curry favor with the Duchess instead of fighting back? How naĆÆve.ā
In her mind, the head maid thought Eleanoraās strategy was pathetic.
āIf peace were possible, Lady Katarina wouldāve offered it long ago. There canāt be two mistresses in one castle.ā
To her, Eleanoreās very existence was a threat to Katarinaās authority.
āWell, maybe itās better to let her see for herself how hopeless it is.ā
The head maid bowed slightly.
āVery well, Iāll inform the Duchess Dowager.ā
She turned to goābut Eleanoreās calm voice stopped her.
āWait.ā
āā¦Yes?ā
The head maid turned back, puzzled.
Eleanoraās lips curved into a beautiful, icy smile.
āIāll go with you.ā
