Episode 2
âAh!â
Eleanore screamed and sat up in bed.
Her heart was pounding hard, and cold sweat ran down her back like rain.
âI⊠I definitely⊠died.â
She muttered like a crazy person, touching her face and body.
âHow am I alive?â
She didnât understand.
The feeling of the axe blade touching her neck and the world turning upside down before her death were still too real.
Her whole body trembled.
Eleanore slowly raised her shaking hand and touched her neck with her eyes tightly closed.
âAh⊠haahâŠâ
When she realized her head was still attached, she gasped for air.
âIâm alive⊠Iâm really aliveâŠâ
Then she quickly pulled her hand away, afraid her head might actually fall off if she kept touching it.
As she sat there mumbling like a madwomanâ
Clink, clink.
The sound of a teacup hitting its saucer came from beside her.
âWhoâs there!â
âAh! F-forgive me, my lady!â
Eleanore turned sharply and saw a maid standing by her bed, trembling in fear.
The clinking sound came from the tray the maid was holdingâher hands were shaking too much.
âPlease forgive me, my ladyâŠâ
âWhat am I forgiving you for? What did you do?â
Eleanore asked in confusion, and the maid squeezed her eyes shut.
âI-I donât know, but I must have upset you somehowâŠâ
âI just came back from the dead, and youâre talking about tea cups? Thatâs not what matters right now!â
âAh! I-Iâm sorry!â
The maid flinched, terrified, staring at Eleanore like she had gone insane.
âI have to figure out whatâs going on.â
Eleanore pushed off her blanket and tried to stand, but her legs were still weak from the shock of dying. She stumbled badly.
âKyaa! My lady!â
âAh!â
The maid rushed forward to catch herâbut in her panic, she dropped the tray, spilling tea all over Eleanore.
Luckily, the tea was lukewarm, so she wasnât burnedâbut it was still extremely unpleasant.
âYou! What were you thinking! Are you crazyââ
Right thenâ
[NG!]
[You must not yell loudly at someone for an accident they didnât mean to cause!]
Large red letters flashed in front of Eleanoraâs eyes.
[Rehabilitation Project Restarting.]
And thenâpain.
An unbearable pain crushed her, and her vision went completely dark.
***
âAh!!â
Eleanore opened her eyes againâto the same familiar ceiling.
âOw⊠that hurtsâŠâ
She curled up on the bed.
The pain from the ârestartâ still lingered in her body like a bruise.
âWhat⊠is going onâ!â
She was about to shout again, but stopped herself.
The warning message about ânot yellingâ flashed in her mind.
âI never want to feel that pain again.â
Eleanore slowly sat up.
Clink, clink.
The same sound again.
When she turned, the same maid stood beside her, holding the tray and trembling just like before.
âYouâ you spilled tea on meââ
She stopped mid-sentence.
The tray and teacup were still perfectly fine, not spilled at all.
âWait⊠was I unconscious for a long time? But then why is this maid still hereâand why is everything exactly the same?â
She frowned. Something was very wrong.
âThis isnât a dream. I did die. And yet⊠everythingâs repeating?â
Then she remembered the word âRestart.â
Her eyes widened.
âWaitâdid my life just start over?â
Eleanore looked around.
There was a purple carpet embroidered with golden mythical beastsâthe one she had brought as part of her dowry during her engagement period.
âThat means⊠this is before I married that terrible man, Walter!â
The maid also called her âyoung lady,â not âmadam.â
That confirmed itâthis was before the marriage.
âTime really went backward. Iâm back before everything went wrong.â
Her body trembled with realization.
âBut then⊠why did it restart twice? Once at the execution, and again when the maid spilled teaâŠâ
She tried to think back, but her body still ached too much.
âAnyway, this is my second chance. Iâll live better this time.â
Eleanore clenched her fists, took a deep breath, and carefully placed her feet on the floor.
âGood. My legs are steady now.â
âY-young lady, where are you going?â
The maid hurried after her.
âIâm going to see the Duke.â
âW-what? ButâŠ!â
âNo buts. Just tell me where he is.â
The maid flinched.
âT-the Duke⊠isnât in the castle right now.â
âWhat? Then where is he?â
âH-he went to the Ors Mountains to subdue a group of monsters.â
Eleanore frowned.
âWhat? He left his fiancĂ©e alone to go monster huntingâah.â
Then she suddenly remembered.
âRight⊠Walter did spend the entire engagement pretending to be busy hunting monsters so he wouldnât have to see me.â
She only saw him twice during that whole periodâonce when she first arrived at his castle, and again right before the wedding.
âThat man⊠Iâll deal with him properly this time.â
In her past life, when she was truly twenty, she couldnât say a word against him.
Walter always ignored her, staying cold and distant.
But now things were different.
After four years of living in the same castle as him, she knew exactly how to handle him.
âWhen will he return?â
âI-itâs hard to say. Monster hunts can take a long timeâŠâ
âI know that. But if itâs the Ors Mountains, there must be an estimate.â
The maid blinked in surprise.
âHow does she know about the Ors Mountain expeditions? She just arrived at the Dukeâs estate!â
âW-well, usually it takes up to ten days⊠so maybe three more days before he returns.â
âThatâs enough.â
Eleanore nodded.
âSo I have about three days to survive here alone.â
The faces of her cruel mother-in-law and sister-in-law flashed in her mind.
âThree days until they start tormenting me again.â
