Chapter 10
âWowâŠâ
I hadnât even walked that far from the city center, but before me spread a view so stunning it couldâve been painted.
A vast blue lake shimmered under the sunlight, and beyond it, tall mountains rose into the clouds.
Just looking at the scenery made my eyes feel healedâit felt like a short vacation far from home.
I sat beside the man on a bench, both of us quietly gazing at the lake.
âHow is it? Do you like it?â
âI love it.â
He smiled faintly. Impulsive as it had been, inviting him to hang out was definitely the right choice.
âIâm glad. But why were you out alone so early in the morning?â
I explainedâhow my father was pushing me into marriage, even suggesting that old nobleman and Cedric, and how heâd given me one year to find someone he approved of.
I hadnât meant to go into such detail, butâ
âEight years older? Thatâs too much.â
âSure, marriage ties families, but parents should at least listen to their kidsâ opinions.â
His sympathetic reaction made it easy to keep talking. I almost let slip that I wasnât the original Yvonne.
âWhat about the man you met yesterday?â
Oh, right. Eric. Iâd already forgotten he existed.
âThat was our first and last meeting. Never again.â
He burst out laughing.
Glad my misery entertains you, I thought dryly.
âWhy? He seemed decent.â
âI thought so too, at first. But that day I learned my lessonâIâm never dating a swordsman again.â
âWhy? Did he threaten you with his sword?â
His expression darkened in an instant.
âThatâs pathetic.â
Whoa, that glare could kill. I hurried to explain before he decided to avenge me.
âNo, itâs not like that. Itâs justâheâs usually quiet, but the moment he sees a sword, he wonât shut up. I thought my ears would bleed.â
He blinked, then laughed softly again.
âAt least you escaped early. Still, isnât it extreme to swear off every man with a sword?â
âWhatever. Iâm traumatized now. Donât even mention swords around me.â
His lips tightened into a straight line.
Why did he look serious again? His face changed expressions faster than I could keep up.
In this world, commoners couldnât formally learn swordsmanship. Maybe he secretly admired swords? My harsh words mightâve struck a nerve.
âI donât mean everyone hates themâjust me. So donât take it personally.â
That should have comforted him, but his face still didnât relax. Mustâve hit a deep longing there.
âIsnât there somewhere to grab a quick bite around here?â
âHungry?â
âNot exactly. Just⊠a little peckish.â
I changed the subject to foodâpartly to ease the tension, partly because my mouth really did feel lonely.
Following him toward the entrance of the lakeside, I spotted a few small, shabby buildingsâa bakery, a snack shop, and a place selling grilled skewers.
I scanned them quickly and followed the mouthwatering smell of roasted chicken.
âTwo skewers, please.â
I fully intended to pay. After all, he was just a hardworking commoner living day-to-day.
But before I could pull out my purse, he handed over the money first.
âHeyâwhy are you paying? I was going to.â
I shoved the coins into his hand. His hand was twice the size of mineâprobably because of his height.
âItâs fine. Keep it.â
He frowned and pressed the money right back into my palm.
Guess his pride couldnât handle being treated by a woman.
âWhatâs the big deal? Friends treat each other sometimes.â
ââŠIâm paying.â
Before I could argue again, he turned and strode out of the shop with those long legs of his.
Well, if heâs that determined to spend money, fineâŠ
Exceptâhe forgot something crucial.
âHey! Youâre supposed to take the food!â
I grabbed the two skewers from the vendor and followed him out.
âYou left these.â
Handing him one, I bit into the otherâand instantly regretted it.
The skewer looked like the kind Iâd eaten before, but the spice hit like fire. It was aggressively bad.
Good thing I didnât pay for this.
I sneaked a glance at him. He didnât seem to like it either; his skewer was barely touched.
âThis tastes awful, doesnât it?â
âItâs⊠a confusing flavor.â
Our eyes metâand we both burst out laughing.
It was that kind of badâthe kind that was funny.
He took both skewers from me and tossed them into the trash bin.
âIf thereâs something else you want, tell me. Iâll buy it. Anything but skewers.â
âItâs fine. I just wanted a little snack. My bad.â
âNo, it was fun.â
âWhy?â
He stepped closerâtoo close. My throat went dry.
âBecause itâs the first time Iâve seen you laugh like that.â
I stared, dazed, at the smile that curved his lips.
It wasnât my fault my heart skipped. It was his fault for being handsome.
âBut heyâŠâ
He brushed a strand of my hair through his fingers.
My pulse spiked.
This is it. Heâs about to confess.
I thought back to how heâd flirted last time, asking if weâd met before. Yep, heâd definitely fallen for me. How should I reject him gently?
âSo⊠you really lived your whole life in Peronando? Never been to another empire?â
ââŠNo.â
He tucked the strand of hair behind my shoulder again.
My heartbeat instantly calmed.
Seriously? Why did he ask such dramatic questions for no reason? Heâd even asked that before!
âWhy do you keep bringing that up?â
âForget it.â
He fell silent, and the quiet between us grew heavier. I was getting tiredâand honestly, I just wanted to lie down.
âIâm tired. Iâm heading home.â
âIâll walk you to your carriage.â
We walked without speaking.
Heâd taken me somewhere beautiful, bought me food (even if it was terrible)⊠maybe Iâd been too cold to him.
âThanks for hanging out today. I had fun.â
âMe too. Call me again if you get bored.â
âCareful, I might take that seriously. Youâll regret it.â
âI wonât.â
My carriage came into view. I waved, climbed inside, and looked backâhe was still watching me through the window as we rolled away.
Then it hit me.
âŠI didnât even know his name.
âYoung lady, weâve arrived.â
Even though I was tired, I suddenly wished Iâd stayed out longer. The thought of facing Father made my feet heavy.
I stepped down from the carriage, dragging my steps toward the house.
âSister, where have you been?â
Nathan rose from a garden chair, and beside him stood a man I didnât recognize.
âJust out for some fresh air. Whoâs this?â
âNice to meet you. Iâm Richard Sylvain from the Duke of Sylvainâs householdâNathanâs classmate at the academy.â
The platinum-haired man bowed and kissed the back of my hand.
So my little brother does have handsome friends.
âPleasure to meet you. Iâm Yvonne Lambert, Nathanâs sister.â
âSister, Fatherâs looking for you.â
âFor me? Why?â
âIâm not sure.â
Oh no. Not another Cedric talk. Shouldâve stayed out even longer.
âIâll be going, then.â
After a polite nod to Richard, I trudged toward Fatherâs office.
God, I really didnât want to go. I was definitely a master of avoidance.
Episode 50
âLord Theo, did you enjoy your outing?â
âI did.â
Theo smiled faintly.
It had been recklessâabandoning work to wander off with someone else, reaching for her hair without thinkingâŠ
But it was true. Heâd enjoyed every second with her.
âOf course you did,â Mael muttered. âWhile I was handling your meetings.â
âHow did it go?â
âI managed to persuade themâfor now. Weâll meet again in two days.â
âGood.â
Theoâs expression suddenly turned serious.
Back in Norbert, heâd always worn that expressionless mask, but ever since coming to Peronando, heâd seemed lighterâuntil now.
What happened this time? Mael wondered uneasily.
Unable to hold back, he asked, âMy lord, did something happen while you were with her?â
âIs it that obvious?â
âExtremely. You look like the worldâs ending. Did she find out who you really are?â
âNo.â
Mael sighed in relief.
Then what couldâve possibly bothered him this much?
âThen what is it?â
âDo you think I should hide the fact that I can use a sword?â
âWhat? Why hide something that impressive? The woman already knows youâre skilled. She just doesnât know youâre alive.â
Mael frowned. His master was overthinking again.
No one could rival Theoâs swordsmanship anyway.
âShe saidâŠâ Theo hesitated. âShe doesnât like men who use swords.â
âŠWhat?
Mael stared blankly.
Why does it even matter if someone else hates swords?
Then realization dawned.
ââŠLady Yvonne?â
âYeah.â
âWell then,â Mael said flatly. âJust donât talk about swords.â
He felt strangely hollow.
None of this had anything to do with their actual missionâit was just his masterâs hopeless crush in full bloom.
He could only hope the infatuation would burn out soon.

â Whereâs Raphael? Bring him back!
â The heroineâs personality changed so much đ
â Fr, total character breakdown lately lol
â Did she go dark after getting dumped?? đ
â Theo keeps asking about Peronandoâwhat if sheâs not originally from there? đ
â Maybe she lived somewhere else as a kid and got adopted into the Lamberts??
â That last theory actually makes a lot of senseâŠ
