Chapter 8
āHow about you pick out your own sword, Eric?ā
āI actually needed a new one. Would you mind if I did?ā
āOf course not.ā
When I nodded, Ericās face lit up like a childās on their birthday.
Wow. He really loves swords.
I wasnāt interested in swords at allābut since it gave us something to talk about and made the atmosphere a little easier, I didnāt mind.
Weāll check out the longswords, then Iāll suggest we go somewhere else.
So far, things were going fine.
āThis sword is amazing. The bladeās broad, but the tip is sharpāgreat for both slashing and thrusting. And this oneās got a long handle and a thinner bladeāperfect for tight spots. Oh! And look at this oneāā
Oh, hell.
Where did the quiet, reserved Eric go?
The moment he stepped into the longsword section, he turned into a walking, talking encyclopedia.
Was he rapping right now? My ears were about to bleed.
I nodded along like I understood, but in truth, I was thinking about chicken feet.
Too bad they didnāt serve those here. I could really go for something spicy. Maybe Iād ask the chef to make some when I got home.
Honestly, I had no idea what he was talking about anymore.
āThereās a new sword model in the back. Would you like to see it? Itās a rare one, not shown to just anyone,ā said the shop clerk.
āThat sounds wonderful.ā
And off Eric wentāstraight into the back room.
Leaving me behind.
Uh, hello? Still here. Guess he forgot I existed.
āOh, incredible!ā
I heard his voice echo from the back.
So he can raise his voice.
I glanced over and saw him talking animatedly with the clerk aboutāwell, swords.
Honestly, I was glad I wasnāt in there. Listening to all that technical talk wouldāve been torture.
Itās so stuffy in hereā¦
After standing around for too long, I decided to step outside for some air.
Eric wasnāt the male lead material I thought he was. He was just⦠a sword-obsessed maniac.
Sorry, Louise. I appreciate the effort, but heās definitely not it.
āUgh, finally, I can breathe. Just marry your damn sword, you lunatic.ā
The cool breeze helped me relax, and before I knew it, my thoughts slipped out loud.
Not that anyone was around to hearā
āHaha.ā
ā¦Or so I thought.
Great. I was doomed.
So much for keeping my image intact.
Would he recognize me? Maybe I should just bribe him to keep quiet.
āThe other day, you were crying. Now youāre cursing?ā
The voice came from a side alley beside the shop.
Crying? Ohāthat guy.
The one whoād treated me like a beggar when I was sitting on that bench.
The one with black hair.
āOh, youāre the one who threw your coat at me last time. Thanks, by the wayāit scared my tears right back in.ā
āThat coat was mine. Not just anyone gets to have it.ā
āWhich is exactly why I left it there.ā
Good decision, past me.
āRight. No one would want it anyway.ā
The fabric had felt rough. Definitely not an expensive coat.
Since he used informal speech, I replied in kind.
You deal with rude people by matching their energy.
āIt was all I had to give,ā he said proudly. āMy way of offering comfort.ā
His clothes looked worn, and despite his lack of manners, there was a hint of sincerity there.
A poor man, clearly. But⦠annoyingly handsome for a commoner.
Still, his casual tone told me everything I needed to knowāhe didnāt recognize me. If he did, heād never dare talk like that to me.
āHave you always lived in Feronando?ā he asked.
āYeah. Why?ā
āI thought Iād met you somewhere before. Guess not.ā
āDonāt try anything funny. Iāll kill you.ā
At least he had taste. But his little flirt didnāt work on me. I glared in warning.
If heād been a noble, maybe Iād have let it slideāhe was handsomeābut no. Definitely not male-lead material.
I was still studying his face whenā
āMy lady, Iām sorry! I was too focused on the swords⦠I thought youād gone ahead.ā
Eric finally emerged from the shop.
So, the sword worship session had ended.
āItās all right. I just stepped out for some air.ā
āI see. Iām relieved.ā
The black-haired man chuckled softly before walking away.
Of course, a commoner wouldnāt understand the burden of a noblewomanās maskāsmiling even when she wanted to scream.
āDo you know him?ā Eric asked.
āNo.ā
āItās getting late. Allow me to escort you home.ā
We walked toward his carriage.
Neither of us spoke the whole way there.
Without his swords, Eric had nothing to say.
Finally, we arrived home.
āI had a wonderful time today. May I see you again sometime?ā
āā¦Sure. If Iām free.ā
If he were ugly, Iād have refused on the spot. But since he wasnāt, I left the door slightly openāthough truthfully, I didnāt want to see him again.
You probably enjoyed yourself drooling over swords. Maybe just marry one and be happy.
Eric, of course, mistook my vague response for encouragement and smiled brightly.
I gave a halfhearted farewell and went inside.
Iām exhaustedā¦
Maybe I was just drained from pretending to care about his sword talk.
Oh, rightāRaphael. Iād run into him at the restaurant earlier. Iād completely forgotten about that, thanks to Eric.
Should I⦠thank him for that? Whatever. Bed first.
I thought my suffering for the day was over. But then came the second trial.
āMy lady, the master requests you join him for dinner.ā
āTell him Iām not hungry.ā
āI canāt. He said he has something important to discuss.ā
I usually ate alone, claiming that family dinners made me uncomfortable. It workedāuntil now.
A family dinner, out of nowhere? Perfect. Iām already feeling sick.
Dragging my feet, I headed to the dining room.
āCome, sit down,ā Father said.
He and my younger brother, Nathan, were already seated.
And just like that, the most uncomfortable dinner of my life began.
Episode 48
āWho were you talking to?ā
Mael couldnāt hide his suspicion.
He and Theo had been walking down a side street when they spotted a woman with pink hair.
Theo froze.
Then, to Maelās shock, he actually approached her.
āIs he⦠smiling?ā
In over ten years of serving him, Mael had never seen that expression.
Sure, to most people it looked like a faint smirkābut for Theo, that was basically a full grin.
When Theo finally returned, Mael couldnāt help but ask, āWas that the same woman who was crying before?ā
Theo nodded. āYeah. Hard to miss pink hair like that. She said sheās lived in Feronando her whole life. Strange.ā
He frowned, lost in thought.
He was sure heād seen her somewhere beforeāthat hair, that face. But where?
Maybe Iām imagining thingsā¦
Mael didnāt see what the fuss was about. People resembled each other all the time. His masterās fixation was the real mystery here.
āI canāt let this go. Find out who she is,ā Theo ordered.
āPardon?ā
āThat woman. I want everything you can learn about her. Now.ā
So much for a peaceful evening.
Mael sighed inwardly and followed her carriage from a safe distance.
She was with a manātall, refined, clearly interested in her.
So sheās already seeing someone, he thought, watching the manās eyes never leave her face.
He almost pitied his master.
If Theo really was starting to feel something for her, it was better to find out the truth before those feelings deepened.
āSomething wrong?ā
Gerard glanced over at his friend, whoād been off all week.
Eric had joined the Imperial Knights three days agoāand hadnāt been able to focus since.
āI sent a letter asking for another date with the lady,ā Eric said glumly. āNo reply.ā
āDid something go wrong the first time?ā
āMaybe a small slip-up, but she said it was fine. We got along great! Sheās the first woman Iāve ever been able to talk to so easily.ā
Gerard blinked.
That was⦠not what heād heard.
According to Louise, the lady nearly swore off dating altogether because of that disaster.
No need to crush him with the truth, Gerard decided.
āGuess it just wasnāt meant to be,ā he said gently. āYouāre busy with training anyway. Plenty of time to meet someone else.ā
āYeah⦠maybe youāre right. Sorry for dragging you into this.ā
āItās fine. Letās just get back to practice.ā
As they resumed training, Gerard silently thoughtā
Thank goodness itās only the probation period.
āā¦ā
āā¦ā
The silence was suffocating, but that was normal at House Lambertās dinner table.
Still, the Dukeās next words managed to make things even worse between him and his daughter, Yvonne.
āHelp me prepare for my trip,ā he said suddenly.
That was enough to send the homebody lady fleeing the house entirely.
[Comments]
ā Wait, Ericās not the real male lead??
ā So Raphaelās regret arc is coming soon, right? Please tell me before I drop this š
ā Why is Yvonne suddenly swearing? Thatās so out of character š
ā Is this her villain arc starting?? lol
ā Honestly, she should just end up with Raphael again.
ā ā¦Did I just say Raphael deserves her?? Whatās wrong with me??
