~Chapter 39~
Delphina explained why she had started to like ordinary men.
âHandsome men tend to have a lot of women around them. Of course, not all of them are like that. But after experiencing a good-looking guy whoâs overly kind to everyone⊠I just got sick of it.â
Elcayan stayed silent.
âSo, I started liking normal guys instead.â
Then Delphina realized something.
âWait⊠doesnât Elcayan fit all those things I said I hated?â
He had a high status, good looks, and once he took off his mask, he would probably be super popular with women.
âAnd heâs also so kind⊠ugh.â
Delphina clenched her fists.
âHeâs too good for someone like me.â
If the First Prince became emperor, the North would flourish. Elcayan would become even more desirable than he already was. At that point, Delphina wouldnât even be able to look at him.
âSo when he wants to leave, Iâll let him go without hesitation.â
She gathered her thoughts and said,
âDonât worry. I havenât forgotten that weâre in a contract relationship.â
âNo matter how kind you are, I wonât get the wrong idea.â
Elcayan replied firmly.
âI appreciate you respecting our agreement.â
ââŠYes.â
âBut thereâs one thing I should tell you.â
âIâm not a kind person.â
âHuh?â
âIâm not the type to be nice to just anyone without reason. Iâm not like⊠someone else.â
The system window popped up:
<Who: Kasen Huart>
Elcayan looked straight at Delphina and said,
âIâm only kind to people I care about.â
âThen⊠who do you care about?â
âProbably people I like.â
As he said that, he gently laid a blanket over her lap. His eyes softened.
It was the most beautiful smile Delphina had ever seen.
Her heart pounded. Thump. Thump.
âItâs cold out, Delphina.â
He was being overwhelmingly kind.
âŠâŠâŠ
Meanwhile, Ahin looked down at his little sister.
Ever since they were kids, his twin sister Sestia had been frail. But today she spoke strangely.
âAhin, I had a dream.â
âWhat kind of dream?â
âGod was cheering for someone to âwin easily without effortââŠâ
âYouâre not still sick, are you?â
Sestia had often had prophetic dreams since she was littleâdreams that usually featured the god Frad.
Children born with strong divine power sometimes receive visions this way.
At first, the orphanage staff had high hopes for her. If she awakened divine power, the temple would support her.
But then, Head Priest Hadin had decided she was useless.
âSestia wonât be able to awaken divine power. And I canât let someone like her waste the High Priestâs valuable time.â
â…â
âFrankly, Iâm disappointed. I expected much more from you.â
âC-Canât I at least get tested by the High Priest?â
âNo. A useless girl like you isnât worth his time or divine power.â
Normally, Sestia should be on her way to the capital by now.
At age 15, any orphan who showed signs of divine power would go see the High Priest.
âBut Hadin didnât let her goâŠâ
Once old enough, kids were supposed to leave the orphanage and find work, which the temple arranged.
But Hadin had assigned Sestia a terrible fate: to become the third wife of an old noble.
âSince you wonât awaken divine power, becoming a nobleâs wife is the next best thing.â
It wasnât a suggestionâit was an order.
Baron Orman, her arranged fiancé, was over 30 years older than her and had already been divorced twice due to violence.
âHonestly, itâs a great opportunity for a common girl raised in an orphanage. Being a baronâs wife?â
From then on, the pressure began. Ahin and Sestia left the orphanage, but no one would hire them.
âEven the inn weâre staying atâtodayâs the last night. Weâre out of money.â
Sestia spoke in a quiet voice.
âI thought I had strong divine power⊠but now I know I donât.â
Ahin sighed.
They had grown up together in the temple orphanage. Though there were tough days, he liked having her with him.
âBut now, weâre not just hungryâwe could die out here.â
If they stayed in this town, Sestia might be forced to marry that awful noble.
âWeâll run away tomorrow.â
But money was always the issue.
Sestia muttered bitterly,
âRich people just live well without even trying. Like Hadin, that jerk.â
She pouted. Ahin didnât correct her.
âShhh. You shouldnât say that out loud. If youâre gonna curse someone, do it quietly so no one hears.â
She wasnât wrong though. Hadin definitely deserved it.
Sestiaâs expression darkened.
Even though she tried to act normal, Ahin knew she was scared too.
âIf I had power, Iâd crush them all.â
âSestiaâŠâ
âI donât want much. If God had just made me a high priestess, that wouldâve been enough. Damn it, God, really?â
Ahin shivered.
Sestia had changed. The hardships had made her bitter and power-hungry.
âEven though sheâs my sister⊠Iâm afraid of what she might do.â
If Sestia ever gained power, sheâd destroy the temple without a second thought.
Maybe Hadin sensed that, and thatâs why he didnât let her meet the High Priest.
âSheâs completely fallen. Turned cold and ruthless.â
Then Sestia said something shocking.
âIâm fine with marrying a man 30 years older than me.â
âDonât say that. Iâm never letting you marry that guy.â
âBut we donât have any other choice.â
âYes, we do.â
âLife isnât fair, Ahin. Just trying hard doesnât get you everything. I learned that the hard way.â
Ahin sighed deeply.
Sestia had become far too realistic.
Even though she was about to be forced into marrying a perverted old noble.
âWe canât always get what we want.â
âWhy are you so weirdly realistic about this stuff when you say crazy things all the time?â
âI have no choice.â
ââŠâ
âIâm not a child anymore. I used to dream of awakening divine power and becoming a priestess⊠but I know now itâs impossible.â
âSestiaâŠâ
âWe have to stop dreaming and start surviving. Even becoming a priest requires power. And I have none.â
YYAAAAAY!!! Looks like we found the right priest to heal out madam and open a church in the north! As the God said, he wants to make it easier for them. Also, who thebhell does this Hadin think he is?! Who is he to judge whoâs strong enough to be tested?! He needs to be removed ASAP, and even more so for how heâs treated our female lead in the past
That dang hadin or whatever his name is needs to face retribution!! He must be afraid sheâs gonna take his place because of her divine power đ€
