Chapter 20
âA New Target, A New Dilemmaâ
âAre all magicians a little weird?â
Phillippe whispered to Liamson like a ventriloquist.
âWho knows? Weâve only ever seen Lady Rosedale.â
Liamson smiled politely and whispered back.
In front of them, Rosedale had paused her herb inspection to chat with a random bird that had flown in.
Since her arrival, the Magic Research Division had witnessed several odd behaviors:
Rosedale talked to animals like it was normal.
She napped in trees instead of on sofas.
She tilted her head at things everyone else understood.
She patted people like they were puppiesâincluding Liamson, a man over 40.
âStill⊠Iâm really glad she came,â said Phillippe, smiling despite dirt on her face.
âWe used to be called the most useless divisionâjust wasting imperial funds.â
âItâs true,â Liamson agreed quietly.
âBut being the ‘useless division’ was also the only reason there were so many commoners here⊠or a woman like me.â
âHey now, PhillippeâŠâ
âItâs okay. Iâve heard worse. Some people still say Iâm overstepping by trying to do âbig workâ in the imperial palace.â
Phillippe brushed off Liamsonâs concerned look and smiled.
âThatâs why I love that the only magician in the world is a woman. Iâm just happy she showed up.â
To Phillippe, Rosedale was like a small stone tossed into a rotting riverâstirring the water, making it flow again.
And it wasnât just Phillippe who felt that way.
Rosedaleâs magic rekindled the passion in the team. Their eyes lit up like when theyâd first fallen in love with magic.
âEven proud Lord Todd follows her around like a puppy,â Phillippe laughed.
He still talked rudely, but every time Rosedale used magic, he scooted close, trying to act casual. Rosedale, however, treated him just like anyone else.
âShe never looks down on usâeven though we canât use magic. She works hard right beside us. I really like her.â
Liamson smiled gently too. As the team leader, heâd always felt guiltyâlike he hadnât done enough. But Rosedaleâs presence changed that.
âYouâre right,â he nodded. âSheâs a miracle.â
They watched as Rosedale whispered something to a bird sitting on her shoulder.
âShe is a bit odd though.â
Unaware she was being watched, Rosedale suddenly flinched.
âWHAT?!â
A few minutes earlierâŠ
Rosedale was happily admiring new herb sprouts in her garden whenâ
âPeep!â
She turned to see a small pink wren on the ground.
âOh? Lord Eros?â
It was the same kind of bird Eros had used as a messenger before.
âPeep!â
âYouâre not Eros himself?â
âPeep!â
âOh⊠he just sent a message through you this time.â
Rosedale checked to make sure no one was nearbyâher identity as a divine messenger had to stay secret.
She lifted the bird onto her shoulder and whispered:
âSo, whatâs the message? A mission?â
âPeep peep peep!â
âA mission? What kind?â
Her red eyes sparkled with curiosity.
The bird pointed its head and gaze at a specific areaâswitching its focus between Phillippe and Liamson talking nearby and Todd, who was awkwardly kicking dirt nearby.
âThem? Why?â
âPeep peep peep!â
âWait⊠Todd likes Liamson?â
âPeep?!â
The bird slapped its forehead with its fluffy wing and sighed.
âPeep peep peep peeeeeep.â
âAhâwait. Todd⊠likes Phillippe?! What?! Really?!â
âPEEP!â
The bird puffed out its chest and flapped its wings like: âYES!â
âNo wayâŠâ
Rosedale stared at Todd and Phillippe with a stunned expression.
In all the books she read, love meant wanting to give, share, and speak kindly. But Todd was the opposite:
He pulled Phillippeâs hair.
He called her names like âcommoner.â
He bragged about his future wealth and mocked her clothes.
Phillippe usually ignored him. But when she snapped back, Todd blushed and ran off.
âThatâs love?!â
Rosedale shook her head, baffled.
âAre you sure you didnât misunderstand?â
âPeep?! Peep peep!â
The bird flapped angrily. But Rosedale still looked doubtful.
âSo the mission is⊠to shoot Phillippe with a golden arrow?â
âPeep!â
HmmâŠ
Phillippe was kind. She even gave Rosedale cookies. Was it really okay to match her with Todd?
And how could she trust this when Lukas himself had shown no reaction to the arrow?
She frowned, thinking hard.
âWhy does Eros want them matched up?â
The bird chirped Erosâs explanation:
Todd is immature, but will grow through Phillippe.
Phillippe will find emotional rest through Todd.
Together, theyâll become better peopleâand spread their happiness to others.
â…Really?â
The bird puffed its cheeks as if saying âYES!â again.
Rosedale sighed.
âFine. Tell Eros Iâll watch for nowâand maybe do it soon.â
âPeep!â
The bird fluttered excitedly and circled her head.
âOkay okay⊠Wait! One more thing!â
She stopped the bird before it flew away.
âHave you ever heard of someone getting hit by a golden arrow⊠but not falling in love with the first person they saw?â
âPeep?â
She wiped the sweat forming on her forehead.
âYou know, like⊠what happened with LukasâŠâ
The bird tilted its head in confusion.
âSo youâve never heard of that? Could you⊠ask Eros? Just donât say I asked.â
âPeep?â
Now the bird tilted its head even further, acting like it didnât understand.
âDonât pretend you donât get it.â
âPeep peep?â
âYouâre dumb. And ugly.â
âPEEEEEP!!â
The bird angrily slapped her cheek with its wing.
It didnât hurt at allâbut Rosedaleâs eyes lit up like fire.
âDid you just HIT me?â
â…Peep. PeepâŠâ
The bird, now deflated, dropped to the ground and bowed.
Rosedale glared at it, breathing through her bangs to calm down.
âYou can understand me. Youâre just being lazy, right?â
âPeep?â
It tilted its head again, sweating nervously.
Whether it was laziness or something else, Rosedale knew it probably wouldnât help her.
She sighed and waved it away.
âFine. Thanks. Just go.â
âPeep!â
The bird took off like it was escaping.
Rosedale watched it fly into the distance until it was just a dot, her face heavy with unease.
âSigh⊠What do I do now?â
