~Chapter 12~
âTime?â
âYes. Iâll train Lady Rosedale personally, so no one will ever doubt her identity.â
Cainâs eyes burned with determination as he looked at Rosedale. He was clearly planning to overwhelm her with lessons. But Rosedale just smiled sweetly.
He probably thought she was an uneducated commonerâbut he was completely wrong. She had spent 20 years under the strict education of Elphis and was top of her class. Studying was second nature to her.
Not knowing any of that, Cain was full of fiery enthusiasm.
âAlright. Iâll learn from Cain.â
âAre you sure?â
âI need to study anyway if I want to adapt here.â
Even when Lukas said it wasnât necessary, Rosedale reassured him with a smile.
âJust give me three days. Iâll become your perfect magician.â
âYou already are perfect, Rosie.â
âYou’re flattering me just because I turned out to be a magician.â
âOf course not. Iâm just treating my friend well.â
Rosedale glared at Lukas playfully but then let out a soft laugh.
While the two joked, people who had run away earlier began to return, holding candles and approaching cautiously.
Soon, guards from the cityâs patrol arrived. Lukasâs face turned serious again.
âYour Majesty! Are you alright?â
They had all mobilized due to reports of a monster. Lukas nodded and gave a small sigh.
âItâs time to return.â
âYes, Your Majesty.â
âGuards, make sure the citizens return home safely and wrap up the scene.â
âYes, sir!â
âBurnett, Iâll send the Royal Knights. Help recover the monsterâs body and return with them.â
âAs you command, Your Majesty.â
âCain, go back to the palace and tell the steward to prepare Rosedaleâs room. Assign maids too. Give her the Sapphire Room.â
ââŠYes.â
The Sapphire Room was reserved for only the most important guests. It was located in the southern palaceâclose to where the Emperor livedâwhich made Cain uneasy.
Still, for the only magician in 100 years, it was appropriate.
âShall we go?â
Lukasâs voice rang like music again, just as it had when they left the restaurant together.
Rosedale answered with a lighthearted step, like a musical note dancing on his tune.
âYes.â
Among all humans, he had become her one special person. The one who wore a mask and hid sorrow behind it, yet became fully human only when looking at her.
âMy first friend, Lukas. Just waitâIâll make you truly happy.â
That night, Rosedale’s heart was completely filled with Lukas.
* * *
âWowâŠâ
Rosedale was stunned as she stepped into her new room.
âWhat is all this?â
The room had white marble floors, a sky-high ceiling like a temple, its own bath, a study, elegant tables, and even a balcony with a garden view. The luxurious scent of fine candles filled the air.
âSo this is human culture!â
She picked up a porcelain figurine and gasped. She was overwhelmed by how different this was from the books sheâd read.
âDo you like it?â
Lukas smiled as he watched her.
They were alone now, the door closed behind them.
âLukas, whatâs this for?â
âItâs just decoration.â
âYou mean they made something this pretty just to look at? Humans really areâŠâ
She was amazed by humansâ obsession with beautyâeven trash was made to look good.
âThere are no ceramics where youâre from, Rosie?â
Lukas patted the seat beside him. She sat down, hugging the ceramic piece.
âSo itâs called âceramicâ? Well, no, not really.â
Lukas watched her closely.
âSo she really must be from a poor family that couldnât even afford things like thisâŠâ
But what about the elegant manners she had shown during dinner? That was something only noble ladies were trained in.
Rosedale noticed the questions in his eyes. She pouted and sighed.
âStill donât trust me? Even after the magical oath?â
âI guess not.â
When Lukas admitted it, Rosedale glared at him.
âArenât you being a bit too honest?â
âYouâre leaving anyway, right? Might as well be open.â
His casual shrug made her sigh again, though she couldnât deny he had a point.
Then he added:
âItâs not that I donât trust you. Iâm just curious.â
âCurious?â
âI wonder where you come from that you have to hide it so badly.â
âFair enough.â
Rosedale nodded.
âBut cut me some slack. You hid being an Emperor too, right? Iâm doing the sameâfor similar reasons.â
ââŠAlright.â
Lukas relaxed, unfolding his arms. A soft sigh escaped his lips as he smiled.
He wasnât someone who laughed often. But around her, he couldnât help it.
âWhy are you smiling?â
âJust⊠seeing you hugging that ceramic like itâs a teddy bear.â
âItâs cute, isnât it?â
She rubbed her cheek against it like a child.
She looked like a little bear hugging a honey jar, and Lukas couldnât hold back his laughter.
âWho could ever call her dangerous?â
Lukas had met all kinds of people during the warâtraitors, spies, even trusted soldiers who betrayed him.
He had survived by never fully trusting anyone. But with her, something felt different. She made him want to trust.
âItâs true. I feel comfortable around you.â
He looked at her kindly.
âLetâs spend more time together. Iâm curious if we can stay friends even here.â
âGreat! Iâll prove how deep our bond is.â
She gave a thumbs-up and winked.
âYouâre copying that scammer we saw earlier, arenât you?â
âOf course. That guy winked tooâto build trust.â
âHahaha!â
He burst out laughing.
Rosedale blinked, not expecting that strong reaction. But she smiled anywayâbecause he was happy.
Her smile was like sunlight melting winter snow.
âI want to see you often too. Iâve got some things I want to ask⊠once weâre closer.â
âYouâre full of secrets yourself, but still want to question me?â
âYup. Is that not okay?â
âYouâre so shameless.â
âThatâs my charm.â
She tucked her hair behind her ear and blinked cutely. Lukas couldnât stop laughing.
She was copying a couple they had seen on the streetâa woman tucking her hair as her husband looked at her lovingly.
âSheâs asking me to open my heart to her tooâŠâ
Lukas laughed for a long time before calming down.
âYou really do remind me of everything we saw today. Being with you brings it all back.â
âYou miss it already, donât you?â
âYeah, I do.â
They both felt itâthe day hadnât even ended, but they were already nostalgic for it.
They didnât say it aloud. They just smiled, like old friends reminiscing.
Rosedale looked at Lukas, who finally seemed relaxed.
âAt first, I didnât like you.â
She had thought he was disrespectful to gods and cynical about love.
Until she saw the sadness hidden behind his calm mask.
It seemed that pain had trapped himâmade him unable to believe in love or gods.
âMaybe thatâs why the golden arrow had no effectâŠâ
Rosedale decided thenâshe would stay with him until she figured out what that pain was.
Just like this.
âLukas, give me your hand.â
She put down the ceramic and held out her hands.
Lukas looked at her small, pale hands, then slowly placed his own in hers.
Their hands metâwarm, gentle, comforting.
âIt feels like we held hands yesterday too.â
âWow, I thought the same thing!â
They looked at each other and smiled.
It was a strange feeling. He had only ever touched hands that held swordsâor were cold in death.
But her hands were warm, soft, alive.
He held her tighter.
âFeels nice, right?â
âYeahâŠâ he nodded softly.
She remembered what she read in books:
âHumans comfort each other by touchingâstroking heads, hugging, patting backs, warming away tears.â
Now she understood.
She played with his rough, calloused hands and whispered:
âLetâs see each other often. Letâs hold hands like this. Letâs fill our short time together with warmth.â
Lukas didnât answer with words.
But he held her hand tighterâwith a strength that was both strong and gentle.
