~Chapter 9~
Once Rosedale started eating, her sadness disappeared completely.
This wasnât just foodâit was a revolution. A blessing.
âAhaha!â
Lukas laughed loudly as he watched her.
She was crying but still eating nonstop with her fork. He found it hilarious and fascinating.
Rosedale didnât care if he laughed. Her fork didnât stop.
âOne more plate of this!â
She had three plates of steak, two plates of salad, and endless pasta and bread.
Thanks to the manners taught in the fairy world, even though she ate a lot, she still looked graceful. Only her speed gave her away.
She no longer looked like a poor commonerâmore like a noble.
âThe reason Iâm eating this much is because Iâm in a human body now, okay?â
Her body needed human food now, so she had an excuse.
She had read books written by high-level fairies who had once visited the human world. But none of them talked about the foodâor how delicious it was.
âThey mustâve felt guilty,â
she thought.
âThey didnât write about it because they didnât want to tempt the rest of us.â
But the taste⊠it was impossible to resist. Even while eating the main course, she kept trying desserts.
âLukas, whatâs this called?â
âThat? CrĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e.â
âCream bebe?â
âNo. CrĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e.â
âRight, cream bebe! Itâs amazing! The topâs crunchy, and the bottom is soft!â
Rosedale cupped her cheeks with her hands, trembling with joy.
Lukas chuckled.
Who cares what itâs calledâas long as she liked it?
He felt pleased watching her enjoy the meal he bought.
But⊠wasnât she eating a lot?
âRosedale.â
âRosie.â
âWhat?â
âMy nickname. Call me Rosie.â
She was so happy she gave him her fairy nicknameâone she made up herself, but no one ever used.
Now she gave it freely to the man who gave her good food.
There was no âbeware of beef-buying menâ chapter in the fairy booksâso she let her guard down.
ââŠAlright, Rosie.â
The sudden closeness surprised Lukas, but he stayed calm.
âAre you sure youâll be okay eating this much?â
âWhy? You think Iâll get sick?â
âYeah. Your stomach might hurt.â
âOh, do humans get sick when they eat too much?â
Rosie kept eating.
Even though she was in human form, she was still a fairy filled with powerful mana. Human illnesses didnât really apply.
âIâll be fine.â
She left out “probably.”
She hadnât been in human form long, so she couldnât say for sure.
âWait⊠am I eating too much?â
She paused, a little worried.
âAre you running out of money?â
âOf course not.â
Lukas frowned, arms crossed.
Even though he hadnât told her he was the emperor, he was still royalty. He had pride.
Being mistaken for someone poor? That stung.
âEat more. I could buy the whole restaurant if I wanted.â
âReally?! Then can we go outside and try more food?â
âOf course.â
âOkay! Iâll finish this, and then letâs go!â
Her eyes sparkled.
When she first came to the city, she had smelled so many new thingsâshe now realized those smells were food.
âLong live the human world!â
âLetâs go,â
Lukas said, standing up.
âWeâre going to eat again?â
âI donât know. Weâll just walk around and eat whatever looks good.â
Lukas left money on the table, and Rosie followed him out.
Outside, the city was still lively and noisyâfull of energy.
She was surrounded by humans, looking like one of them.
But deep down, she was still a fairy in a very different world.
It all felt strange and unrealâbut also exciting.
âLukas, can we check that out?â
âYou can do anything you want.â
With Lukas following her without question, Rosedale pulled him everywhere.
They looked at big round hats, watched street performers, and wandered into crowds.
Sometimes she got distracted and vanishedâonly for Lukas to find her staring excitedly at street scams.
She bought sparkling bracelets and made Lukas wear one tooâeven though he didnât want to.
She argued with a parrot that mimicked people.
âStupid! Stupid!â
âHey! Who do you think youâre callingââ
âRosie. Letâs just go,â
Lukas said, embarrassed.
Rosie huffed angrily.
âStupid? Iâm the daughter of Elpis, ruler of nature! How dare a parrot insult me!â
But Lukas just laughed at her.
To calm her down, he bought her a candied apple.
That small act melted her anger even moreâand she opened her heart even further to him.
âWant to go there next?â
âSounds great!â
No one recognized Lukas. No humans found Rosie suspicious.
They were like birds flying for the first time. Like travelers exploring a new world.
They laughed, smiled, and shared a freedom neither had felt in a long time.
So by the time they sat at the fountain squareâjust as the sky turned orangeâthey felt closer.
âLukas⊠why did you come with me today?â
He looked at her, surprised by the question.
âYou didnât have to listen to me. Like Cain said, you couldâve just paid me. So why?â
âHmmâŠâ
He looked out at the streets.
A child smiled, holding their motherâs hand. Merchants shouted joyfully. People lived peacefully as the day ended.
âMaybe⊠I just wanted to be part of this for once.â
Rosie blinked in surprise. That was her reason too.
When their eyes met again, Lukasâs smileâsoft and lonelyâmade her heart ache.
âItâs been a long time since someone looked me in the eyes like you do.â
âPeople donât look at you?â
âThey canât.â
ââŠâ
Was it like how she couldnât look directly at Elpis?
Had Elpis ever felt like this too?
She thought of her lonely time in the fairy world.
She leaned closer to Lukasâs words.
âJust for one day⊠I wanted to feel normal. Peaceful. I thought maybe you could help me do that.â
âBecause I look at you directly?â
âBecause you speak to me directly.â
When he first met her, she had spoken to him without fearâand he had removed his mask.
Maybe he wanted her not to recognize who he really was.
Maybe he just wanted someone to treat him like a person.
âThen⊠did today feel normal and peaceful?â
âYeah. More than anything.â
He smiled. She smiled too.
Rosedale was happy. She had helped her first human.
It felt goodâlike she was standing tall even next to someone like Elpis.
Most of all, Lukas didnât seem sad anymore. That made her chest feel warm.
âLukas⊠do you think we became friends today?â
âWhat does friendship mean to you, Rosie?â
He avoided answering, but she didnât mind.
âItâs when you eat together, spend time, and laugh.â
âWhen you help someone even if you donât owe them. When you think of them when youâre bored. When theyâre happy, you feel proud too.â
âThatâs what a friend is. Isnât it?â
That idea of friendship had stuck in her heart like a star.
Unlike the love of parents sheâd never haveâfriendship was something she believed she could have.
He would never know how much today had meant to her.
âThen yeah, Rosie. Weâre friends.â
Lukas smiled gently.
He tucked some of her messy hair behind her earâso warmly.
âYouâre the most honest and brave person Iâve met. I like that.â
âSoâŠ?â
âSo Iâm scared of how youâll change once you know the real me. That you wonât call me your friend anymore.â
As if todayâs peace was just an illusionâŠ
His quiet words touched Rosie deeply.
âWe must really be friends, Lukas.â
âIf your sadness hurts me this much, then we must be.â
She gently placed her hand on his cheek.
Looking into his eyesâred like sunlightâshe said:
âNo matter who you are, Iâll still be your friend.â
ââŠâ
âIâll look at you, speak to you directly. Always. As your pure, honest friend.â
Lukas stared at her, searching her eyes for truth.
Then he leaned into her hand.
The sunset faded behind them, and the darkness of nightâlike Lukasâs hairâbegan to fall.
In that quiet moment, they shared themselvesâfully, honestly.
They shared their soft, honest, and vulnerable hearts.
