~Chapter 7~
âAh!â
Rosedale wiped her nervous, sweaty hands on her dress and held one out.
âLet me introduce myself again. Iâm Rosedale Bell. And you are?â
She offered her hand for a handshakeâsomething she read humans do. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity at this new culture.
âDo you even know who this isââ
âLukas,â
Lukas cut off Cain and shook her hand.
âI canât tell you my last name, but just call me Lukas.â
âYour Majââ
Cain shut his mouth in frustration, unable to reveal Lukasâs true identity.
Lukas let go of her hand and removed his mask.
His handsome face was now visible, and Rosedaleâs smile grew brighter.
âThanks for helping earlier. You saved me.â
âOh, that?â
Rosedale shrugged while holding the panther statue in one arm.
âIt was nothing.â
Even while carrying a statue her size, she looked calm. Lukas gave her a sharp lookâstudying her.
But her innocent smile didnât fade.
âHand it over,â
Cain reached out. Rosedale started to give the statue⊠then pulled it back into her arms.
âEven if itâs no big deal, you canât just take it, right?â
âWhatâŠ?â
âHumans say, âGive and take,â donât they?â
She turned her head back to Lukas.
âI showed kindness, and humans return kindness in equal value. But youââ
She pointed at Cain.
âYou look down on me instead of thanking me. And youââ
She pointed at Burnet, who blinked in surprise.
âYou just stood there. And finally, Lukasââ
Lukas couldnât escape her finger either.
âYou acted like my help was normal and didnât thank me. Thatâs bad manners.â
Lukas stared at her in silence.
It was the first time in his life someone had pointed a finger at him.
A faint smile formed on his lipsâhe was amused.
Rosedale puffed out her chest like she had taught some naughty kids a lesson.
Cain, blushing with anger, finally exploded:
âHow dare youâdo you even know who this man is?!â
âCain.â
Lukas calmly stopped him, still watching Rosedale.
âSheâs right. We didnât show proper thanks after receiving help.â
Cain, reluctantly, asked:
â…How much do you want?â
He clearly didnât like this. Not because of the money, but because this girl dared to ask the emperor for paymentâwithout even knowing who he was.
Even though she didnât know Lukasâs identity, their clothes, weapons, and attitude showed they were no ordinary men. So Cain found her boldness annoying.
Rosedale knew how Cain feltâbut ignored it on purpose.
He reminded her of Elpis, the uptight higher-ranked fairy. Maybe thatâs why she wanted to push harder.
âI donât want money,â
she said with a soft smile, staring straight at Lukas.
âInstead, give me your time.â
âMy time?â
âYeah. I just got here yesterday. I want to explore the cityâand I want you to help.â
Books said spending time together builds friendship. Plus, sheâd get to tour the human world. Win-win.
Rosedale only knew humans through books. Real experience was better.
Lukas crossed his arms and looked at her.
Her red eyes met his emerald onesâcalm, honest, and fearless.
He looked at her silently for a moment.
âLukas,â
Cain came close and whispered in his ear, not knowing fairies had great hearing.
âYou shouldnât waste time on someone we donât even know. Just give her money.â
Cainâs eyes judged Rosedale from head to toe.
She wore an old-style white cloth dress and ragged shoesâlike a beggar or a forgotten priestess.
âShe may not be right in the head,â
Cain muttered.
Rosedale frowned.
âHey. I know you were trying to whisper, but I heard everything.â
She tried to pretend not to, but that didnât work.
âLike I saidâI just got here yesterday. If I broke a custom, Iâm sorry.â
She sighed and glared at Cain.
âBut calling me crazy? Thatâs rude. Or is that how people in Iberia treat someone just because theyâre different?â
Cain went quiet, slightly embarrassed.
Seeing his expression, Rosedaleâs anger faded.
He wasnât a bad personâjust someone who followed rules and class too strictly.
âIâll apologize on his behalf. Sorry,â
Lukas said, bowing his head slightly.
âY-Your Majââ
Cain followed and bowed too.
âIâm sorry. I was rude.â
âSo, youâll give me your time?â
Rosedale smiled brightly.
It was a pure smileâbut her persistence was clear.
â…Ha.â
Lukas let out a light chuckle.
It wasnât sarcastic or cold. Just a small, real laughâlike he was enjoying this strange situation.
âAlright, sure.â
âReally?!â
Her face lit up like sunshine. Lukas nodded with a smile.
âYour MaâLukas!â
âBurnet, go call the city guards.â
Ignoring Cain, Lukas gave orders.
âCollect everything here, even the dust. Lock up the ones still breathing.â
âYes, sir.â
âCain, go with him.â
âWhat? Me?â
âIf Burnet goes alone, they might not believe him. You go too.â
Cain looked nervously between Lukas and Rosedale.
She smiled slyly at him.
âBut shouldnât I stay by your side, Lukas?â
Cain couldnât argueâhe had messed up earlierâbut her smug face annoyed him deeply.
Rosedale felt like sheâd won. Her victory felt sweet.
âItâs dangerous to travel with someone you donât knowââ
âYou think Iâd lose in a fight?â
Lukas cut Cain off with a crooked smile.
âThatâs not what I meantââ
âIf thatâs not it, then itâs fine for just me and Rosedale to go, right?â
âRight,â
Rosedale nodded, smiling.
Their perfect teamwork left Cain speechless.
Burnet stood awkwardly beside him.
Lukas put his mask back onâthen even stole Cainâs robe to wear over it.
âLetâs meet at the fountain plaza at sunset.â
He fixed his robe and added playfully.
Rosedale quickly handed the panther statue to Burnet.
âAlright, first, letâs get some clothes for our rescuer.â
âYour MaâLukas!!â
Cain called out like a heartbroken lover, but Lukas and Rosedale had already left the shop.
âThereâs not much to see here. Weâll head to the busy part of town, okay?â
âOkay!â
Lukas gently lifted Rosedale and placed her on a horse.
Then he climbed up behind her and grabbed the reins.
She ended up leaning against his chest.
His shirt smelled like citrus.
Rosedale didnât move away.
The scent was nice, and his arms felt warmâso she stayed there.
Lukas smiled faintly, surprised by how comfortable she seemed.
âHah!â
With a shout, the horse galloped off.
Dust rose behind them, hiding them from everyone elseâas if guarding their private time.
LaterâŠ
âOh my, it suits you so well!â
Rosedale stood in front of a mirror, getting compliments from the boutique owner.
She now wore pantsânot a dress.
âYouâre the first woman Iâve seen who looks this good in pants.â
âDo men and women wear different clothes here? I mean⊠do they?â
Rosedale corrected herself, remembering to speak politely.
She only used polite speech with Elpis and Eros before.
It felt weird using it for humans she once thought of as cute pets.
Still, she was trying hard to fit in.
âYou said itâs your first time in the Empire, right?â
The boutique lady adjusted her pants.
âIn Iberia, pants are for working people. Noble women donât wear themâtheyâre not allowed to work.â
Poor women can work, but they canât afford to shop here.
So this was the first time the boutique owner ever fitted pants for a woman.
She had picked a small pair of menâs pants and adjusted them.
Now she was smiling brightly.
âIs that so?â
Rosedale found the custom strange.
Poor women could work, but noble ones couldnât? Odd rule.
Soon, the tailoring was done.
âAll finished!â
The curtain opened, and Lukas stood from the couch to approach.
When he saw her, his eyes brightened.
âNot wearing a dress?â
âNo. Is it weird?â
âNo. It looks great. Really.â
He smiled gently.
He stepped closer and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
Rosedale tilted her head.
âHeâs really⊠being too nice all of a sudden?â
