~Chapter 6~
A few minutes earlierâ
Lukas and his group walked into the shop. Right away, they felt something was strange.
âHow can I help you?â
One worker asked, looking them up and down.
The shop didnât feel welcoming. The workers looked more like thugs than salespeople.
There werenât any items for sale either. The only thing on display was a black panther statue in the window.
âI want to buy that statue,â
Lukas said, pointing to it.
The workers glanced at each other.
âPlease wait a moment,â
one of them said, going through a door in the back.
Cain leaned toward Lukas and whispered:
âYour Majesty⊠this feels dangerous. Maybe we should come back with more knights.â
Lukas didnât say anything. He folded his arms. Now that he knew the place was suspicious, he couldnât just leave. These men were likely just underlings. If he wanted to find the real boss, he had to stay.
A moment later, the worker came back holding something in his hand. It looked like a red stone or jewel.
âWhatâs that?â
Cain asked.
No reply. The man stayed silent.
âLooks like the stone in the pantherâs eye, doesnât it?â
Lukas asked.
Still, the worker didnât answer.
âSorry, but we have nothing to sell,â
he said coldly and put the stone in his pocket.
He waved at them to leave.
Lukas laughed.
âA store that kicks out customers. Amazing.â
âWho owns this place? I want to speak to them.â
At that, the workers’ eyes changed. They looked cold.
âDo you have a referral?â
one asked.
âYou need a referral to buy something here?â
Lukas replied calmly.
The tension grew.
âIf you donât have one, leave.â
Suddenly, the back door opened and several rough men walked out. They carried weapons and had scars. They looked ready to fight.
Burnet touched his sword. Cain looked nervous.
Lukas quietly unfolded his arms. He saw no hidden rooms or secret goods. This really was just a front.
But still, he couldnât walk away now.
He smiled and said:
âCall your boss. Do that, and Iâll let you live.â
âYou think you’re in charge?!â
one man laughed and pushed Lukasâs shoulder.
âYou shouldâGAH!â
Burnet twisted the manâs wrist and growled:
âDonât touch him.â
The man screamed and fell. The others pulled out their weapons.
Burnet stood in front of Lukas with his sword. Cain quietly stepped back.
Lukas didnât draw his weapon. He just stood there.
âGet them!â
someone yelled.
Two men rushed inâBurnet cut them down.
Lukas calmly fought with his bare hands. He looked bored, like none of this was hard.
âCain, move,â
Lukas said and tossed a man across the room. The man hit a pillar with a loud thud.
Screams and cracking bones filled the room.
Soon, many thugs were on the floor.
Just as things were calming down, one man tried to destroy the panther statue.
âNo!â
Cain shoutedâbut it was too late.
The man threw itâ
âGot it!â
A woman appeared and caught the statue gently.
âDonât worry. It didnât break,â
she said in a pretty voice.
She had long black hair in a ponytail and wore a white dress. Her red eyes sparkled.
The bloody room went silent. Everyone stared at her.
âWho are you?!â
the man who threw the statue shouted.
âOh, you want my name?â
the woman blinked and smiled.
âIâm Rosedale. Rosedale Bell.â
Rosedale felt proud of her introduction.
âSomeone already wants to know my name!â
She hoped it was Lukas.
And she had even saved the statue. Books said being kind helps you make friends.
She stood tall.
But the man who lost the statue looked annoyed.
âWho asked for your name?!â
Rosedale tilted her head.
âShould I say my age too? I just turned twentââ
âYouâre crazy!â
He raised his hand to hit her.
ButâSLAP!
She slapped him first. Hard.
âOops. I didnât mean to hit that hard,â
she said.
The man collapsed, unconscious. His cheek was red and swollen.
Rosedale looked down at him.
âI even caught your statue⊠and this is how you treat me?â
She sighed.
Then her eyes met Lukasâs.
Time stopped. His green eyes reminded her of a quiet lake in summer.
Her heart raced.
âUmâŠâ
âAre you on their side?â
Lukas asked.
Before she could reply, more men came forward.
âGive us the statue.â
Even the man with the broken wrist stood again.
Lukas looked at them, then turned back to Rosedale.
âThat statue youâre holding. Can you keep it safe for me?â
His voice was deep and calm. Rosedale thought it sounded like fairy music.
He didnât smileâbut Rosedale didnât mind his serious face.
âSure,â
she said.
Lukas took off his robe and gently wrapped it around her.
âKeep it on,â
he told her.
âOkay,â
she nodded.
The robe smelled like citrusâjust like Lukas.
Then he turned back to the thugs.
âIâll block them!â
Burnet said.
He was injured and tired.
âStand back,â
Lukas said, drawing his sword.
âIâm done playing.â
Burnet and Cain moved away.
âArrogant bastard!â
the men growled.
âEveryone attack!â
âGood. Easier to kill you all at once,â
Lukas said with a sharp smile.
He bent low and slashed.
SWOOSH!
Three heads flew. Then more blood splashed as he cut again.
Rosedale watched in shock.
âWow⊠Cain wasnât lying. He really is the strongest.â
She had thought Elpis was the strongest, but Lukasâs sword skills were incredible.
Soon, the fight was over.
Only one man was still awake, holding his bleeding arm.
Lukas put his sword to the manâs neck.
âWhoâs your boss?â
âI-I donât know!â
The man shook in fear.
âIf you donât know, you die.â
Blood started to drip from his neck.
âTalk.â
âI really donât! Iâm just a worâGACK!â
Blood poured from his mouth.
Lukas stepped back. The man collapsed and died.
Cain checked for a pulse.
âHeâs dead.â
âDid he kill himself?â
Lukas stayed silent.
The man had tried to speak but died first. It didnât feel like a normal death.
Something bigger might be going on.
But for now, something else was more important.
Lukas turned back to Rosedale.
Their eyes met again.
She looked into his green eyes.
They reminded her of a lake fairies loved.
âSuch beautiful eyesâŠâ
she thought.
âThis is my human. The first one Iâve blessed. More beautiful than any fairy.â
Hearing soft bell sounds in her heart, Rosedale smiled slightly.
