~Chapter 95~
āTomorrow, there will be a small gathering at the Club. Itās a preliminary meeting before the main event in a few days. Thereās a high chance Dr. Karno will attend. Your Highness will accompany the Duke as his partner. The time isā¦ā
The meeting continued, carefully organizing tomorrowās schedule and the details about Dr. Karnoās associates.
By the time everything ended, it was already evening. Everyone suggested eating dinner together, but I refused, saying I wasnāt hungry since I had eaten lunch late.
āNocturne, go ahead and eat with them.ā
He tried to insist several more times, but in the end, I pushed him toward the knights, telling him to join them.
On the way back to my room, I ran into Tita.
āYour Highness, was the meeting good?ā she greeted brightly.
I smiled at her.
āTita, did you enjoy lunch?ā
āYes. Northern food is quite good. The chef here is very skilled.ā
āIām glad.ā
After a pause, I asked:
āBut why didnāt you wake me this morning?ā
āAh⦠Iām sorry. You were sleeping so deeply. And the Duke said todayās schedule didnāt require your presence.ā
āI see⦠I must not have heard that.ā
I looked at Tita quietly.
āIs that really all?ā
āā¦Yes!ā
āAlright.ā
āā¦Why do you ask, Your Highness?ā
āItās nothing. I just feel like Iām not a very reliable master.ā
āā¦I-Iām sorry.ā
āItās fine. Things like that happen. Yesterday was such a sudden situation, after all.ā
āYes⦠right.ā
āThere wonāt be another incident like that anyway.ā
I murmured softly. Only three days left until the Cambiata Club was destroyed. The chance of another dangerous swarm-type beast appearing before then was very low.
So there would be no repeat of last night with Nocturne. And I wouldnāt oversleep like that again.
āTomorrow morning, make sure to wake me.ā
Tita nodded earnestly.
Although I still felt suspicious, I believed they wouldnāt leave me behind tomorrow. After all, Dr. Karno was expected to appear at the meeting, and my sensitivity would be essential.
I patted Titaās head lightly, then returned to my bedroom and reviewed the documents from the meeting once more.
About an hour passed.
Beeeeepā! Beeeeepā!
Just like yesterday, the alarm blared at almost the same time.
I rushed outside to see Nocturne already prepared for battle. Unlike last nightās lighter outing, he was now fully armedācombat gear, artifacts to hide his identity, and a robe.
āā¦Two nights in a row? What class is it today?ā I asked.
āA-class. Iāll finish quickly, so stay inside.ā
He cupped the back of my head and kissed my forehead gently before leaving.
After seeing him off, I followed the butler, who was heading to finish his duties. The always-composed man smiled warmly at me.
āWhat is it, Your Highness?ā
āI was wondering⦠are you from the North?ā
āNo, but Iāve worked here a long time, so I know much about it. Please ask freely.ā
I asked quietly:
āYesterday, did word of Nocturne fighting the monster spread anywhere?ā
āPlease donāt worry. Our informants are monitoring outside, and no such news has leaked.ā
āGood. Did the beast actually enter the city last night?ā
āFor a short moment, yes. But it was swiftly taken care of.ā
āAny destruction or casualties?ā
The butler smiled reassuringly.
āNone at all. Youāve grown attached to the people here, havenāt you?ā
āā¦Iām relieved.ā
I thought carefully.
That meant Nocturne hadnāt returned late last night because of lingering beasts hidden around the city.
āRats⦠they were annoyingā¦ā
Then who were those āratsā that bothered him?
āDo you need anything else, Your Highness?ā the butler asked kindly.
āYes. Could I borrow something?ā
āOf course. What do you need?ā
I pointed to his waist.
āThat alarm artifact.ā
Northern butlers usually carried one for time managementāa tool that rang at the set hour.
Though surprised, the butler lent it to me after I insisted.
That night, Nocturne returned.
Just like yesterday, I let him in. His eyes had turned blue again as he embraced me.
The passion continuing into a second night was overwhelming. With my body still aching from yesterday, the flood of his affection pushed me quickly to my limit.
āDoing this every night⦠I might really dieā¦ā I gasped between trembling breaths.
His body froze. He started to pull away, but I quickly wrapped my arms around his neck.
āI canāt⦠even say the words properly.ā
I smiled faintly at him. I didnāt know why all this was happening, but I didnāt want to let go of this moment.
āKeep going. This might be the last timeā¦ā
āā¦It wonāt be the last,ā he whispered after a long silence.
And he was right.
That night was long and deep.
Beep beepā beep beepā
The faint alarm dragged me awake.
My eyelids felt heavy as stone, my body drained like I had been soaked in water. Instinctively, I reached for the space beside meābut it was already empty.
The blurry clock on the wall read 8 a.m.
āDonāt tell me⦠againā¦ā
Panic struck me. I tried to get up, but my weakened legs gave way, and I collapsed to the floor.
āAhhā¦ā
The pain jolted me fully awake. Sitting on the floor, holding my knee, I heard the bedroom door burst open.
āAre you alright?ā
Nocturne rushed in, wearing only a white shirt and trousers, his jacket and tie not yet on. He must have heard me fall while preparing to leave.
He knelt on one knee and gently examined my bruised knee with surprising care.
āOn the outside it looks fine, but it might bruise later. Does it hurt much?ā
I muttered quietly:
āAt least you havenāt left yet.ā
āā¦.ā
āDonāt leave me behind.ā
Nocturne said nothing. Instead, he supported me back onto the bed. Rubbing the back of his neck, he muttered:
āI was just about to take you with me. Get ready.ā
That was a blatant lie. He had clearly planned to sneak out alone.
āI was just about to get ready too,ā I answered smoothly.
I nodded and left the bedroom. From behind, I could feel Nocturneās gaze following my back.
