~Chapter 58~
Lucien looked at me for a moment and muttered,
ââŠItâs amazing that Nocturne actually found you.â
âHm?â
At his sudden words, I tilted my head. Lucien gave an awkward smile and explained,
âWhen we lost you in Ellicia and Tita came to me, the information she gave wasnât enough to figure out where you went. But the moment Nocturne heard it, he said you must have gone to the lab.â
Lucien frowned slightly as he recalled the memory.
âI couldnât believe it. In a kidnapping situation, why and how would you go there? So while Nocturne went to the lab, I searched places like Willowâs hideouts instead. But you really had gone to the lab. I donât know how he read your actions so perfectlyâŠâ
Hearing his words, I immediately remembered what Nocturne said yesterday:
âYour play style is the same as Ariaâs.â
âHaaâŠâ
I sighed without thinking.
Like Iâd told Nocturne yesterday, he knew nothing about me â only about Aria.
And yet, the fact that he saw through me meant I was acting just like AriaâŠ
The idea that even my choices were being predicted touched a nerve.
ââŠVis?â
âOh, sorry. I just got lost in thought for a second.â
When I smiled, Lucien looked at me and spoke.
âI call you Vis, but honestly, I still canât believe it.â
I blinked. Lucien was really straightforward.
I liked how he faced his emotions head-on. But the next thing he said was unexpected.
âTo truly believe youâre Cambiata and not Aria, would you let me look into your mind?â
I asked cautiously,
âYou know it could be dangerous to read a Cambiataâs mind, right?â
âIâm an A-rank Eshape. During the war, I read Cambiatasâ minds countless times.â
âYouâve forgotten it all by now, though.â
By the end of the war, the mental-types who read Cambiatasâ minds had reached their mental limits. In the end, they had to erase all memories that could cause trauma.
Thatâs why, until the end of the war, the only mental-type who kept all her memories intact was Aria.
Lucien hesitated.
ââŠAnyway, itâs fine.â
âAlright, in that case.â
Though Iâd tried to warn him, I actually welcomed the idea.
âThen I have a request. If you look into my mind and confirm Iâm Cambiata, can you tell the Duke?â
âThe Duke?â
âYes. Heâs as confused as you are.â
Lucien thought for a moment, then nodded.
âAlright, Iâll do it.â
âAnd one more thing. For safety, could you write a contract?â
âWhat kind of contract?â
âA preventive influence contract â a safeguard so that even if I become mentally unstable, I canât harm anyone.â
Lucien looked hesitant at that.
âBut Iâm only going to check surface memories. Do we really need that?â
âWell, itâs my first time doing this, so I donât know what could happen. Better to be safe. And thereâs another reason⊠Nocturne made me an offer.â
âWhat kind of offer?â
âHe asked me to be his pair for a mission to wipe out the remaining Cambiata members.â
âThe Duke proposed pairing with you?â
There was a strange tension in Lucienâs voice.
âYes, but Iâm not sure I can do it without causing trouble⊠so I want to have the contract in place.â
If I was going to work as Nocturneâs pair, even temporarily, such a safeguard was essential.
Lucien seemed to understand and nodded.
âAlright, Iâll write it up.â
Lucien skillfully drafted the contract.
The main clause was a ban on abusing mental influence, along with safety conditions like not harming innocent civilians and not leaking information harmful to the Empire.
After I signed it, Lucien asked,
âReady?â
âYes.â
He placed his hand gently on my forehead and activated his ability.
The unfamiliar sensation made me shrink back a little, but Lucienâs touch was gentle. Like carefully turning pages in a book, he lightly skimmed only the surface of my memories.
After some time, Lucien slowly withdrew his hand and murmured,
ââŠYou really are Cambiata.â
I saw a flicker of agitation in his golden eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.
âIâll tell Nocturne too.â
âThanks.â
Lucien looked at me for a moment, then gave a bittersweet smile.
It was a smile mixed with relief, regret, and the will to let something go.
âThen Iâll go now. When we meet outside⊠I guess Iâll have to call you Ari.â
âAlright.â
I gave a small smile.
âYou can call me whateverâs comfortable for you.â
We had talked about many things, but neither of us mentioned his proposal. It was an unspoken agreement to treat what happened because of mistaking me for Aria as something that never happened.
Lucienâs way of drawing a clean line without losing warmth was more comforting than any words.
After Lucien left, I sat thinking for a moment.
Then I noticed something on the chair â his scarf.
âLucien!â
I stepped into the hallway and called him. Lucien turned back with a questioning look.
âYou left your scarf.â
âOh, I did.â
I walked over and picked it up. When he bent his head, I naturally wrapped it around his neck. Lucien gave a small smile and said,
âThanks, Ari.â
Just then, I sensed a familiar presence from the opposite end of the hall. Turning my head, I saw Nocturne walking toward us.
I could feel his gaze settle on my hand as I wrapped Lucienâs scarf around him.
For some reason, it felt like Iâd been caught doing something wrong, and I quickly pulled my hand away like Iâd touched something hot.
As Nocturne came closer, Lucien said to him,
âBendrix, I was just about to come see you.â
âMe?â
âLetâs talk for a moment.â
It seemed he wanted to tell him what Iâd asked.
Lucien led Nocturne away, waving to me.
âGo rest. Be healthier the next time I see you.â
âThanks, Lucien.â
I thanked him again and went back into my room.
Lucien and Nocturne entered an office the hospital had given Nocturne.
After the secretary served tea and left, Lucienâs voice came as Nocturne was taking off his coat.
âYou proposed pairing with Vis. Cancel it.â
At the word âVis,â Nocturneâs hand paused mid-motion. He looked back at Lucien sitting on the sofa with a hardened gaze.
But Lucienâs face was pale, and the hand holding his teacup was trembling slightly.
âI didnât think it would be this badâŠâ
Nocturne frowned at the muttered words.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âI looked at her memories.â
Lucien rubbed his face with one hand.
âI couldnât tell her apart from Aria, so I wanted to be sure⊠and it was a shock.â
ââŠ.â
âSheâs not just any Cambiata. At the very least, she was a high-ranking executive. That means she personally planned and carried out human experiments. She did terrible things under the name of research. Now her memories are fragmented, so sheâs sufferingâŠâ
He looked straight at Nocturne and spoke firmly.
âShe still has her Cambiata identity. If all her memories come back, she could regain enough knowledge to rebuild the organization.â
ââŠIs that so?â
At Nocturneâs calm reaction, Lucienâs gaze sharpened.
âDonât you get it? Itâs like a Cambiata killed Aria and took her body! If you pair with someone like that and she regains her memories, who knows what sheâll do!â
Lucien raised his voice, but Nocturne, watching him, spoke quietlyâ
I guess I’m really not understanding the full situation with her Cambiata…ness. maybe that will get better with time.
