Chapter 21
Nocturne, after carefully studying Ariaâs face, let out a sigh and stepped back.
âHow can you dance in this condition? Please go inside and rest.â
âIâm fine. I can at least enjoy the ball.â
âYou are aware your complexion is poor, arenât you?â
That couldnât be true. Tita had worked so hard on her makeup.
Aria unconsciously touched her cheek. Nocturne sighed again.
âWillow.â
At his call, the aide waiting behind him stepped forward.
âWillow will accompany Your Highness in my stead.â
âNocturne, youâve already broken our contract for two days. We agreed on daily dates, remember?â
âYouâve seen plenty of me today. We were in meetings all day.â
Aria stared in disbelief.
âLetâs be honest â that was not a date.â
âIâll come see you tomorrow. Thatâs it for today.â
His tone was firm.
Still, at least he wasnât completely ignoring the contract. Aria was quietly relieved, but outwardly she stood her ground.
âThat goes without saying. Youâd better fulfill your obligations properly today too.â
âWillow, make sure Her Highness doesnât overexert herself.â
Nocturne didnât give in.
Maybe he really was busy. Watching his unhesitating retreating back, Aria turned her head at the sound of approaching footsteps.
It was Willow, Nocturneâs aide, who reached out a hand to her.
âShall we, Your Highness?â
Willow had a solid build and warm brown eyes â a young heir to a viscountâs family. His good looks and courteous demeanor were already drawing the attention of many women at the ball.
Aria gave him a polite smile.
âYou donât have to force yourself, Sir Willow.â
âThatâs a bit formal. Please call me Willow, like before.â
ââŠWill, Iâm really sorry about Roaster. And thank you for staying by Nocturneâs side.â
Roaster, Nocturneâs closest aide, had died in battle â and Willow, his younger brother, had taken his place and become the heir of the Rixen family.
âItâs what I should be doing. Shall we dance?â
âI appreciate the gesture, but I really am fine.â
âYou might be misunderstanding â Iâm not doing this just because of the DukeâŠâ
Before Aria could answer, a familiar voice cut in.
âPrincess Ariadna.â
A man with golden hair and a charming smile approached. Prince Lucien.
Aria greeted him warmly.
âLucy.â
âItâs been so long, I thought youâd forgotten my name. Itâs Lucien.â
He gently corrected her with a formal tone. Aria laughed.
âLucyâ was the childhood nickname his family used. But combined with his pretty face and the queenâs love for ornate things, it once led to a rumor that Lucien was the âPrincess of Elysia.â
Young Lucien, convinced the nickname â not his looks â caused the rumor, threw a tantrum and begged his family to call him âSienâ instead.
Aria had heard this story from Lucienâs father and had teasingly continued calling him Lucy ever since.
That same old protest from Lucien brought a wave of nostalgic affection.
Lucien smiled and politely extended his hand.
âWould Your Highness honor me with the first dance?â
âOf course, Princess Lucien.â
âOkay, you win.â
Lucien chuckled and accepted defeat.
Aria took his hand, and after greeting Willow, Lucien led her to the center of the ballroom.
As the soft notes of a string ensemble floated through the air, they began to dance.
Despite her worries about her physical condition, Lucien moved gently to match her pace, and it wasnât too difficult to keep up.
Aria expected him to make conversation, but Lucien remained oddly quiet. She focused on not missing a step and waited.
âAri.â
His voice, slightly husky, called her name.
Surprised, Aria looked up.
His golden eyes â like sunlight â were slightly wet.
âIâm so glad youâre alive. After the war ended, the imperial family kept you hidden away⊠I thought you might neverâŠâ
The music ended just then, and they came to a stop near the edge of the ballroom.
Aria gently patted his back in comfort.
âWhen I saw you in the meeting roomâŠâ
âYou were surprised?â
âI donât even remember how I finished the meeting.â
âYou did great, though.â
When Aria praised him, Lucien smiled, his teary eyes crinkling.
âYour family must be so happy.â
ââŠâ
âLady Minette and your retainers too â they mustâve been really worried.â
âYeah⊠they were.â
Aria answered with effort, hiding her bitterness.
âBut whereâs Cerberus?â
âCerberus?â
That hellhound? Aria tilted her head in confusion, and Lucien clarified.
âDuke Bendrix.â
ââŠWhy are you calling someoneâs boyfriend a monster?â
âHis job at these parties is guarding you and making sure no one dances with you. He shouldâve jumped out to block me by now.â
Seeing him glance around warily, anxious even in Bendrixâs absence, Aria recalled old memories.
Lucien, as Elysiaâs crown prince, had once visited the imperial capital as a child. There, he had met Aria and apparently developed a crush.
The story of the 8-year-old prince having a crush on the 6-year-old princess had amused the royal court, though Aria never noticed.
Later, teenage Ariaâs relationship with Nocturne became public knowledge â except Lucien never heard about it.
So when Aria visited Elysia for military support, Lucien had looked forward to reuniting with his first love after 10 years â only to find her slaying beasts in perfect sync with Nocturne in a desert lit with golden sand.
Lucien fell for her again â and Nocturne noticed.
Later, at a ball, when Lucien tried to approach Aria, Nocturne blocked him.
To Aria, young Nocturneâs jealousy was endearing and childish. To Lucien, it was terrifying.
Aria waved her hand lightly.
âHe went outside earlier.â
âWhat? He left you here?â
âMaybe something urgent came up.â
Lucien made a baffled expression.
Aria quietly studied him and asked:
âWhy are you pretending not to know?â
ââŠKnow what?â
âDidnât you get a report from Tita?â
Lucien was the one who planted Tita in the palace.
It wasnât hard to deduce, given the clues Tita had dropped â a southern psychic noble, supportive of Aria, who had welcomed Aesape immigrants four years ago.
Judging by your reaction, I guessed right.
Lucien tried to keep a neutral expression, but Aria saw right through him.
â I wonât deny itâŠ
His voice didnât come through his lips but in her mind â Lucien had used telepathy.
â But I didnât ask that to provoke you. I havenât even received a report yet.
âAhâŠâ
Aria realized Lucien hadnât had time to meet with Tita today. Bound by non-disclosure contracts, even letters were difficult.
He knew almost nothing.
Her body relaxed.
âSorry. I misunderstood.â
â I donât mind⊠but whatâs going on between you two?
âNothing serious.â
She shrugged. The whole brainwashing and cold-shoulder thing would be resolved soon enough â it was practically a non-issue.
Lucien scanned her face briefly and asked:
â Sure doesnât seem like nothing. You seemed distracted during the meeting.
âIâm no longer a successor to the throne â I lost my right to speak.â
â You still gave a soulless answer when asked your opinion.
How did he know it lacked sincerity? Sheâd wrapped it in so much polish.
âThe people leading the nation should be the ones making decisions now. My opinion doesnât matter.â
â Of course it does, Ari. Youâre the one who ended the war.
Lucien spoke calmly.
â The official meetingâs over now, so tell me how you really feel. If you were still the crown princess, would you have signed a medical agreement with Cambiata?
âCambiataâs advanced medicine?â
Ariaâs eyes flashed red.
âYou dare call the aftermath of human experimentation advanced medicine?â
Suddenly, she could feel the phantom sensation of a dried foot twitching on her forehead.
She closed her eyes tightly, forcing down the revulsion.
Turning back to Lucien with a softened voice, she said:
âPlease understand. To you, that war ended long ago⊠but to me, it feels like it just ended last month.â
â Of course I understand. You shouldâve said that in the meeting.
âHmmâŠâ
Lucien probably didnât know â she didnât have the power to overturn the meeting. While she was unconscious, they had already held three sessions. Intervening now wouldâve only jeopardized her escape plan.
BesidesâŠ
When she first heard the treaty, she was shocked â but if she was going to give up the throne, sheâd have to give up control too.
âMaybe my brother is right. He never saw Cambiataâs labs â so he can judge the technology without bias.â
â Do you really believe that?
âI do. You said your opinion changed after touring the rehab center, didnât you?â
Aria spoke quietly.
âMaybe this is an inevitable tide of the times. If I were still in charge, it wouldâve taken me a long time to accept itâŠâ
Lucien looked at her sadly.
Despite the makeup, Ariaâs fatigue was showing. The weariness couldnât be hidden.
Marry Lucien, leave that place, don’t look back. XD
I know it’s too early to judge, just voicing my knee jerk reaction
