Chapter 9 â The Hunter Registration
âNumber 572.â
Michael, who had been sitting with a blank face holding a waiting ticket, looked up.
Under the LED display showing that number, a bored clerk tapped the desk.
âLetâs go,â Harin said, pulling Michael and little Eire toward the counter.
As soon as Michael sat on the round stool, it spun slightly.
âOh.â
Amused, he kicked his foot and spun himself around again.
âKyahaha!â
Eire, sitting on his knee, burst into giggles, clapping her hands.
ââŠâŠâ
The clerk watching this scene went expressionless, clearly unimpressed.
âStop fooling aroundâŠâ Harin muttered through clenched teeth, pushing down on Michaelâs shoulder.
âHaha⊠weâre here to register him as a Hunter,â she explained awkwardly, handing over Michaelâs ID.
The clerk glanced at the ID and muttered quietly, âMr. Kim DaebangâŠâ
Mixed blood, maybe?
His foreign-looking face was noticeable, but the clerk didnât care much.
âHmm. When did you awaken?â
âIt hasnât been a week,â Michael replied.
âThen letâs check your awakening stats first.â
âIâm a Hunter too!â Eire said proudly, popping her little head up over the desk.
The clerk blinked at the sight. âYour daughter?â
âYes.â
âOh, I didnât see her papers attached behind yours.â
The clerk flipped through the documents lazily, sighed, and said with disinterest,
âWell, anyone can take the test and register, no matter the age. But donât expect too much.
When kids awaken young, they usually only get a D-rank at best.â
He glanced at Eire with a dull, dismissive look.
Eire just blinked innocently.
Harin, however, felt a flash of irritation.
Ugh, all these Association clerks are the same. âLike youâd ever get a good rankââthat attitude.
She glared at him quietly.
âAlright, follow me to the test room,â the clerk said, standing up without even looking at them.
âItâs better not to expect too much,â he went on monotonously.
âEven if your status window shows a rank, it often gets corrected after the scan.
Like thinking youâre B-rank but ending up as E-rank.
Itâs because of unstable mana flow right after awakening.â
Michael was yawning so hard next to him that his eyes were watering.
âStill, arenât you being a bit judgmental?â Harin spoke up.
The clerk turned to her. âYouâre a Hunter?â
âYes. Why?â
âWhat was your initial rank?â
â…B-rank.â
âAnd now?â
âE-rank.â
The clerk raised an eyebrow, as if to say, Exactly my point.
âUnstable mana flow is normal for new awakeners,â he continued dryly.
âThe scanner not only measures mana levels but also corrects that imbalance.â
Harin closed her mouth again. Annoying as he was, he wasnât wrong.
When she first awakened, her status window showed B-rank.
She had been thrilledâuntil the official adjustment dropped her all the way down to E-rank.
E-rank isnât much stronger than an ordinary person⊠but still, Iâm a Hunter, she thought gloomily.
Just as they reached the test roomâ
âBut what happens if I come out as S-rank?â Michael asked casually.
The clerk barely held back a laugh.
âIf that happens, youâll be the second S-rank in Korea. Youâd get top-level benefits and supportâŠ
Well, if that happens.â
Michael made a thoughtful sound.
âHmm. That would be nice.â
ââŠSorry?â
He smiled, and for a moment the clerkâs face turned red from his good looks.
âAhem, well, your family can wait outside,â the clerk said quickly, leading Michael into the testing chamber.
âPlease lie inside the capsule. Donât open your eyes during the scan.â
Michael did as told.
âCapsule temperature optimal. Activating mana scanner.â
A blue light passed slowly over his closed eyelids.
âStarting mana balance adjustment.â
A faint mist surrounded him, seeping into his lungs. His muscles relaxed deeply.
Interesting machine, he thought.
Beep, beep, beepâ
After a few minutes, the scan ended, and the capsule opened.
âUhâŠâ
The clerk froze, speechless.
Michael sat up. âSomething wrong?â
The clerk stared at the monitor, eyes wide.
âN-no⊠not wrong, butâŠâ
Michael followed his gaze to the screen.
[Estimated Rank: S-Rank]
ââŠYou got S-rank,â the clerk whispered in disbelief.
Michael nodded calmly.
âI see.â
The clerkâs mind was chaos. Meanwhile, Michael stood and walked toward him.
âSo, itâs S-rank?â
âYes! Congratulations! Youâre the second S-rank in Korea! The management bureau will be thrilledâ
Youâll get every benefit, full support, andâuhâtheyâll explain the details laterâŠâ
âYou owe me an apology,â Michael said flatly.
ââŠSorry? For what?â
Michael tilted his head toward the door.
âFor judging me before seeing the results. You insulted me first.â
âAhâŠâ
The clerkâs face turned pale. Every dismissive word heâd said earlier came back to hit him.
âWhatâs wrong? S-rank doesnât include an apology bonus?â Michael smiled faintly.
The clerk just froze, speechless.

Meanwhile, chaos erupted in the lobby.
A scout whoâd been lazily scrolling his phone jumped up.
âWhat theâ?!â
Soon, every scoutâs phone was buzzing.
The Associationâs system had just sent out an update: Newly registered S-rank Hunter â Kim Daebang (Michael).
âS-rank?â
âThere must be a mistake!â
âCall HR, now!â
The guild scouts, all competing to recruit high-ranking Hunters, were shouting over each other.
âUnbelievable!âwell, a good unbelievable!â
Normally, most Hunters were F or E rank, maybe C at best.
An S-rank appearing out of nowhere? It was national news.
âWait, isnât he that guy from the Seoul Station dungeon break?!â
âWhat?â
Some recognized his face from the incident, and gasps filled the room.
***
Back at the test area, Harin heard the commotion from afar.
âHah⊠people in the lobby already know before we do,â she muttered.
âBut even after adjustment, heâs still S-rank⊠unbelievable.â
Even she was shocked, though she had seen Michaelâs power firsthand.
âWhyâs it so noisy out there?â
Michael came out, looking confused.
âWho knows,â Harin said vaguely. Itâs you, obviously, she thought.
âMaybe someoneâs running around naked,â he said casually.
She bit her tongue. Itâs because of YOU, idiot.
âAnyway, Eireâs turn. Oh, and that guy inside said he wants to talk to you later,â Michael added.
âTalk to me?â
âHe wants to apologize. For being rude.â
Then he went back inside with Eire.
Harin stood there for a moment, then chuckled softly.
âHah⊠he really knows how to catch people off guard.â
But that was only the beginning.
Because the moment Eire entered the testing capsuleâ
something beyond anyoneâs imagination began to happen.
