~Chapter 116~
Leahâs arrow hit the bear right in the chestâbut before she could react, its massive paw came swinging toward her face.
It all happened in a split second, but to Leah, it felt painfully slow.
She squeezed her eyes shut.
âWell, at least itâll be quicker than dying slowlyâŠ!â
But no matter how long she waited, the claws never struck her.
Instead, she felt something solidâsomeoneâs chestâblocking her.
She slowly opened her eyes.
Oh my god.
It was Johan.
âLeah, are you okay?â he asked, his brows furrowed.
ââŠJohann? How did youâhow did you get here?â
Surprise and relief flashed across her face.
âIâm fine,â she said quickly. âBut what about you?â
The bear was lying motionless on the ground in front of them.
That could only mean one thingâJohann had taken the blow meant for her.
âIâm okay,â he said calmly, then used his strength and mana to shove the huge beast aside.
âThereâs no way youâre okay!â Leah snapped, pulling him upright.
The bearâs claws had been sharpâshe knew he mustâve been injured, even if the beast had been on its last legs.
âI just wanted to make sure you were okay first,â he said, his hand trembling slightly on her shoulder.
âFine, Iâll let you check me first. But then Iâm checking your back, no excuses,â she said firmly.
She could feel how worried he was for her, and it hurt her heart.
âAlright.â
Johann carefully looked her over.
Aside from some scratches on her face and hands and a bit of dirt on her clothes, Leah was fineâsurprisingly fine for someone whoâd fought a bear under dark magic.
Of course, to Johann, even those tiny cuts looked unbearable.
âIâm fine. Now let me see your back.â
âItâs barely a scratchâhonestly, itâs embarrassing to show you,â he said, stepping back a little.
Heâs totally hiding it so I wonât worry, Leah thought, grabbing his wrist.
ââŠJohann!â
Just then, Mathias arrived with the imperial knights on horseback.
âHaah, everyoneâs safe,â he said with visible relief as he dismounted.
But when he got closer and saw Johannâs back, his face darkened.
âJohann, your backâŠâ
Leah gasped and hurried behind Johan.
âThis is what you call a scratch?!â
The claw marks had torn through his clothes and flesh. The bear mustâve used the last of its strength to land that blow.
âWhen I fight monsters, this is nothingââ
âHow can you say that?!â Leah cut him off sharply, furious.
Even Matthias, who was about to scold Johann himself, stayed quiet at her tone.
âYour Majesty, we need to get him to a healing mage immediately,â Mathias ordered.
âYes, go now.â
Mathias nodded gravely.
âGet on behind me. Try not to move too much or the wound might reopen,â Leah said, helping Johan onto her horse.
As she grabbed the reins, Mathias called out, âBy the way, that bearâdid you kill it, Lady Leah?â
âYes, Your Majesty,â she replied.
Even though sheâd slain the beast, Leah didnât look proud at allâshe looked miserable, because Johann had been hurt protecting her.
ââŠIncredible,â Mathias murmured.
The knights around him stared in disbelief at the dead bear and the woman whoâd taken it down.
âYour Majesty, weâll head back first,â Lia said.
âAlright. Iâll take care of the bearâs body.â
âThank you, Your Majesty.â
Leah bowed, then spurred her horse toward the hunting camp.
âLeah, are you mad?â Johann asked softly, holding her waist carefully.
ââŠNo, Iâm not mad,â she said quietly.
Her chest achedâit wasnât anger she felt.
âIt just hurts inside. You got hurt because of me. Does it hurt a lot?â
âYouâre just worried about me, huh?â Johan said, his voice lighter.
âIt doesnât hurt much. Like I said, it just tickles.â
Tickles? Who does he think heâs fooling? she thought.
âDonât lie just to make me feel better.â
ââŠAlright, it hurts a little.â
âIâll see for myself later if itâs just âa little.ââ
ââŠFine. Then it hurts a little more than a little.â
Leah couldnât help but laugh softly.
Even though she was upset, he was just⊠adorable.
Alma used to say if you think someoneâs cute when theyâre hurt, youâre done forâand Lia thought she was right.
âJohann, thank you for coming to save me.â
She realized she hadnât even said that yet.
âI couldnât lose you again,â he whispered, resting his head gently on her back.
There was so much longing and relief in his voice.
I didnât want to lose you again either, she thought, urging the horse faster.
As soon as they reached the camp, Lia ran to the imperial healer.
People gasped when they saw Johanâs torn back.
âThe Dukeâs wounds are terrible!â
âHow did that happen?â
Everyone crowded around.
Samuel hurried in and pulled the curtain around the tent.
âPlease remove your shirt, my lord,â the healer said.
He frowned as he examined the injuries, while Samuel helped Johan out of his shredded clothes.
His back was covered in deep claw marks and blood.
It had to be excruciatingâbut Johan kept smiling faintly, only for Liaâs sake.
â…â
Leahâs eyes filled with tears.
âLeah, it really doesnât hurt much,â Johann said, turning his head to look at her.
âIâm not crying because Iâm sad⊠Iâm just angry,â she said, voice trembling.
âYou said you werenât mad.â
âNot at you. Iâm angry at the one who did this to youââ
She stopped herself.
âAt the bear. Iâm angry at the bear.â
âHey, itâs fine. You defeated it, remember?â Johann said, gently patting her hand.
ââŠRight. I did beat it,â she replied.
If only I could do the same to the Empress, she thought bitterly.
That woman had taken too much from her already. Leah didnât want to lose anything more to her.
âLuckily, we treated it early, so there shouldnât be any scars,â the healer said after finishing.
âThough youâll need a few more sessions to make sure.â
âThank goodness. Thank you so much,â Leah said, bowing deeply.
âI was just doing my duty, my lady. Just avoid any strenuous activity for now, Duke,â the healer advised.
âYes,â Johann nodded.
He changed into clean clothes and left the tent with Leah.
By then, most hunters had returned and were chatting over drinks and snacks, but many of them couldnât help glancing curiously at the couple.
âJohan, are you okay?â Mathias asked as he walked over with Josefina.
âYes, Your Majesty. Iâm sorry for the trouble.â
âDonât apologize.â
When Matthias lightly patted Johanâs shoulder, Johann winced.
âOhâsorry! Force of habit,â Matthias said awkwardly.
âItâs alright,â Johan replied with a faint smile.
âLady Leah, thank goodness youâre safe,â Josefina said, her eyes still puffy from crying.
âYouâre our savior. Everyoneâs so grateful to you.â
Other nobles nearby nodded in agreement.
âEven Lady Tatianaâs parents were in tears when they heard what you did,â Josefina added.
âI only did what anyone would have done, Your Majesty,â Lia said humbly.
The Empress cursed that bear with dark magic just to kill me, she thought grimly.
If innocent people had gotten hurt because of her, she wouldâve never forgiven herself.
âAlright, everyone,â Count Pearson called from the stage. âItâs time to announce the winners of this yearâs royal hunt!â
People gathered around as he shuffled some papers.
âThis is⊠quite tricky,â he said, scratching his head.
âNormally, weâd choose separate winners for men and women, but⊠well, this yearâs results are unusual.â
He whispered with the senior judges and the Emperor before returning to the podium.
âWhatâs going on?â
âI donât know, but it sounds interesting.â
Finally, Count Pearson cleared his throat.
âAhem! This yearâs overall winnerâregardless of genderâis one person only!â
âWhat? Howâs that possible?â
âOne person? Thatâs not fair!â
âPlease, everyone, calm down,â the count said, raising his voice.
âYouâll understand once you hear the name.â
âThe winner isâLady Leah von Blumhardt!â
Every single person turned to stare at Leah in shock.
