Chapter 11
That fire wasnât something a small child could survive.
Mali felt crushed. He thought it wouldâve been better if he had died and Celine had lived. The guilt hit hard.
âDonât think like that. Celine is alive and safe.â
âWhat?â
âMy daughter survived because of that doctor. She was dying, but the doctor saved her. She was almost dead, but now sheâs alive, thanks to her.â
Miriamâs eyes shone with strength. Mali looked at her, then glanced at the people around them.
Normally, these villagers wouldâve been the first to talk badly about potions and reject them. But now, they avoided eye contact and said nothing.
Some even nodded in agreement with Miriam.
âDonât you dare insult her in front of me,â Miriam said firmly, putting her hands on her hips.
âNo matter what anyone says, sheâs the savior of our Lueta village.â
âMiriamâŠâ
âIf I hear anyone talking nonsense, Iâll be the first one to step in!â
After saying that, Miriam turned and left. Mali was speechless. Tony chuckled beside him.
âTony!â
âMali, you survived thanks to her.â
âWell⊠thatâs true.â
âIf she hadnât helped, your son wouldâve lost his father.â
At that, Maliâs heart dropped. The image of his sonâs young face came to mind.
He couldnât say anything. He just tried to calm his emotions while Tony gently patted his shoulder.
Maliâs eyes turned again to the woman called Rita.
âCome on, drink it.â
âNo! Itâs too bitter!â
âSomeoneâs acting spoiledâŠâ
âMmgh!â
The woman shoved the medicine bottle into Enokâs mouth and wiped her hands.
Enok looked pale, but the rashes on his skin slowly started to fade. The medicine worked.
âItâs like a miracle. She saved dozens of people. Iâd believe it if someone said she was a messenger of the gods.â
âWell⊠her temper doesnât really match a holy messengerâŠâ
The pink-haired woman stomped around like an angry squirrel.
âStill, we should be grateful.â
Feeling quiet and respectful, the two men fell silent.
Inside the shelter, Ritaâs sharp voice rang out.
âWhat do you mean, youâre spitting it out?! This stuff is expensive! âŠWhat? You want chocolate flavor? Are you kidding me?!â
From that day on, a rumor spread through Lueta Village:
There was a doctor so blessed by the gods that even her bad temper came from being âover-gifted.â But donât mess with herâshe bites back.
âYour Highness. We received a report from Lueta Village.â
âWhatâs the damage?â
âMore than ten homes burned down. Three people died. Many more were injured, but the doctors are treating them in a shelter.â
Cedric tapped his desk and let out a sigh.
It was a serious incident. Some were saying the fire was arson.
The knights were chasing the suspect, but strangely, the person kept getting away.
Relief goods and helpers were sent right away, but usually in disasters like this, the best outcome was just recovering the bodies and treating a few survivors.
ââŠWait. Only three deaths?â
âYes.â
âAre you saying the rest were badly hurt but survived?â
Cedric wasnât saying three lives were nothing. But stillâit seemed like too few.
Lueta Village was full of wooden buildings, and there had been a huge explosion. Many shouldâve been caught in the fire.
Even the blacksmith shop alone had over ten workers.
Cedric looked at Harun.
âYes, but apparently theyâre all recovering now.â
ââŠHow?â
âThey say a very skilled doctor appeared.â
Cedricâs eyes widened slightly.
A sudden fireâand a skilled doctor just happens to be there? Was this all just coincidence?
He knew that miracles did happen sometimes, but never to him.
Harun hesitated, then added,
âThereâs something else you should know.â
âGo ahead.â
âThe doctor⊠has your official appointment letter.â
Cedric gave a dry laugh and rubbed his forehead.
âMy letter of appointment?â
âThey say the medicine works very well. Even the soldiers arenât sure what to think.â
âDid you see it yourself?â
âNot yet. I did send someone, but the doctor already treated so many people that disturbing her now didnât seem wise.â
ââŠRight. If we act suspicious now, it might scare the people of Lueta.â
Cedric tapped his finger on the desk. Harun glanced at him carefully.
âFind out who that doctor really is.â
âYes, weâre working on it.â
âFind out everythingâwho they are, what kind of treatments they use, whatâs in their medicine, and why they have my letter. If anything seems strange, stop the treatment immediately.â
âWe checked the treatment process. Nothing strange was found. ButâŠâ
Harun cleared his throat and glanced toward the person sitting next to Cedric.
âThey say the doctor uses something like potionsâŠâ
After saying that, Harun counted silently.
One, two, threeâŠ
âDid you just say potion?â
Right on cue, a rough voice spoke up.
It was Tinte, the Grand Dukeâs royal physician.
âTinte, sir.â
âI asked if you just said âpotion.ââ
Harun sighed and replied.
âYes. But the doctor made the potion openly and honestly in front of everyone. Other duchy doctors were there too.â
âThatâs what they do! They pretend everythingâs normal and honest. Then they trick people with pretty-looking potions, and in the end, it all goes wrong. Thatâs what potion sellers are!â
Tinte shouted, his face slightly red.
He was normally calm and gentle, but he completely changed when potions were mentioned.
It had been two years since potions lost their reputation.
Back then, many nobles who used potions ended up coughing blood. Some said dark magic was involved.
Nobody knew for sure, but people believed the crown prince of Ludentio almost died because of a potion.
Because of that, the eldest daughter of Count Sycline lost her title and was punished.
The Grand Duchy had already been avoiding potions for many reasonsâeven before that event.
But the biggest reason was this: no good, safe potions were being sold anymore.
âTinte.â
âYouâre going to say Iâm being stubborn again, arenât you, Harun?â
Harun quickly swallowed his words.
âBut listen. When we go against nature, it always brings disaster. Healing injuries instantly and saving lives that are already at deathâs door will eventually cause even worse problems.â
Tinte had good reason to feel this way.
His own son became a vegetable because of potion side effects.
There was no better doctor than Tinte in the whole empire. But not even he could fix what the potion had done.
Thatâs why he firmly believed potions went against nature.
âThatâs enough.â
âLord Cedric!â
âTinte, I know what youâre trying to say. Potions⊠theyâre dangerous. Especially in times like this.â
Cedric tapped the table again and spoke slowly.
âBut for the last few weeks, Iâve felt really healthy.â
âYes. I noticed that too. I was surprised when you didnât return from your trip.â
In Cedricâs mind, the image of an old wooden cabin passed by like a dream.
And along with itâthe moment that short-tempered, brown-haired woman shoved a bottle into his mouth.
Nooo she was in disguise and now thatâll delay their reunion
