Chapter 15
The antidote worked faster than Eden expected.
Feeling a twinge of regret, Alperen spoke to Rodelia.
âHow do you feel?â
âHuh? Mm.â
Rodelia awkwardly sat up and put some distance between them. From her face, she looked pretty flustered.
She touched her hair and asked blankly, âWhy was I sleeping on your lap? I was sure I was waiting over here.â
It seemed the potion had wiped out her memories while she was under its effects.
If heâd known, he mightâve enjoyed it a bit longerâAlperen scolded himself for the thought and put on his usual âkind friend of your brotherâ expression.
âSorry, Rodelia. My aide mistook an experimental potion for tea. You got tipsy from it and blacked out for a bit.â
âOh, that blue tea.â
Rodelia finally understood, and her brow furrowed. She looked like she was trying to recall what wouldnât come back.
âIt was only temporary. Itâs over, so donât strain to remember.â
âI didnât⊠say anything weird, did I?â
âWeird? Are you hiding something from me?â
âNo, thatâs not itâŠâ
Her eyes rolled around, searching. Worried sheâd get embarrassed and avoid him if she did remember, Alperen changed the subject.
âSo, what brings you to the Tower?â
âAh!â
Remembering why sheâd come, Rodelia straightened like she was about to make a weighty announcement.
âI have a confession to make to you.â
ââŠA confession?â
Alperen also sat up straighter. He hadnât expected that word from her.
Dry-throated with nerves, he listened as she said, âYou were right. I did provoke Princess Nanael on purpose. I donât want you and the princess to get married.â
Her eyes were firm. Sheâd come prepared. Even Alperen felt tense.
âAnd I never meant to put myself in danger,â she continued. âI didnât think sheâd really push me down the stairs. If you hadnât been there, I might have been badly hurt. Thank you⊠for saving me.â
Rodelia shivered lightly at the memory. It was still a dizzying moment to recall.
Alperenâs face tightened too. As heâd suspected, Nanael had indeed meant to hurt herâand after what happened today, sheâd cling to Rodelia even harder. The thought alone was exhausting.
âIâm the one who should apologize,â he said quietly. âI shouldnât have left your side.â
âHey, itâs not your fault. Strictly speaking, my partner was Adrian.â
âTrue.â
âAnyway, the reason Iâve told you to beware âred hairâ since we were kids really was Princess Nanael. I once saw her from afar when I was littleâshe was⊠a lot.â
Even as a child, Nanael had been a budding tyrantâfamous for rotating through her attendants and bullying them. Rodelia had once been on the short list to serve her, but thankfully wasnât chosen. Nanael preferred girls from easy-to-push-around families with no consequences.
âI think of you like family, so I wanted you to meet someone good,â Rodelia said. âIf it came off childish, Iâm sorry. In my eyes, youâre too good to waste.â
âYou⊠think of me like family?â Alperen asked, stopping mid-listen.
Her answer left his chest oddly tight.
âOf course. I told you Iâd be your little sister.â
Little sister.
If heâd known how much that word would grate, he never wouldâve let her call him âoppa.â
His mouth tasted bitter. A bond set in childhood had refused to change even after theyâd grown up. Heâd thought being by her side like this was enoughâbut maybe he was greedier than he realized.
âSo it was all for me,â he said. âBecause you were afraid Iâd suffer if I met the wrong woman.â
âExactly. Thatâs it!â Rodelia lifted a thumb, pleased.
Something stubborn rose up in Alperen as he leaned toward herâ
âDeeelliiiii!â
With a loud yell, Adrian burst into the study; heâd been calling her name even before the door opened. He rushed straight to Rodelia, cupped her face, and fussed,
âI heard you drank the wrong potion! Are you okay? Your stomach? Your head?â
âMmpf, Iâb okeh.â
Her cheeks squished, Rodelia answered through a lisp.
After checking her over from head to toe, Adrian shot Alperen a glare.
âHow do you manage your subordinates? What if something had happened to our Deli?â
As expected of a brother obsessed with his sister.
Unruffled, Alperen replied, âThen Iâd take responsibility.â
âOver my dead body!â
Adrian snapped. âYouâre compensating properlyâfor Rodelia, especially!â
âAlright.â
âOppa, Iâm fine. I showed up without an appointment and made things hard for everyone.â
âOur Deliâs heart is so softâhow will you survive this cruel world?â he cooed, then sharpened his eyes at Alperen again. âTen healing potions.â
âThatâs odd. Isnât that what you want?â
âAhem. Rodelia and I are of one heart. Sheâll agree, wonât you, Deli?â
Brimming with confidence, he looked to her.
âI donât need healing potions,â she said.
âDeli, you tooâŠ?â
Looking betrayed, Adrian wilted. Rodelia ignored him cleanly and turned to Alperen.
âIâve only ever wanted one thing from you. Just that one, and Iâm satisfied!â
Her eyes sparkled. Alperen let out a soft laughâhe knew she meant breaking off with Princess Nanael, even if her reasons werenât exactly what heâd hoped.
âAlright.â
Since it was her wish, heâd grant it.
âI knew youâd refuâwait, really?!â Rodeliaâs eyes went round.
âIâll have news for you soon.â
âMmm-hmm-hmm~â
A clear little hum drifted through the Ferris estate from morning on. Rodelia was strolling the garden, humming.
âMy, my lady, you must be in a very good mood today.â
âItâs justâthe weather is faabulous.â
âIt is a lovely day.â
At Meiâs guileless reply, Rodelia flicked a leaf with her finger, then even did a few dance steps. Mei burst into laughter.
Today, the whole world looked bright. In a mood like this, she felt she could even laugh if a bird pooped on her.
Iâll have news for you soon.
At last, Alperen had decided to end the engagement. He wasnât the type to say one thing and do another. For eight years of her âbreak-up propaganda,â he hadnât once humored her with an empty âokay.â
Maybe she really could dodge that bad ending.
âHehe.â
A sly little chuckle slipped out, making Mei blanch.
âThat face is worrying. Feels like youâre about to start somethingâmy heartâs already pounding.â
âDo you think Iâm some walking disaster?â
âYouâre⊠delightfully unpredictable. Youâve caused two incidents just this month, remember?â
âHey.â
Rodelia pouted and side-eyed her. After a moment, Mei said,
âMy lady, just to checkâremember thereâs a regular gathering today for the ladies who had their debuts?â
âOh, right. There is, isnât there?â
