Chapter 10: The Reason for the Interest

I need to visit the Fairy Tree Forest.

That was the first thought that came to mind the moment I woke up one morning. The more I recalled what Ridan and Siaphil had said, the more convinced I became.

They said I gave off a vibe similar to the fairy trees, even though I had no connection to them. It was an odd thing to say the more I thought about it—but two people had now said the same thing, so there was little room for doubt.

Maybe if I go there myself, I can figure something out.

Though entering the forest itself might be difficult, I figured I could at least observe it from a distance.

After lunchtime, I began preparing to go out. That’s when, right on cue, the bickering duo showed up at my quarters again. As soon as I saw them, they also noticed me and raised their hands in greeting.

“Revisia.”

“Sis, what are you doing out here?”

“I’m planning to visit the Fairy Tree Forest.”

“The Fairy Tree Forest?”

“Right now?”

“Yes, there’s something I want to confirm.”

I explained how both of them had said something similar to me. I added how they said I felt like I was standing next to a fairy tree.

“Ever since I woke up after that serious illness, I feel like something’s changed… but I can’t quite tell what.”

“That really happened?”

“Is that true?”

Ridan and Siaphil exchanged glances, then spoke in unison.

“Then I’m coming too.”

“I’ll go with you, sis.”

“You both want to come with me?”

“I was thinking of visiting soon anyway.”

“It’s been a while since I’ve been there too. I’d like to go.”

Though surprised, I nodded in agreement.

Maybe if I go with them, I’ll find a clearer answer.

After all, they felt something I didn’t.

“Then, um… sis, maybe instead of going now, we should go at night. When there are fewer people around.”

Avoid people?

Ridan glanced sideways at Siaphil, then nodded.

“That’s probably best, Revisia.”

Why does it have to be when no one else is around? I was puzzled at first, but I agreed. The potential consequences of being seen walking around with both of them seemed too risky. Siaphil had a point.

“I’ll arrange for the forest to be open tonight.”

“Oh, so we’re allowed to go inside?”

At my question, Ridan ran a hand through his hair and chuckled.

“Of course. You know who I am, right?”

Unfortunately, I had no retort to that smug confidence.

We agreed to meet at 10 p.m. at the entrance to the Fairy Tree Forest. Thanks to Ridan pulling some strings, I was allowed into the forest itself. I gave a polite nod to the guards stationed at the gate.

“Sis, over here.”

Siaphil had arrived first and was waving at me.

“Looks like the Third Prince isn’t here yet.”

“I’m here.”

The reply came from above. Ridan leapt down from a tree and landed in front of us. Even though the trees in this forest were strictly managed, he had apparently been perched on a branch.

“Is that allowed?”

“There’s no rule saying it’s not.”

“Actually, it’s not allowed, sis,” Siaphil whispered to me like it was a secret. Ridan smirked upon hearing that.

“You’re still too small to climb up, huh? Want me to lift you up, little bro?”

“I’ll pass, brother. I don’t want to hurt the tree.”

How did these two end up in such a bickering relationship? I shook my head and followed after them.

As we walked deeper into the forest, the surroundings gradually brightened. The lush leaves of the fairy trees emitted a soft, pale glow. I was quietly awestruck by the sight of the forest tinted in purples, blues, and whites. I had to hold back from letting my mouth fall open in wonder.

Even the leaves that crunched underfoot sparkled as they were stepped on. When I glanced down, I witnessed yet another strange sight.

Huh?

The flowers that had been bowing their heads suddenly began to bloom, one by one.

I wasn’t the only one who noticed. Both Ridan and Siaphil, walking ahead of me, paused as they saw the flowers opening.

“This is…”

“What’s going on?”

Even the two of them, who presumably had been here more often, seemed to be seeing this for the first time. While we hesitated in confusion, something even more unexpected happened.

“What… is this…”

Balls of light began to appear from nowhere, gathering around me. I froze, unsure of what to do, and met the eyes of the other two. They, too, were wide-eyed, glancing back and forth between me and the lights.

What is this?

I couldn’t move. I had no idea what to do.

But why me?

Setting aside what the lights actually were—why were they gathering around me and not Ridan or Siaphil?

I looked at them pleadingly. Just then, Siaphil reached out toward the lights, his expression slightly dazed.

“Wait.”

It was Ridan who stopped him. He raised a finger to his lips and whispered, “Let’s just watch for now.”

The lights didn’t seem harmful. Still, I didn’t agree with just standing by and doing nothing.

You don’t even know what these things are!

Could it be that Ridan and Siaphil could see something I couldn’t? But neither of them said anything. They just studied the lights with serious expressions.

I hesitated, then slowly reached out toward them. They felt oddly warm and comforting.

It feels like they’re welcoming me.

Was that just wishful thinking, though?

I mustered more courage and moved my hand again. The orbs of light followed my gestures, drifting and swaying through the air. But before long, they scattered and vanished into the forest—like a dream dissipating.

And once all the lights had disappeared, I noticed something different in Ridan and Siaphil’s eyes as they looked at me.

Something…

A primal instinct screamed at me.

This might be dangerous.

“Ridan and Siaphil went to the forest together?”

Second Princess Elibet furrowed her brow upon receiving the report.

“Those two don’t exactly get along outside. What reason could they have for moving together?”

Especially Ridan—he was famously incompatible with nearly everyone in the Crayden Empire. For him to be seen with Siaphil was already strange.

“They weren’t the only ones who entered the forest last night.”

“Oh? Who else?”

“Fifteenth Princess was with them as well.”

“The Fifteenth… Princess?”

Elibet barely stopped herself from asking, “Who’s that?”

“And why was she with them?”

It was an unlikely trio—Ridan, Siaphil, and the nameless Fifteenth Princess.

“No matter how odd those two are, I doubt they’d randomly associate with someone that insignificant.”

She racked her brain, trying to recall anything about the Fifteenth Princess. But nothing came to mind. Surely they had crossed paths once or twice.

“Shall I look into her?”

What could a background check reveal that her own memory didn’t? Elibet debated, then reached out to the table beside her. There was one invitation left there.

“No need. I have just the thing.”

She would find out by seeing her face-to-face. Elibet decided to invite Revisia White, one of the nameless royal siblings, to the tea party she was hosting.

What on earth is happening to me?

Still haunted by what had happened the night before, I hadn’t been able to sleep properly. Now, bleary-eyed and groggy, I stared at the shining invitation in my hand. It was golden and gleaming—and from none other than the Second Princess herself.

Second Princess Elibet Sene Crayden. Even her name sounded elegant. She was one of the strongest contenders to be the next emperor.

“Why would someone like her send something to me?”

Could that strange incident in the forest have spread somehow?

No, that’s impossible.

Only Ridan, Siaphil, and I had been there. There was no way word could have gotten out.

We haven’t even figured out what those lights were.

None of us—me, Ridan, or Siaphil—had discovered anything about them. We’d gone seeking answers and come back with even more questions.

And now this invitation?

What’s happening to me, a nobody tucked away in a forgotten corner of the palace?

I ran my fingers through my hair, hoping for an answer that wasn’t there.

Do Ridan and Siaphil know about this invitation? Why would the Second Princess invite me?

I decided I would ask them. But strangely, neither of them showed up that day—as if they had agreed to avoid me.

I sat in my room, mind blank, folding and unfolding the invitation again and again.

The tea party is…

Tomorrow.

Why of all days are they avoiding me now?

I blamed them briefly, but it was meaningless. There was no way I could refuse an invitation from one of the empire’s most powerful figures.

I won’t be the only one invited. If I just quietly go and come back—

Then two familiar faces came to mind: Ridan and Siaphil.

After just one encounter, I was already tangled up with those two. Maybe I was getting ahead of myself, but I wasn’t being naïve—I was just overly cautious.

Then I have to be careful. Very careful.

This could be a matter of life or death.

If I think about those two, maybe I should avoid going altogether.

It wasn’t like I had a spare life to gamble with.

Either way, I was stuck. I agonized over the decision again and again.

When I asked Pell and Sheila, they told me to go with my gut. Pell cautiously suggested that refusing might be the safer option…

But he also seemed to know that someone in my position doesn’t really have that choice.

After worrying as if it were his own problem, Pell silently handed me a sheet of writing paper and a pen. A hint to respond, whether I would accept or decline.

In the end, I stayed holed up in my room for a long while before finally picking up the pen to write a reply.
