âEven Villains Have Ranksâ
All four of themâCarmen, Aria, Melody, and Lilithâgaped in shock.
âWhat⊠he means heâll live here?â The three women stared at Francis, frozen.
Francis remained composed, even smiling faintly:
âIt just occurred to me, but this seems the best solution: Countess stays close to Lilith, I stay close, and we all end up happy.â
But would anyone except Francis be happy?
Lilith, regaining composure, grasped his hand:
âMother, youâve seen how much we love each other, right? Now, let me show Francis around our home.â She rushed from the drawing room with him, leaving the three behind in stunned silence.
Carmen flopped onto the fainting couch, overwhelmed.
âIs this even possible?â Aria asked, disbelieving.
âI donât knowâŠâ Carmen groaned.
âHow can he say heâll live here?! That violates etiquette!â Melody even blurted out.
Carmen looked to Aria:
âMelodyâs rightâthis isnât proper, is it?â
Aria hesitated. Staying over while courting could happenâsometimes. But truly moving in? That was unheard of unless it was part of a formal, arranged political alliance.
Though rare, if Francis truly wanted to propose marriage, heâd at least have a dinner or two, or a few nights stay. But demanding to live there before anything official? Impossible.
Aria spoke gently:
âItâs unusual, but not completely unheard of⊠in arranged matches, the groom can stay over.â
Carmen shook her head:
âUsually the bride goes to the groomâs home!â
âYes, but thereâs no rule stopping the groom if he insistsâespecially if he wishes to propose soon.â
âPropose soon?â Carmen paled again.
Aria tried to reassure her:
âHe hasnât officially proposed yetâhe just asked permission to court her.â
Carmen felt reliefâfor a heartbeatâthen panic the moment Lilith whisked Francis away.
Lilith had taken Francisâs ring on her pinkie.
âHow could I even refuse? She just vanished!â Carmen moaned.
Aria calmed them:
âThe only way to stop it now is to prevent an official proposal.â
âDo I have to continue cleaning? Just like today?â Carmen asked dismally.
Melody, exasperated:
âI just wish I could punch her once!â
A spoon smacked Melodyâs head from Aria:
âSilence, idiot. Youâre worthless right now!â
Aria took point:
âBeating Lilith is useless. If Francis finds out, heâll hate us.â
Carmen nodded miserably.
They needed a plan beyond violence.
Aria emphasized the ring:
âThe fact he has Lilithâs ring… we canât grab it unless he removes it. Heâs skilled with a sword and top of his classânabbing it quietly would require hired muscle. Impossible.â
Carmen sighed:
âThen our only option is to make Francis give her up.â
Aria nodded:
âWe need to discover his weakness. Why Jill? On what point was he captivated?â
âBut Lilithââ
Aria interrupted:
âYes, sheâs beautiful. But how can we scratch her face to ruin her image?â
Carmen snapped, newly remembering Baron SchultzâLilithâs other fiancĂ©.
âThat Baron! We have to act before he finds out. Heâs offered an entire townhouse in the Undine district!â
Ariaâs jaw droppedâthis was monumental wealth.
âThatâs a dowry worth a baronetâs title!â
âThis money can help secure a better match for Aria or even Melody.â
But the Baron might back out if he hears Francis is in the picture. Disastrous.
Theyâd need a plan before Francis told him. Carmen suggested spreading a false rumorâthat Francis stayed over because of Aria, not Lilith, to mislead the Baron.
âAriaâs more believable,â Carmen reasoned. âAt least that shifts focus.â
Aria thought it over, her resolve hardening:
âWe have fifteen days before the Baron returns. Thatâs our window.â
Carmen perked up at the mention of money.
âIf we secure this dowry, our daughters will have better prospectsâAria, Melody, even Lilith can find noble matches.â
Now motivated, Aria leaned forward with a sly smile:
âI have an idea about Francis. Would you like to hear it?â
