<Episode 17>
âHe believed he had wronged the late Empress. He wouldnât even look at the portrait again. When His Highness ruined the painting, he didnât get angryâhe just said it was better if he was erased instead.â
All of it had happened because Deonis awakened as a mage, but the chief attendant didnât know that. He believed Deonis had stepped away from the throne because he blamed himself.
Melodyâs face grew somber.
âNo child would not want to see their motherâs face. At least, I always wanted to.â
âDid you lose your mother early?â
âSheâs probably⊠still alive.â
In Melodyâs memories, there was always a blank space where her mother should be.
Her mother left right after she was born, and her father, always on the run from mage hunters, raised her alone. Whenever she asked about her mother, she always got the same answer:
âMel⊠your mom loved you very much. She believed the happiest place for you was by your fatherâs side, so she left you with me.â
Even as a child, Melody thought her dad was a bit naive. If her mom had loved a mage knowing what he wasâand still leftâthere was probably only one reason.
âShe was afraid Iâd become a mage too⊠And I look a lot like my dad.â
Her eyes, nose, lipsâeverything was just like him. Thatâs why she couldnât find a trace of her mother in the mirror.
âThough⊠he said I had her green eyes.â
Someone else with green eyes like hers. Even if that person had abandoned her, Melody couldnât help but want to see her face at least once before she died.
âEven if itâs just a glimpse from far awayâŠâ
When she looked up, the chief attendant was gazing at her with a kind expression sheâd never seen before.
âIf youâre meant to meet, itâll happenâ as long as sheâs still alive.â
ââŠAs long as sheâs alive.â
If Melody could change the story and survive, would she get to see her mother?
She drifted off into thought, until the chief attendantânow back to his usual serious faceâspoke again.
âWhen His Grace finishes his current tasks, would you be willing to make some tools for the estate? Iâve heard some of your inventions are quite useful.â
âOf course.â
âBut⊠please care more about the appearance next time.â
His firm expression left no room for argument.
ââŠGot it.â
Melody mumbled, her voice small.
âYou stayed up again?!â
Melody quickly looked up at Annaâs voice. Morning sunlight was pouring through the windows. She slowly unfolded her stiff body.
âI just wanted to check one more thing before sleepingâŠâ
But that one thing wouldnât work out. It had been threeâno, four days now.
âThereâs no place for the magic to escape. So how do I reduce the number of magic cores? I canât walk around carrying a whole bed. The device can only handle up to double the released magic!â
âI have no idea what youâre talking about. Also, you didnât even eat dinner?!â
Melodyâs face had grown pale, and there were dark shadows under her eyes. Her already fair skin looked ghostly whiteâlike someone who had never seen sunlight.
âNow that you mention it, I am kind of hungry. Still, even using light magic formulas, itâs hard toâugh.â
Anna placed the food she brought in front of her, ignoring the mumbling.
âEat first. You can rant after.â
âThe magic core has limits. A monsterâs core can only hold so much powerââ
âEat first. Talk later.â
ââŠFine.â
The smell of soup made her stomach growl. Melody stuffed some bread into her mouth.
âSlow down!â
âI canât believe I actually made something like this work. I mustâve been way smarter in the future. The magic cycles by draining the energy and refilling it⊠But the draining partâs causing too much stress on the coreâŠâ
âThat sounds⊠very serious.â
Anna replied halfheartedly. All she really knew was that a magic core was a monsterâs heart.
âWhat am I missing? I need to finish this soonâto survive and help the Duke fall in love.â
ââŠLove?â
Anna suddenly shot up. A boring conversation was about to become interestingâand she wasnât going to miss it.
âDo you love the Duke?!â
âNo, not like thatâŠâ
âDoes he love you? Is it the whole social status thing?â
âNo, thatâs not it eitherââ
âSo there is love involved!â
ââŠThat partâs true.â
Melody corrected herselfâit was about Deonisâs future love for the heroine, Riheline, who hadnât even appeared yet. But Anna wasnât really listening anymore.
She babbled about how Melody had been trying really hard lately, and in the background, Melody thought she heard a knock.
âSince she hadnât returned to her quarters for a whileâŠâ
âYouâre meeting His Grace.â
Anna bowed, clearly excited. Sheâd never seen Deonis up close before.
Melody blinked at him, then tilted her head.
Something felt⊠off.
âThere was something I wanted to say if I saw the DukeâŠâ
Then suddenlyâshe clapped her hands loudly.
âOh, rightâmy vacation!â
âVacation?â
Deonis frowned.
âAccording to my contract, I still have two days left this month.
Can I use them now?
I got caught up in research and didnât get to visit home.â
His face didnât look thrilled.
âThree days off per month, was it?â
âYes.â
âWho added that clause?â
Rohan answered for her.
âItâs a standard item in employee contracts, Your Grace.â
Deonis seemed to think for a momentâthen gave a small nod.
âIâll have a carriage prepared.â
At the front entrance, a carriage was waitingâand Deonis stood beside it.
âWhat are you doing out here?â
âYou said you were going home.â
âYesâŠâ
Was he⊠seeing her off?
Just as she thought that, Deonis held out his arm.
âIâm hurt.â
âHow did that happen?â
âThe training grounds. There was an accident.â
The answer came from Rohan, not Deonis.
Melody tried to remember if he had any wounds in the workshopâbut couldnât recall anything.
âIt bothers me.â
Deonis walked forward and silently handed her a roll of bandage.
Rohan was right there.
So was Anna.
And six more staff members stood nearby.
ââŠYou want me to do it?â
âWho else is here?â
Behind Deonis stood Rohan.
Behind her was Anna.
And everyone else.
âYou said youâd keep caring about me.
From now on.â
âI did say thatâŠâ
She hadâbut did he have to say it in front of everyone?
Anna gasped.
The servants exchanged awkward glances.
The atmosphere turned weird.
Melody bit her lip.
Still⊠she couldnât just ignore a wound.
âCome inside.
Iâll take care of it.â
wow, blunt much~
