Chapter 15 â A Fairytale Roleplay and a Real Contract
“The script says we meet and fall in love at first sight.”
Herace disappeared for a moment, then reappeared wearing a small crown and a red cape. He leaned out the window dramatically and spoke in a prince-like voice.
âOh, woodcutter. What brings you to this remote forest alone?â
This was clearly acting. I had to fully commit to the scene.
âLetâs say the woodcutter is about 28 years old. Strong from working out every day, both for work and for funââ
âWoodcutter? Are you a ghost or something? Why donât you answer me?â
âAh, no. I just… wandered into the forest, and somehow ended up here. Iâm a woodcutter… sort of.â
âThen this must be fate, us meeting like this.â
Heraceâs voice returned to normal at the end of his line, so smooth it nearly made me forget we were acting. I quickly pushed away those thoughtsâit was ruining my focus.
âYes, fate. It seems like this is destiny.â
âI feel like I could fly from happiness.â
âHumans canât fly, but I get what you mean.â
I leaned on the window and whispered, âWhatâs your characterâs name in this scene?â
âYou can still call me Herace.â
âThatâs not very immersive.â
âI just donât like hearing other names from my girlfriendâs mouth.â
His words made me freeze for a moment. When a fairy tale prince says such things, it doesnât feel real.
âI see⊠Then please call me Sera. It’ll help me get into character.â
âAlright, Sera.â
Herace suddenly jumped up and sat in the window frame. The sun and wind lit him up like a storybook illustration.
âMeeting such a beautiful woodcutter like youâit feels unreal. Will you stay with me?â
âNo. I refuse.â
I waved my hand firmly. A strange man inviting me to stay in a forest? Suspicious! I had to be careful not to get kidnapped.
Herace looked like he was trying not to laugh, but then bent over, groaning like he was hurt.
âThis is supposed to be a love story. Are you trying to make it a thriller?â
âOh, Iâll do better from now on.â
Right, this was all practiceâfor our story. I had to focus.
âIâm still confused about whatâs real, but I think⊠I feel somethingâlike destinyâtowards you.â
âMaybe because weâve met before.â
âHmm, I donât remember that. Maybe you saw me first, and I just forgot.â
âBut still, that moment you saw me⊠that was fate too.â
I smiled. That was a perfect line!
âYouâre right,â Herace said softly, looking down like he was lost in thought. But then he smiled playfully again.
âIf you say so, Iâll believe it. Iâm just happy I get to see you like this.â
â…Is that enough for you?â
He paused for a while, tapping his chin, and then said:
â…Yes.â
âCan we stop acting now?â
I blurted it outâI wanted to finally talk about the contract. But before I could say moreâ
âPfftâHA!â Herace burst out laughing and fell from the window into the bushes.
âHerace! Are you okay?!â
I leaned over, panicked. He looked peaceful at first, but then his mouth twitched, and he started laughing again.
âOh wow…â
âSeriously, are you hurt anywhere?â
ââGlad Iâm aliveââyou really said that, huh?â
He covered his mouth and opened his eyes, flashing that mischievous smile again.
âI feel bad that Iâm the only one this happy.â
Then he suddenly pulled me down with him, and I ended up lying with my head on his arm.
Was this still part of the act?
âIsnât the sky pretty, Philena?â
Even though it was daylight, his voice felt dreamy and slow. When I looked at him, he gently turned my face.
âCan you look at the sky, Philena?â
I was supposed to be Sera right now… but I asked:
âWhy?â
âSo I can look at you freely.â
If letting him look would end this acting scene, fine. I turned to the sky.
âFive minutes.â
âAlright, five minutes.â
Would he worry about how Iâd count exactly five minutes? I almost explained, but stopped myself.
âJust look at the sky.â
It was blue, with huge clouds puffing up, blocking the sun a little. It wasnât too hotâperfect early summer weather.
âHerace, Iâll count five minutes using my pocket watch. Thatâs 300 seconds.â
âSure. Count 300 seconds, Philena.â
âI will.â
âBut⊠I hope they go slowly.â
Seconds canât go slower⊠but I didnât say that. I just turned my head back to the sky.
After our âsky watching,â I finally noticed: the locked door was still locked. And no one was inside the house. I panicked, but Herace calmly jumped through the window.
That height! He wasnât just some average person.
âCome in.â
âExcuse me,â I said politely and entered.
The cottage wasnât large by noble standards, but it was cozy and had everything: kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom.
While I looked around, Herace said softly:
âMaybe itâs because I was born a commoner, but I like being independent.â
âI see.â
âHard to explain? My first home was an orphanage. Itâs been a long time, but still.â
âI understand now. Thatâs why there are no servants here.â
âExactly. This place is private. Special to me.â
Herace brought over two teacups and sat across from me. He handed me one, saying it was hot and to drink it slowly.
âItâs my own space. A place no one else knows about.â
It was lemon teaâmy favorite. As I sipped, he added:
âA place Iâm only showing you.â
So this place was a secret he trusted me with. That made it the perfect setting to finally talk aboutâŠ
âLetâs discuss the contract between Herace Gray and Philena Light.â
