Chapter 52
ââŠ?â
König, Eloise, and I all turned toward the faint sound.
Standing some distance away from the fountain wasâ
âGerard?â
Königâs adjutant, and Riaâs twin brother: Gerard Viper.
âGerard, itâs been a while. But why are you staying so far away?â
The closer Eloise stepped toward him, the further Gerard retreated.
âProbably because heâs afraid youâll torment him again. The way youâre tormenting Cherry.â
König spoke casually, as if the answer were obvious.
âŠLike me?
Wait. Did that mean Gerard had been forced into âdress-upâ too?
That would certainly explain why he looked horrified at the table piled with accessories.
âOf course. Ria and Gerard are both petiteâwhatever you dress them in, they look adorable.â
Eloiseâs words were so light, so matter-of-fact.
Huhâso it was true?!
But⊠petite? Who, exactly?
I was speechless.
The Viper twins were both tall, especially Ria, who could hold her own with trained knights.
Their sharp features and stern eyes didnât exactly scream âcute.â
But then it hit me.
Next to the overwhelming Kreutz siblings, even the Vipers would look like children.
And Eloise adored âadorableâ things. No wonder sheâd treated the twins like dolls too.
âThose were fun times,â Eloise said, smiling nostalgically.
Though clearly, for the victims, those âfun timesâ were nightmares best forgotten.
âL-letâs leave the past behind us and move on to business.â
Gerard shook himself violently, as if trying to dislodge the memory from his very body.
âIf you shudder like that, you just make me want to play dress-up again.â
Eloise was not an opponent to be escaped so easily.
âHiii⊠P-please, my lady, just hear me outâŠ!â
And so the rose garden rang with Gerardâs tearful pleas.
* * *
Later â the reception hall of Black Dragon Castle.
Thanks to Gerardâs âsacrificeâ (now sporting earrings from the western continentâs latest fashion), we managed to move the discussion indoors.
But new trouble awaited both of us.
âThis wonât do!â
âAnd why should I listen to you?â
Round two of the Kreutz siblingsâ war.
I could only fidget helplessly between them.
All becauseâ
âCherry is my partner squirrel. She should be with me.â
âI only came here because Cherry was present. If I canât be with her, then I have no reason to listen to you.â
The supposed topic was the Crystal Minesâbut the real argument was: whose arms I would sit in.
âŠSo childish.
Who would believe these two were the Empireâs most formidable powersâthe Duke of Kreutz and the âVillainess of Yggdrniaâ?
I sighed deeply.
Gerard looked equally drained, his voice flat as he tried to mediate.
âMilord, itâs not as though Lady Eloise intends to keep Lady Cherry forever. Could you not yield just for the duration of the discussion?â
He spoke as gently as possible, but König acted as though he hadnât heard a word.
If Gerard is trying to persuade König like this, then Eloise must be holding some leverageâŠ
Well, in that case.
I hopped up from the table.
Tap, tap, tap.
I crossed the low table and settled softly into Eloiseâs waiting hand.
âMy goodnessâŠ!â
Eloiseâs expression shone with rapture, as if sheâd just won the world itself. Her hands trembled as she carefully cradled me.
Meanwhile, König looked utterly betrayed.
âCherry, how could youâŠâ
âChuut.â
Itâs for the greater good.
I waved my tiny paws at him in reassurance.
âThanks to Lady Cherryâs wisdom, we can finally begin.â
Gerard slipped me a perfectly ripe chestnut as thanks and began the business discussion.
The siblingsâ topic: a certain mine.
âI heard youâve been investigating the Gelende Territory,â König began, now all seriousness again.
âThatâs right,â Eloise replied.
âHave you discovered anything?â
She smirked faintly. âWhy should I tell you? Rose Trading Company intends to participate in the Gelende Mine auction.â
As she toyed with my tail between her fingers, she spoke with the same composure as if we werenât discussing fortunes.
Königâs brow tightened.
âYou truly intend to participate in that auction?â
âOf course. Isnât it natural for a trading company to invest where profit can be found?â
âAnd youâre well aware of the risks.â
âAll things are high risk, high return. If the rumors are true and a mine is there, itâs a jackpot. If not⊠well, itâll sting a bit.â
Her tongue clicked against her teeth.
Crystal.
Waitâcrystal?
Crystals were primarily used for magical tools.
Hardly the kind of thing Rose Trading Company, known for luxury goods and jewelry, usually dealt in.
But Eloiseâs eyes glittered with conviction.
König noticed too.
âWhy take on such risks?â
âTo chase the beautiful and the rare is only natural.â
Lounging against the sofa, Eloiseâs smile turned crooked.
âUnlike someone, I have no family estate to inherit. No house to fall back on. I need moneyâa great deal of it.â
âYou already have enough wealth to buy yourself a countâs title,â König shot back immediately.
But she didnât flinch. Instead, she leaned closer, narrowing the space between them, making him tense.
âThe more money, the better. I intend to craft accessories from crystals.â
âWith something so expensive?â
Gerard blurted out before he could stop himself.
A crystal no bigger than a fingernail could buy a small house in the capital.
âNobles will claw each otherâs eyes out for it.â
Eloiseâs tone was certain.
âDo you know what I hear most often when I sell to noblewomen?â
ââŠWhat?â
Gerard tilted his head, König only pressed his lips together.
âTsk. Of course men wouldnât know.â
Eloise clicked her tongue, snapped open her hand fan, and covered her smile with it.
âIt isnât the same as the others, is it?â
Her voice dripped with mocking imitation. Her eyes half-lidded in false modesty, she perfectly mimicked the young noblewomen of the capital.
âChuut! Chuut!â
I couldnât help itâI squeaked applause, clapping my tiny paws together.
âOh, thank you.â
Eloise beamed at my enthusiastic response.
ââŠWhat are you doing?â
König grimaced as if heâd swallowed something bitter.
âYou donât get it, little brother. The point is: accessories need something new to spark a craze. Something to start a syndrome.â
âAnd you believe that will be crystal?â
âFinally, weâre speaking the same language.â
Eloiseâs eyes curved in satisfaction.
