Episode 18
âBy the way⊠when you come down to the villa, do you usually eat alone in this big place?â
As the meal progressed, Autumn asked questions she had been curious about. But he didnât answer kindly or in detail.
âYes, I do.â
âThe villa is so beautiful⊠You must have a lot of guests?â
âSometimes.â
Randel calmly cut into his well-done steak, answering only as much as necessary. Unlike him, who ate elegantly, Autumn was nervously slicing into a steak still dripping with red juice.
âSeriously, why did he even ask me to eat together if he was going to be like this?â
His cold demeanor didnât seem like it would improve no matter how many times she saw him.
Annoyed by his lukewarm responses, Autumn pouted and kicked her chair a little with a soft thud.
âMy chair seems unusually small. I thought maybe there was another resident here besides you, Director.â
âNo way this lovely, dainty chair was made for you.â
Only then did Randelâs gaze shift to the elegant, jewel-adorned chair Autumn was sitting onâa bit too small for an adult male. His eyes briefly flickered with irritation, then turned to Husson.
âWhy is that here?â
Autumn stared as Husson whispered something to him.
âThe chef here makes great potato dishes.â
âOh, yes. You should try some.â
Autumn subtly moved the potato dish toward herself, ears perked, pretending to be curious too.
But Randel didnât seem willing to explain. Again, she mumbled to herself in frustration.
âWhatever. Whether thereâs someone else who uses the chair or not⊠But the way heâs actingâlike heâs trying so hard to hide somethingâitâs suspicious⊠Wait. Hold on.â
Suddenly, her eyes lit up.
Autumn shot up from her chair.
âThat chair, it belongs to her, right? HahahaâŠâ
She wore a knowing smile and muttered to herself dramatically.
âMiss Kiss, I think youâre misunderstanding something⊠Could you sit down calmly? Youâre scaring me.â
Despite Hussonâs attempt to stop her, Autumn ignored him. She ran her fingers through her long hair and stretched dramatically toward Randel.
âThat chair⊠was used by her, wasnât it?â
âIf you mean herâŠâ
Randel looked reluctant to explain, which only made Autumn more confident.
She folded her arms and nodded silently.
âEven if it were me, Iâd expect her to have a special chair. Thatâs not unusualâitâs only natural.â
Slide
She hurriedly lifted her dress hem and stood up.
âNo need to explain. I didnât mean to sit on a chair that belongs to someone else.â
She gently brushed the chair where she had been sitting, her eyes dreamy.
âMiss Kiss, that personâŠâ
âOh, itâs fine. I understand. This chair must reflect her taste.â
ââŠI have no idea what youâre talking about, but really, itâs okay to sit there.â
Randel glanced at her with a puzzled expression, curious to see how far she would go.
But that look didnât last long. He calmly resumed cutting his steak.
âSheâs just someone who visited here⊠once in a while.â
Autumn slumped back into the fluffy chair, looking disappointed.
âWhat? So the chair doesnât belong to our genius playwright?â
âExcuse me?â
âYou said Iâd get to meet the genius playwright if I came here. I thought this chair belonged to her!â
âCould it be⊠that genius playwright whose studio is in the theater basement?â
She had asked Randel this once before.
But rather than Randel, Husson burst into laughter.
When he started to say something, Randel quickly covered his mouth.
âOh⊠If itâs a sensitive subject, you donât have to answer.â
âYouâll see⊠in the villa.â
He looked a bit awkward.
âAnyway, Iâve been around this whole villa and you never introduced me to anyone. Are you deliberately hidingââ
âOh, did I forget to mention?â
Autumn tilted her head in confusion, mouth full of meat.
âPffftâHahaha!â
Husson laughed so hard he nearly fell over.
âThatâs because, Miss Kiss, youâve already met her!â
âW-What? You mean the genius playwright who supposedly hides in the theater?â
âIsnât that right, Director?â
âHuh? Me?â
Autumn stared wide-eyed at him, frozen with her knife and fork in midair.
âWhen did I miss them?! Was it that old man I met at the entrance? Or that person who greeted me near the gate?â
Randel put down his fork and raised his head.
âItâs me.â
âWhaaaat?â
Autumn let out a dumb sound and stared at him blankly.
Scrapeâ!
The fork in her hand screeched against the plate and slipped from her fingers in shock.
âYouâre the one Miss Kiss described as a once-in-a-century genius playwright.â
Randel bent down to pick up the fork with a napkin and handed it to a servant.
His movements were flawlessly graceful.
Then, he handed her a new utensil and said politely:
âThat would be me. Randel Wentworth Austin.â
âPfft! Thatâs right, Miss Kiss. I can vouch for that!â
—
It felt like she had just heard something she shouldnât have.
Autumn suddenly choked and reached for water.
âW-Water!â
âWhen formal rehearsals begin, youâll naturally come to know. I didnât think it was necessary to explain early.â
Randel poured her water and slid it toward her.
âTh-thank youâŠâ
âAnd⊠this is a secret not even the other actors in the troupe know.â
âPfffftâ!â
Autumn spit out the water at his words.
âPlease keep it to yourself.â
Servants bustled around her.
Randel adjusted his seat and looked at her.
âAre you okay?â
His tone was polite again, though with a hint of sharpness, as usual. This back-and-forth in his demeanor had confused Autumn more than once.
ââŠNo, not at all.â
She couldnât meet his gaze and instead poked at her food aimlessly.
âHow could you trick me so perfectly?â
âI never said I wasnât the playwright.â
âThatâs the same thing! You never told me properlyâyou always avoided it!â
Just thinking about it made her irritated.
She stabbed at the peas rolling on her plate.
âNow that I think about it⊠Youâre right. I apologize.â
âThere it is again. That âsorryâ!â
Suddenly angry, Autumn grabbed the nearest knife and pointed it at Randel.
Husson, startled, rushed back and forth between them.
âM-Miss Kiss, your hand!â
âI heard Lady Vetchesâs table manners were impeccable⊠I guess I was misinformed.â
âDirector, watch out for the broken glass!â
âAnd you⊠how can you stay so calm after revealing such a huge truth?!â
ââŠOh.â
âOhhh?â
Randel looked at her calmly and opened his mouth again.
âI didnât realize that truth would mean that much to you.â
