Chapter 157Â
Luciard smiled faintly as he read a letter from Hestia.
Just then, the door burst open without a knock.
âUncle! I heard thereâs a letter from Tia!â
âLeon, what did I tell you about coming into my office?â
Leonhard stopped, shut the door, and then knocked properly. Luciard couldnât help but laugh at his obedient nephew.
âCome in.â
âIs it true Tia wrote to you?â
When Luciard waved the letter he was holding, Leonhardâs face lit up and he rushed to sit beside him. Luciard lifted him onto his lap and read again.
âHmm⊠if even the Northern Duke is sick, it must be really bad. Shouldnât we send the new medicine right away?â
âI already sent everything we had a few days ago.â
âBut from whatâs written here, it seems like there are more confirmed cases than in the reports!â
Because Leonhardâs successor training included lessons on the bloodpox crisis, he quickly noticed the numbers didnât match.
âIâm worried about sending Tia alone. I shouldâve gone with her!â
âThat would only distract her from her work. Besides, you have a very important jobâguarding the ducal castle.â
âTch⊠not that Iâm doing much.â
Understanding his concern for Hestia, Luciard patted his head.
âAre they still making more medicine?â
âThatâs⊠the problem.â
Luciard pulled out a document from his desk.
âAll other ingredients are fine, but we canât get Ruberuâthe most important one.â
âWhat about Novelli Town? They grow it there.â
âWeâve already taken all they had and made about 4,000 pills. But the north alone has over 10,000 suspected casesânowhere near enough.â
Other regions also had 1,000 to 2,000 cases. Many people were desperately trying to find more Ruberu. Luciard had asked Kenneth and the imperial family for help, telling them to send any they found straight to the south. But none had been found in the empire.
âThe imperial family promised to get it from abroad quickly⊠but it will take at least a month or two to find and transport.â
Jerome was also trying to find a substitute herb, but that would take just as long. The longer it dragged on, the more people would die, and the empireâs economy would suffer.
Leonhard grumbled, âI wish Ruberu would just fall from the sky. Then everyone would be happy.â
âYes⊠that would be nice.â
Both sighed deeply.
Thenâ
âYoung maaaaster!â
Basil came running down the hall at full speed.
âI found it!â
ââŠWhat?â
âBasil, you sound weirdâŠâ
âI found Ruberu! And not just a littleâmountains of it!â
Luciard and Leonhard stared wide-eyed at each other and jumped up so fast they toppled over their chairs. They didnât even notice the pain, scrambling to Basil.
âYou found Ruberu? Really?!â
âWhere? How long until it gets to the south?â
âItâs not about how longâitâs already here in Chest! You should see it yourself!â
They followed Basil quickly. Outside the main entrance, several carriages had entered the castle grounds.
âWaitâthat emblem!â
Leonhard recognized it immediately, and so did Luciard.
âCount Humphrey!â
The man who had brought the Ruberu was Arthur Humphrey. He greeted them politely.
âItâs been a while. I hope youâve both been well.â
Luciard shook his hand in surprise.
âI have, but what about you? Youâve had many hardships, havenât you?â
Valeron, Arthurâs territory, had been one of the hardest-hit areas early on, and Arthur had also lost his parents to bloodpox.
âThe medicine we sent before wouldnât have been enough for everyone.â
âIt wasnât enough, but it put out the worst of the fire. And when I received your notice about trouble making more medicine, I thought I could helpâso I came.â
âYou mean youâre the one who found the RuberuâŠ?â
Arthur gestured to the carts.
âIt matched the description in your letter, so I brought it right away. We werenât sure if it was Ruberu, so I wanted you to check.â
He opened a wooden crate, revealing the bright herb. Jerome arrived, out of breath, and confirmed it was genuine Ruberu.
âCan we buy it immediately?â Luciard asked. âName your price and weâll pay right away.â
âNo payment needed.â
ââŠWhat?â
âI didnât bring it to sellâI came to donate it to Winstone.â
Luciard was stunned. Arthur knew very well how valuable Ruberu was right now. He could have charged far above the market price.
âWhere did you get so much?â
âItâs a long story. May I explain inside?â
Luciard reluctantly invited him in.
Inside, Arthur looked around.
âLady Frost isnât here?â
âTiaâs away on a trip.â
âIn this situation? Whereâ?â
âShe went north!â Leonhard said proudly. âSheâll be back in twenty-one days!â
Luciard didnât really want Arthur to know that, but Leonhard had already blurted it out.
âHonestly, I still donât fully trust him.â
But he wasnât treating Arthur as an enemy eitherâjust trying to figure out where he stood.
âLeon, isnât it time for your lessons?â
âOh, right. See you later, Count!â
Once Leonhard left, Arthur commented, âLady Frost is truly remarkable. Everyone knows how bad things are in the north, yet she went anyway. Even when she came suddenly to Valeron before⊠sheâs an impressive person.â
âShe is. Thanks to her, we could develop the medicine quickly.â
âAnd thanks to that medicine, I was able to save my only son. Iâm grateful.â
âIâm glad the young lord pulled through. Iâll make sure she hears your thanks.â
Arthurâs expression turned serious.
âYou wanted to know how I got the Ruberu. But first, thereâs something else you need to hear.â
He handed Luciard a document.
âA week before the state of emergency was declared, seven Novelli refugees with bloodpox and three people from another kingdom illegally entered Valeron.â
Luciard read it carefully, but something felt off.
âIf they were illegal entrants, you caught them immediately?â
âNo. I think they left Valeron the day they arrived at the port.â
âThen how could you write such a detailed report? You can only do that if you question them directly.â
Arthur handed over another document.
âThey werenât completely illegal. The ship they came on was carrying a large amount of Ruberu.â
Luciardâs voice dropped.
âYouâre saying that both infected people and the main ingredient for the cure were found on the same ship. You know exactly what that implies.â
âYes. Thatâs why Iâm telling you the truth.â
Arthur took a breath and spoke firmly.
âThe person who spread the plague across the empire⊠was my father, Malrus Humphrey.â
Luciard stared at him in silence. Arthur gave a faint smile.
âYou suspected already, didnât you?â
âI had vague suspicions, but I never imagined youâd admit it yourself.â
âI never imagined my father would commit such a terrible crime either. But itâs true.â
He added quietly, âHe didnât act alone.â
âYou mean thereâs someone behind him?â
âYes. And Iâve come to you because I want to catch that person.â
