Chapter 141
âI only said I was thinking about it. I never said Iâd actually do it. So please, calm down.â
After the commotion, Hestia decided to explain the situation to her parents and close people like Kenneth first.
She moved to a quiet place to avoid rumors spreading if she tried to explain in the middle of a crowded hall.
Only then did they nod in understanding, but their reactions split into two sides.
The first group was the disappointed but supportive side.
âIf youâre thinking about it, it means youâll probably do it eventually. Donât bother explaining anything to others. Just let it be.â
âHave you thought about where youâll hold the wedding? If you want, weâll gladly lend you the imperial palace.â
Anna and Sylvester were clearly in this camp.
The second group was against the marriage.
âWhat nonsense! No one knows for sure until you actually walk down the aisle!â
âHmm⊠Forget what everyone else says. Only move forward when you’re truly sure. Itâs not that Sir Luciard is a bad match, but itâs better to decide when youâre confident.â
Naturally, Derrick and Kenneth were in this group.
So she managed to calm things down for now with those closest to her. But figuring out how to explain things to people who didnât know the whole story was giving her a headache.
âSir Luciard, Frost House is fully on your side. If thereâs anything you need, just say it! Oh, what a fine son-in-law you are. I used to worry whether weâd ever marry off our eldest daughter.â
Anna practically clung to Luciardâs arm, smiling ear to ear.
âHey, what are you saying?! I havenât agreed to this marriage yet! Itâs not even a real engagementâ Mmph!â
âOh ho ho, darling, why donât we step aside for a private talk?â
Since Sylvester and Kenneth didnât know the engagement was fake, Anna quickly dragged Derrick away before he could say too much.
âWell, if talk of marriage has already come up, itâs probably going to happen. Two people I like forming a family? Thatâs the best news Iâve had all year!â
âHowever, using the phrase “this year” gives the impression that half of the year has already passed. Itâs still the first day of the new year, Your Majesty.â
Sylvester laughed heartily while Kenneth muttered beside him, unimpressed.
âItâs just a joke. Thatâs how happy I am. And the two of you make a great pair. Honestly, if you get married, thereâll be lots of heartbroken people. Even Iâve heard how popular you both are.â
âThatâs too generous, Your Majesty. Nothingâs been decided yet.â
âYou know what they say â well begun is half done. Once you make up your mind, the rest happens quickly.â
âThen perhaps, Your Majesty, itâs time you find a suitable lady for yourself.â
At Kennethâs comment, Sylvester froze, still smiling, and looked at him in disbelief.
âYour coming-of-age ceremony isnât far off. Wouldnât it be good to have a strong empress by your side when you begin ruling in full?â
âHm⊠I feel like I forgot something important. Iâll justââ
âYour Majesty? Where are you going? You havenât answered me yet.â
Even an emperor dreaded marriage talk. Sylvester was caught and dragged back into a lecture.
âTia, since weâre on the topic, why donât we talk more about this marriage thing?â
âUh-oh.â
And Hestia, just like everyone else, wanted to avoid marriage nagging.
âIâm just going to get something to drink real quick!â
Before Anna could grab her, Hestia bolted out the door. She briefly caught Luciard looking at her like âWhat about me?â, but survival came first.
Unfortunately, even outside, there was no escape.
The hall was full of gossips curious about what had happened.
Seeing all the sharp eyes watching her, Hestia hurried to a nearby terrace.
The cold air brushed her cheeks â but at least she could finally breathe.
âHaah⊠Marriage, really? I canât believe this.â
Why did Luciard have to say something so unnecessary?
âNo, if weâre being honest, itâs not Luciardâs fault. Wasnât it the Duke who brought it up in the first place?â
He was the one whoâd mentioned marriage out of nowhere.
âWhy is he so interested in us anyway? Could he⊠actually like meâ?â
Hestia snorted and waved the thought away.
âNo way. He wouldnât⊠I mean, he shouldnât like me.â
âIt hurts to hear you deny it like that, Lady Frost.â
She jumped, startled by the voice behind her.
And there he was â Gabriel.
The moment she heard his voice, goosebumps shot up all over her skin.
âYour Grace⊠what are you doing here?â
âI saw you slip away and got curious about what you were talking about with your family. Then I heard you saying my name.â
He stepped closer, smiling in a way she couldnât read.
âIt seems you have no intention of marrying Luciard, do you?â
ââŠWhy do you think that?â
âWell, if the marriage had been agreed upon, you wouldnât have acted so flustered.â
Sheâd been so focused on calming everyone that she hadnât thought about how it might look.
âMore than anything⊠I know the truth.â
ââŠWhat do you mean?â
âI know you and Luciard are faking your engagement.â
Her eyes flickered. Her lips parted slightly, and silence stretched for a moment â then Gabriel chuckled.
âSo transparent. Youâre not a good liar, are you, Lady Frost? Amazing how youâve fooled everyone until now.â
âDamn it, I let my guard downâŠâ
Realizing sheâd made a rare mistake, Hestia bit her lip.
Gabriel hadnât guessed she was lying.
Heâd already known.
âI donât know what youâre talking about. Are people still spreading that fake engagement rumor?â
She smiled politely, pretending not to understand.
Gabrielâs smile widened as he reached forward, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
The unexpected touch made her flinch.
âYou donât have to hide from me. Iâm on your side.â
ââŠIâm not sure what you mean.â
âDidnât you just wonder if I might have feelings for you?â
Sheâd hoped he hadnât heard that.
The very topic made her want to flee.
âThatâs not what I meant. If that upset you, I apologizeââ
âI am interested in you.â
Gabriel cut her off with a firm tone. Hestia was left speechless.
âIâm very⊠interested in you.â
His fingers brushed lightly along her neck. She tensed instantly.
âDoes that mean⊠you admit it?â
On paper, the Duke and the daughter of a baron were an unthinkable match.
Normally, nobles would never admit to liking someone of lower status.
Yet Gabriel showed no hesitation.
Some might call it romantic.
But to Hestia, it was terrifying.
âHonestly, I thought Iâd shown plenty of signs. But you never responded. Or rather, you pretended not to notice.â
His casual tone only made her more nervous.
âWas it because of your fake engagement? Were you avoiding other men because of it?â
ââŠOf course not. And please stop saying itâs fake. People could misunderstand.â
âYou donât need to pretend with me. But if thatâs what you prefer, Iâll play along.â
His confident eyes gleamed, like he held her in the palm of his hand.
âDid you ignore my feelings because of that engagement? Engagements are just public announcements. If you change your mind, they can be broken.â
âYou make it sound like Iâm using the engagement as an excuse to avoid you.â
âThatâs exactly what Iâm saying. If that wasnât the case, thereâs no reason youâd pretend not to notice my feelings.â
He looked so certain â like no woman could possibly reject him.
âTrue, breaking off an engagement can bring shame. But if you leave Luciard and come to me, no one will dare say a word against you.â
âYou seem to misunderstand. I donât share your feelings. Even if my engagement ends, I would never come to you.â
âWhy not? Thereâs no one better than me.â
His genuine confusion made her lip tremble slightly.
ââŠI know youâre an exceptional person. But my heart simply isnât moved.â
âOof. That hurts my pride. Iâm not used to being turned down, you know.â
The look in his eyes â bored, dismissive â made her scoff internally.
âIs that what someone whoâs in love looks like?â
There was no love in his gaze. Only something dark and possessive.
âYou must have a strong sense of duty, Lady Frost.â
ââŠDuty?â
âYour duty to keep your engagement intact. You suppress your feelings and avoid other men, all to protect your reputation.â
So basically, itâs not that you donât like me â youâre just too bound by duty.
That was what he meant.
âLady Frost⊠No, Tia.â
He casually dropped a nickname she never gave him permission to use. She frowned.
The cold glint in his eyes softened into a warm, love-struck gaze.
And before she realized it, his arm had slipped around her waist.
âI can treat you better than Luciard ever could. Power, wealth, respect, looks, personality â I have it all. Leave him, and Iâll give you whatever you want.â
As he reached to tilt her chin and leaned closer, Hestia shoved his shoulder hard.
âThatâs incredibly disrespectful! Youâre completely mistaken. I donât see you as a man at all!â
His expression hardened briefly as he stepped back.
âEven if the world ends, Iâd never choose you. So stop wasting your time.â
She looked up â and froze.
Gabriel was staring at her with a cold, unreadable gaze.
But then he smiled again, as if she imagined it.
ââŠI was too hasty. But Tia, one day, youâll choose me.â
Disgusted by his smug tone, Hestia turned and walked away.
Left alone on the terrace, Gabriel smiled â a smile that said heâd already decided how the story would end.
She would rather die and Luci WHERE ARE YOU !??? That creep is saying stupid things
