Episode 5
I followed Lionel, the commander of the Wild Tiger Knights, for about 10 minutes to a building near the auditorium where the entrance ceremony was to be held.
âMy lady, Iâve brought the guest.â
âLet him in.â
With Princess Arisâs permission, the door opened, and I walked in.
She stared at me with a curious gazeâpart suspicion, part expectation.
âYouâre sure itâs this guy?â she asked.
She didnât seem fully convinced. Maybe because I didnât give off any powerful aura.
âTrue treasures,â Lionel replied confidently, âcan only be recognized by those with the eyes to see their value.â
He clearly believed I was the mysterious swordsman who saved her.
âSo, you’re saying this man is a treasure?â
âExactly.â
Lionelâs eyes were blazing with something strongâlikely a sense of rivalry.
âAs the commander of the Wild Tiger Knights, Iâve met countless warriors. But none like this one. He is the swordsman who saved you.â
Princess Aris looked surprised.
âHearing such high praise from you is rare. That alone is enough to trust your judgment.â
Her suspicious gaze turned to one of desire. The kind of desire you feel when you find something you must have.
âSorry for doubting you earlier,â she said. âI can be quite suspicious. I hope you donât mind.â
She approached me slowly, took out a button, and handed it to me.
âHere, take this. Youâll need it, wonât you?â
I stared at the button. This was a key moment.
âThis is a turning point,â I thought. âHow I respond now could change everything.â
But the answer was obvious.
âUm⊠can I ask what this is all about first?â
Of course, I already knewâbut pretending not to know was the best option.
âWhy are you giving me this button? Why was I brought here? Who is this âswordsmanâ youâre talking about?â
No one would openly admit to being a mysterious rescuer right away. Staying vague was the right move.
âHoho,â Aris smiled.
âHaha,â Lionel chuckled.
âEven now, you still pretend not to know?â
âHe must have a reason for hiding his identity,â Lionel added.
Perfect. My act convinced them even more.
âI really donât know whaââ
Suddenly, Lionelâs aura exploded. Like a wild tiger about to strike. A chilling pressure hit me.
[You resist the aura of the Wild Tiger.]
But Iâm immune to status effects. I easily brushed it off.
âPfftâHAHAHAHA!â
Lionel burst out laughing. He looked like he was having the time of his life.
âLionel?â Aris looked confused.
She hadnât noticed the aura attack at all.
âAh, sorry. I was just so surprised. I didnât expect someone to deflect my killing intent.â
âWait, what?â Aris frowned.
âSo, heâs your equal?â
âMaybe even stronger,â Lionel nodded.
âThis is crazyâŠâ
Lionel kept smiling like a kid on Christmas.
âHeâs not just a treasure. Heâs a once-in-a-lifetime miracle. You must keep him, no matter what.â
I chuckled inwardly. Things were turning out better than expected.
âSo, you wonât pretend anymore, will you?â Lionel smirked.
âAlright,â I said confidently.
âYes. I was the swordsman who saved you from the wyverns.â
âThen Iâll see you at the entrance ceremony.â
âYes, Iâll see you then.â
âAnd think seriously about my offer to join us.â
âIâll⊠consider it.â
As I left the room, Aris waved goodbye.
Once the door closed, she suddenly bent over and trembledâ
Thump, thump, thump, thump!
âthen stomped her feet and turned to Lionel with a bright grin.
âLionel! A blessing has just fallen from the sky!!â
Lionel looked at her fondly, like a proud father.
âIâve never been lucky in my life⊠until now!â
Aris was famously unluckyâso unlucky that for 17 years, she never once felt things went her way.
âHaha. Maybe that fortune teller was right. Maybe that boy really is the âlucky starâ you were destined to meet.â
âYes, yes! He must be!â
She smiled like a blooming spring flower. It could light up a room.
âIf thatâs true, then my bad luck ends today.â
But just then, as she was walking out, she bumped a shelf. A book fellâ
âcorner-firstâ
âstraight toward her pinky toe.
Tiiiiiing!
Thankfully, a magical shield appeared just before the book hit.
Not from Lionel, not cast by Aris herselfâthis was automatic.
It was a pinky toe protection artifact, custom-made by royal magicians just for her.
âGuess my bad luck isnât fully gone yetâŠâ
Her mood dropped instantly.
âI thought I’d finally be free of bird poop and stubbed toesâŠâ
Just thenâ
âAaaahhhhh!!â
âa scream from outside.
âLetâs go,â Aris said.
âYes, my lady.â
They rushed over. A crowd had gathered.
At the center were two boysâone of them was me, Jian. The other looked just like me.
âHow dare you show your face here!â the other guy screamed, pointing his sword at me.
âI told you to disappear. You were supposed to live your life in hiding!â
A maid lay on the ground nearbyâprobably knocked down by that guy.
âYou didnât think Iâd make it here, did you?! Thought I wasnât good enough to pass the entrance test, huh?!â
His eyes burned with anger.
I sighed quietly.
ââŠOf course not, brother.â
âBrother?!â Aris finally understood.
âSo thatâs why Jian was hiding his strengthâhe was avoiding his own family.â
âDonât talk like weâre close! You ignored my warning. You rejected my kindness. So nowâŠâ
He charged, his sword glowing with mana.
âDIE!â
His sword raced toward my neck.
âAaaahhh!â the crowd gasped.
Aris frowned.
âSuch a sloppy attack wonât even touch Jian. No need to intervene.â
But just as she decided to watchâ
âI made eye contact with her.
The sword was inches from my neck. Yet, I didnât flinch. No fear, no emotionâjust calm expectation.
âThat lookâŠâ
To Aris, it felt like I was saying:
âIâm giving you the chance to repay me.â
âWow. His family problems must be worse than I thoughtâŠâ
She gave Lionel a signal.
CLAAAAANG!
Lionel blocked the sword in an instant.
âThatâs enough.â
âGet out of the way!â
ââŠL-Lionel? The knight commander?!â
âThis isnât just sibling rivalry anymore. Youâve crossed the line.â
The brother growled and glared at me from behind Lionel.
âAlways youâŠ!â
Then he sheathed his sword, turned around, and stormed off.
âLetâs see what Father thinks when he hears about this.â
And he disappeared.
The crowd erupted.
âDid he just try to kill his own brother?â
âHeâs gonna get expelled for sure.â
I didnât care about their gossip.
I bowed once to Lionel and Aris, then walked toward the auditorium.
âMy lady.â
âYes.â
Lionel returned to Arisâs side, eyes gleaming. She understood what he was thinking.
âLook into that guy. His brother, his family, and everything about Jian.â
âIâll send an investigator immediately.â
Aris smiled as she watched me walk away.
âThis might be easier than I thought.â
Later, in a bathroom near the auditoriumâŠ
The âolder brotherâ appeared again.
Even though heâd just tried to kill me in front of a crowd, I wasnât worried.
âGreetings to the great Master.â
Because that guy wasnât really my brother. It was all an act.
[Barahan â DopplegĂ€nger â LV.72]
ââŠYou acted well.â
âThank you! But your performance was even better, Master! Especially that look you gave to trigger Lionelâpure genius!â
His eyes were full of passion.
âIâll give it my all in the next scenario too!â
I blinked.
âWait. What is the next scenario?â
I barely even know the main plotâŠ
