Episode 60
âLetâs look around some other places. Oh, rightâwhereâs Veraâs room?â
âM-Miss Veraâs room is this way.â
The order was given in a voice full of suppressed anger.
The servant quickly led the way, careful not to irritate Lennox further.
âHa!â
As soon as Lennox opened Veraâs door, he let out a bitter laugh.
The difference was obvious at a glance.
The bed was covered in cute dolls.
The walls were decorated with cheerful portraits of young Vera.
Fresh flowers in a vase sat on the dresser.
Vera had gone abroad to study before Estelleâs weddingâso she had been gone for at least five years.
Yet her room, left unused for years, was in far better condition than Estelleâs room, which had only been vacant for a few months.
âDisgusting.â
Lennox clenched his fist so tightly that veins bulged on the back of his hand. He walked to the window.
When he pulled back the curtains, the sunlight stabbed into his eyes.
Blinking slowly, he took in the garden viewâand felt even more displeased.
âEstelle must have spent her whole life staring at gray brick walls.â
Down in the garden, Glessia was shaking the count by the collar.
Imperial knights stood awkwardly around them, making half-hearted gestures to stop her but not truly intervening.
No one dared to physically step between them.
âSister.â
After finishing his inspection of the mansion, Lennox came down to the garden.
âLet him go.â
âAre you ordering me?â
âIf you keep holding him, we canât arrest him.â
ââŠFair point.â
Glessia accepted her younger brotherâs reasoningâand promptly threw the count aside.
âUgh.â
The count landed hard, falling on his backside.
âF-Father!â
Matthias called out in a small voice, afraid to come too close in case trouble came his way too.
âThat day you touched my wifeâdo you know why I let you live?â
Lennoxâs voice was cold.
âBecause Estelle was watching. I couldnât show her something so cruel.â
âD-DukeâŠâ
âThis marriage is between me and Estelle.â
ââŠâ
âWhich meansââ
His words came out like he was biting each one.
âItâs none of your business. Understand?â
âY-Yes, I understand. Completely!â
Count Bellonsa bowed his head, pale and sweating.
Lennox had clearly overheard his conversation with Estelleâespecially when he had tried to pressure her into divorce.
âItâs certain! He heard it, and thatâs why heâs saying this!â
His fears had come true.
âTake him away.â
At Lennoxâs order, the knights pulled the count to his feet.
He was dragged away, looking half-conscious.
âF-Father! Where are you taking him?!â
âTo prison.â
ââŠâ
âIf you want to join him, go ahead,â Glessia threatened.
Matthias instantly backed away without another word, abandoning his father for his own safety.
Lennox gave a short, bitter laugh at such cowardice.
âIâll make him beg for death instead.â
That was exactly why he hadnât killed them on the spot.
A few days later, at the Winterlen estateâ
Crash!
Startled, a maid dropped the vase she was carrying.
âMy lady, youâre awake!â
Estelle was sitting up in bed with her eyes open.
âWhen did you wake up? Oh, never mind thatâplease drink some water first.â
The excited maid fussed over her.
Estelle was still groggy from just waking up and followed the maidâs words without resistance.
âIt feels like I had a really long dream.â
The memories were hazy, and she couldnât remember what the dream was about.
While she was trying to clear her head, the maid mentioned something familiar.
âThe duke took such good care of you. Heâll be sad he wasnât here when you woke up.â
ââŠWhere is the duke?â
Her voice came out dry and raspy.
âPardon?â
âWhere is he now?â
Then, the memories before she collapsed came flooding back.
âHe knows I can use demonic energy.â
And he knew about her dead ex-husbands.
She felt a surge of fear.
âHeâs at the palace. Heâs been going often lately because of Count Bellonsa.â
âBecause of the count?â
âOh, you wouldnât knowâthis happened while you were unconscious. Count Bellonsa was arrested for tax evasion.â
âWhat?â
Estelle couldnât make sense of the situation.
âThey say the scale of it must be huge, since itâs so rare for the duke to personally step in.â
âHow long⊠have I been unconscious?â
âTen days.â
Ten days.
Plenty of time for many things to happen.
Just thenâ
Pat-pat-pat!
A small figure ran up and threw himself into her arms.
âMamaaa!â
It was Duren.
The warmth of his little body melted Estelleâs heart.
âDuren, you must have been so worried. Iâm sorry I slept for so long.â
âItâs okay!â
âItâs okay?â
âYeah! Iâll grow up fast and protect you, Mama!â
His eyes sparkled.
It was touching, and also a little heartbreakingâhe was too young to protect anyone, not even himself.
She gently stroked the soft hair on the back of his head.
âIâll be your boyfriend, Mama,â he declared with a clenched fist.
âSo I can protect you!â
âHm? Do you even know what a boyfriend is?â
âYup! A boy friend!â he answered brightly.
For a second, Estelle wondered if she had misunderstood the meaning of âboyfriend.â
âHow do I even explain this?â
Her still-groggy mind struggled to find the right wordsâ
âA married woman canât have a boyfriend,â a husky voice interrupted.
Startled, Estelle looked up to see Lennox, and her body instantly tensed.
With her secrets exposed, she was at a disadvantage in front of him.
âBut they said I can!â Duren protested.
âWho said that?â
âMy friends!â
Lennox chuckled softly.
âWho are these friends of yours? Married people canât have lovers. So donât go after your fatherâs wife.â
That was news to Duren. His lips parted in surprise.
While Duren thought it over, Lennox turned to Estelle.
âEstelle.â
âYes?â
âItâs been ten days since you collapsed.â
âI⊠heard.â
Was this when heâd bring up her demonic energy?
Or the dead ex-husbands?
Either way, she expected to be interrogated like a criminal.
Surely, being sent to the temple was next.
âTwo hundred forty-three hours and twenty-seven minutes,â he said.
ââŠWhat?â
âThatâs how long it was from the moment you collapsed until I heard you had woken up.â
To be exact, it had been 243 hours, 27 minutes, and 45 secondsâbut he didnât mention the seconds, thinking that might sound excessive.
In truth, even what he said was already excessiveâbut he was too far gone to realize that.
âI must have been in shock. Even mandrake medicine canât make someone completely invincible.â
Estelle gave an awkward laugh, sneaking a glance at him.
She also realized she hadnât told him the medicine hadnât fully worked.
âDid the doctor say anything while I was unconscious?â
âNo.â
âReally?â
âYes. He just said youâd been overworked and would probably sleep for a while.â
Estelle instantly thoughtâThat doctor is an idiot.
Sleeping for ten days straight and brushing it off as âfatigueâ was suspicious to anyone.
But Lennox seemed to take it at face value.
âHeâs never been sick himself, so heâs insensitive to othersâ suffering.â
Still, this meant he wasnât likely to use her health as an excuse to demand divorce anytime soon.
âThough divorce isnât really the main issue right nowâŠâ
Her face darkened.
âI heard a little about Count Bellonsa just after I woke up.â
ââŠâ
âThey say you went to the palace because of my father.â
Estelle spoke the word âfatherâ awkwardly, watching Lennoxâs expression.
âWhat exactly happened?â
