Episode 51
Duren tilted his head.
âYou mean⊠who I like more?â
âYeah!â
Of course, they all thought he would pick them.
âDudu likesâŠâ
Gulp.
The children swallowed nervously.
And thenâ
âI like my mom the most!â
Just thinking about his mom made Durenâs eyes sparkle with happiness.
âWhen I grow up, Iâm going to marry my mom!â
âWhat? You canât do that!â
âWhy not?â
âMy mom told me you canât marry your mom. I wanted to marry mine too, but she said no!â
âBut I want to.â
âI told you, you canât!â
âMy mom will say itâs okay.â
âBut⊠butâŠâ
The other child was older than Duren, but only by two or three yearsânot enough to argue logically.
While he was struggling to think of a comebackâ
Clap clap clap!
The music ended, and a loud round of applause filled the room.
The children turned their heads, surprised at the noise.
Under the sparkling chandelier, they saw the Duke and Duchess of Winterlen standing close together like a loving couple.
It looked like a scene from a fairy tale.
The children gasped.
âSheâs so prettyâlike a fairy!â
âNo, a princess!â
âWhat are you talking about? Sheâs obviously Queen Berry!â
They argued, but when someone mentioned âQueen Berryâ from a popular kidsâ show, they all nodded in agreementâno one was prettier than Queen Berry.
âDuren, does your mom have a boyfriend?â
Duren looked confused. âHuh? Whatâs a boyfriend?â
âA man friend!â
âNope!â
âThen instead of marrying her, you can be her boyfriend! My mom says a husband and a boyfriend are different!â
âYou even defeated that scary black monster! You can do it!â
âYeah! You can do it!â The children cheered for Duren.
After dancing a performance that made everyone remember they were âhusband and wife,â Estelle and LennoxâŠ
ââŠâ
ââŠâ
âŠbecame awkward with each other. The closeness they had just shown disappeared, and now there was a space between them big enough for Duren to stand in.
Was I too much? Lennox wondered.
In his past life, even when he attended parties with his then-wife, they had never danced together. He hated even brushing against someoneâs sleeve, so he would never have asked someone to dance first.
I must have lost my mind.
He knew it had been half an impulse. He told himself it was to avoid suspicion from the princess, but really⊠that was just an excuse.
The truth was simpleâhe just wanted to dance with her.
âŠYep. Iâm crazy.
Lennox touched his earâit felt warm.
âYour Grace.â
âHuh? Yes? What is it?â
Did she notice how unnatural he was acting? Or maybe she realized sheâd been tricked?
âHere.â
Estelle held out a white handkerchief.
A handkerchief?
âYou can use this to wipe yourself,â she said quietly. âYou donât like touching other people, right? And since there are many eyes on us, you canât make a scene. So, I thought this might help.â
Lennox was speechless.
Yes, he hated being touchedâbut it wasnât because of hygiene. He just didnât want any trace of Magi on him to touch others.
It was true he didnât feel as much discomfort with her⊠but a handkerchief?
When he didnât answer, Estelle took it another way.
âI also brought theseâjust in case.â
She pulled out a sealed pair of glovesâbig white ones that were obviously his size.
âTheyâre clean! I told them to wash and seal them right away.â
Lennox felt strangely unsettled. He couldnât even explain to himself why.
âAre you angry?â
âDo I⊠look angry?â
âYes. If you think I crossed a line, you can tell me. Iâll be careful from now on.â
âNo, thatâs not it.â
âThen what?â
Normally, his actions always had a clear reason. But this time, the only explanation he could think of was, Iâm crazy.
When he met Estelleâs clear gaze, all those thoughts vanished.
âNo, thank you for thinking of me. Iâll use them well.â
He took the gloves and handkerchief, putting the gloves on to wipe his handsâthen started putting the handkerchief over them.
âYour Grace.â
âWhat?â
He didnât seem to realize what he was doing. Estelle was about to point it out whenâ
Ding! Ding!
A clear bell sound drew everyoneâs attention.
âIâm glad so many have come to celebrate my daughterâs birthday,â the Emperor said.
He stood on the platform with Princess Alice, his hand on her shoulder, showing his deep affection.
âMy beautiful daughter, is there something you want as a gift?â
âIâd like anything you give me, Father,â she answered coolly.
It was just a formal questionâthey had already discussed what she wanted.
âYouâre as kind as you are beautiful. Who could ask for a better daughter?â
Everyone agreed politely.
Smiling proudly, the Emperor presented a tiaraâand then a necklace as well.
âSheâs getting so much attention from him lately,â someone whispered. âHe never used to celebrate her birthday like this.â
The reason was no secretâafter losing his son, the Emperor doted on his only remaining child.
âAnd the temple has come to bless you as well.â
âReally?â Alice pretended to be surprised.
âLet them in.â
The doors opened, and a tall priest in black robes entered. His golden hair shone under the chandelier, and his gentle face made people gasp in admiration.
But Estelle felt her blood run cold.
Helios.
As he entered, Lennox stepped in front of her protectively.
âIf you want to leave, you can go now.â
âIâm fine,â she said, standing beside him and looking at Helios, who wore his priestâs robes as if heâd been born in them.
âMay the Princess always have the blessing of God,â Helios said as he gave Alice a blessing with a warm golden light.
It wasnât much power, but the crowd was impressed.
âHeâs glowingâhe must be a high priest.â
âThereâs no glowâŠâ Lennox muttered.
The âglowâ was just people being dazzled by Heliosâs looks.
Even Alice looked unmoved.
The gift-giving continued, but Lennox showed no interest.
âIâve seen enough. Letâs take Duren and leave,â he said.
âYou havenât given the princess a gift yet,â Estelle reminded him.
âMe killing monsters every day is a gift,â he replied.
It was trueâhe didnât need to give her anything else. In fact, giving her something could cause misunderstandings.
Most importantly, he was worried about Estelle.
She coughed blood again.
She thought sheâd hidden the stained handkerchief well, but he had noticed.
âSit here. Iâll get Duren.â
âIâll come with you.â
âNo, youâre sicââ
âIâm what?â
âI mean⊠youâre tired.â
She wasnât tired at all, but before she could argueâ
âFather! I donât need this tiara or necklaceâor any other gifts people give me!â Alice suddenly declared.
âWhat are you saying?â the Emperor asked.
âThereâs only one thing I really wantâto use the holy relic, the Libra Scales!â
âThe relic? Why?â
The Libra Scales could tell truth from lies. The Emperor was shocked.
Alice went on confidently.
âBecause the Duke and Duchess of Winterlenâs marriage is fake.â
She looked straight at them as she said it.
