Chapter 31
Huh.
Estelle and Duren were sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the world around them.
Estelle was holding a book tightly in her hand, and a tall pile of books stood next to her. Just by looking, it was easy to guess what had happened.
Lennox was about to wake Estelle but paused.
If the concept of âfamilyâ could be captured in one image, it would be this moment.
It looked so peaceful that he didnât want to disturb it.
âShe just got out of bed recently⊠I canât bring myself to interrupt her sleep.â
With that thought, Lennox looked down at Estelle, a little crookedly.
âDid I really give her actual mandrake medicine?â
The results werenât satisfying.
Even now, just watching her made him feel uneasy.
Would that unease go away if she gained some weight and got stronger?
She kept pushing herself for others with that small, weak bodyâbarely half his size. He couldnât help but keep watching her.
She didnât care if she broke herself trying to help the one she loved. That kind of person was right in front of him.
âIf everyone in the world was like youâŠâ
His hand slowly reached toward her.
His fingers trembled slightly.
But after so much hesitation, he ended up not even touching a strand of her hair and just muttered,
âThen the word âbetrayalâ wouldn’t exist.â
If that were true⊠maybe Lennoxâs family would still be intact?
He pushed that impossible âwhat ifâ to the back of his mind.

âI fell asleep just like thatâŠâ
Estelle woke up feeling refreshed, but for some reason, a chill ran down her back.
Her plan to sleep separately from Duren had failed.
âTonight, I wonât fall asleep before Duren does.â
Determined, Estelle took messy-haired Duren to the dining room.
There, she unexpectedly met Lennox, who was already seated.
Their eyes met, and Lennox looked visibly flustered. After a brief hesitation, he said,
ââŠYou woke up earlier than I thought.â
âWhat does that mean? Is he upset? Or was he waiting for us?â
Estelle’s thoughts showed clearly on her face.
Duren, clinging tightly to her, eyed Lennox warily.
Just then, Pippin, who stood behind Lennox, spoke up.
âNormally you say eating is a waste of time and donât leave your office. Yet youâve had five cups of coffee here this morning alone.â
So heâd been waiting here since very early.
Estelle finally understoodâLennox had just said something awkward because he wasnât used to the situation.
âYou can just say âGood morning,â you know.â
ââŠWhat?â
âIn situations like this.â
She had said she wouldnât help him get closer to Duren, but this much was okay.
ââŠGood morning.â
Lennox looked at Estelle, then at Duren, and said awkwardly.
âThe weatherâs really nice today. Isnât it, Duren? Say good morning to the man.â
âGâmorning.â
Duren replied reluctantly.
Lennox still seemed uncomfortable.
Estelle noticed but deliberately seated Duren right next to Lennox.
ââŠâ
ââŠâ
Of course, just sitting next to each other wouldnât make them talk easily.
Awkward silence filled the air.
âBring me the morning paper.â
âHere it is, madam.â
Pretending not to notice the tension, Estelle took the paper and skimmed through it.
âNothing special yet.â
Count Bellonsa had been quiet lately.
She thought Matthias would use his usual excuseâfailed businessâand ask for money again.
âBut maybe theyâre being careful since I changed my attitude.â
Still, their patience probably wouldnât last long.
âItâs time to make my move.â
Her health had improved. She had nothing to fear.
Even if the atmosphere at the dining table was painfully awkward.
âIâve been reading this paper a long timeâŠâ
Lennox and Duren hadnât spoken a single word to each other.
Wiggle, wiggle.
Duren squirmed, like he wanted to move farther away from Lennox.
Glance, glance.
Lennox, pretending to read documents, peeked at Duren.
They werenât ignoring each other completely.
âCome on, the adult should start the conversation!â
Watching them made Estelle want to scold both of them.
âDuke, arenât you curious about anything Duren does?â
Eventually, Estelle stepped in.
After hesitating, Lennox managed to ask one question.
ââŠWhat have you been up to lately?â
Ugh. Terrible.
It sounded like something an uncle would say at a boring family reunion.
Duren looked up at him with wide eyes.
Was that question for me?
He clearly wasnât sure.
âHe didnât even ask what Durenâs doing today. âWhat have you been up to?â What kind of question is that?â
Estelle felt a headache coming.
This conversation wasnât going anywhere without help.
âDuren, the manâs asking what we did last night. What did we do?â
Duren’s eyes lit up. âMom told me a star story!â
âStar story?â
âThe star went BOOM!â
Duren punched the table to mimic the story.
He must have liked the part where the star was compared to a punch.
âAnd the man was bad!â
âNot that manâhis great-great-great-grandfather.â
Estelle quickly corrected the misunderstanding.
âRight! The great-great-grandpa hurt the pretty lady! So she got mad and he got caught!â
Now Lennox realized what kind of story Duren was talking about.
His eyebrows twitched.
No one likes seeing their ancestors made into villains in a kidsâ book.
Estelle quickly changed the subject.
âWhat other books did we read?â
âHmm. Lots!â
He couldnât remember. Duren didnât know how to lie.
âAs you heard, Duren loves books. Did you know that?â
Of course, he didnât.
Lennox shook his head.
âWeâre going to read a book together again tonight. Want to join us? Since youâre Durenâs father, Iâll let you.â
Estelle offered the invitation like she was doing him a big favor.
Lennox almost laughed.
Heâd seen Estelle fast asleep with a book in her hand last night. She clearly dozed off while reading to Duren.
So he easily guessed her plan.
âShe probably thinks thereâs no way Iâll fall asleep before Duren.â
Obvious trick.
âAlright. Iâll join you.â
But he accepted the trick anyway.
He had just realized something:
Without Estelleâs help, he couldnât even last one minute with Duren, let alone an hour.
Quick deal made.
* * *
âYouâre getting work done quickly today.â
âIâm always fast.â
Lennox brushed off Pippinâs teasing with a smirk and stood up.
âJust one last thing to check. This message just came from the temple.â
âUgh. The temple never brings good news.â
Lennox frowned as he read the document.
âTheyâre sending a priest for pilgrimage? Isnât that a bit sudden?â
âI thought so too.â
This kind of visit didnât happen around this time of year. Not in his past life, either.
âTell them not to come.â
But as he tried to set the document aside, one name caught his eye.
âHelios Kreuzen?â
Estelleâs ex-husband.
His name was on the list of priests visiting for the pilgrimage.
Lennox stared hard at the name and gave a new order.
âTell them to come next year instead.â
He didnât want Helios and Estelle to meet.
âSo this sudden visit is about Estelle.â
Did Helios still have lingering feelings?
âOr maybe heâs come for revenge? If so, heâs patheticâin both body and mind.â
Lennox hated Helios.
In his past life, Helios was the templeâs dog who bought the mandrake.
âNo. Actually, tell them never to come. Iâm handling the monsters fine, so he can forget about visiting Winterlen.â
Pippin held back a laugh.
He could tell this was all about the madam.
âIf they insist, Iâll tell them: no priests whose names start with âHelâ are allowed.â
âYes, thatâsâwait, what?â
âOh, and the little oneâs waiting for you. Iâll handle the rest. You go ahead.â
âItâs not because of Estelle.â
âSure, sure. I understand.â
Pippin grinned as Lennox left for Durenâs room.
He had no idea he was about to face a very awkward bedtime story session.
