Episode 29
After divorcing Estelle, Helios was humiliated and labeled a failure. It was said he joined the temple afterward.
Since the divorce was less than a year ago, that meant Helios had only been a priest for a short time. Normally, he should still be a trainee, or at most a beginner priest.
But an old priest named Colin, who had served the temple for years, was watching Helios nervously.
âWith all due respect, Lord Helios, you donât need to worry about Lady Estelle anymore, do you?â
Helios turned around to face Colin. As he stood up, his tall, strong figure became more obvious.
Even though he wore a modest black priestâs robe, his impressive build, golden hair, and blue eyes stood out. His kind-looking face and gentle smile made him look pure and handsomeâespecially in such a strict outfit. Only his cold gaze gave away his true feelings.
âO-of course, I understand you might still have some bad feelings toward Lady EstelleâŠâ
They had never even spent a wedding night together, so how did the rumor about his âperformance problemâ spread? That was due to Estelle constantly claiming:
âItâs too small.â
The way to deny that kind of rumor was simple: prove it to someone else.
But Helios never tried. He accepted the divorce quietly and disappeared to the temple. People mocked him, saying he ran away and was just a pretty face with nothing insideâunlike Estelleâs other ex-husbands.
âBut ordering me to check on her regularly⊠I canât do it anymore,â Colin said, pleading.
He didnât want Helios getting involved with Estelle again. To Colin, she was like a beehiveâdangerous if disturbed.
âHer new husband is Duke Lennox. She may be alive, but I bet sheâs more miserable than she looks.â
â…â
âSomeone like you shouldnât waste time worrying about a woman like herââ
âBrother Colin.â
Helios cut him off, firmly.
âIâm going to Winterlen.â
âLord Helios!â
âIâll say itâs a pilgrimage. That wonât raise suspicion. Itâs normal for us to check areas affected by evil.â
Helios sounded gentle, but his tone left no room for disagreement.
He hadnât been listening to Colinâs warnings anyway. His mind was too full.
âWhy is Estelle acting differently this time?â
âHas she really decided to live as Lennoxâs wife?â
âIs she being mistreated by that villain Lennox?â
He had to meet Estelle to find out.
âUnderstood. Iâll make the preparations.â
Colin bowed. If Helios decided something, no one could stop him.
Everyone thought Helios had run to the temple after the divorce, but that wasnât true.
He had belonged to the temple since childhood.
He only pretended to be a noble because he was a special case:
A future pope candidate, with divine power strong enough to surpass even the current pope.
Raised in secret by the temple, a truly devout servant of Godâwho now couldnât hide his excitement.
A few days later, in Estelleâs guesthouse:
A doctor checked Estelleâs temperature and sighed in relief.
âHer fever is down. Thatâs good news.â
âIs my mom okay?â
Little Duren tugged on the doctorâs sleeve, eyes full of tears.
The doctor held back the urge to squish his cute cheeks.
âYes, sheâs fine. Donât worry, little one.â
âYay! Mommyâs okay!â
Overjoyed, Duren jumped into Estelleâs arms.
Then a sharp question cameânot from Estelle, but from Duke Lennox.
âWhat about the rest of her condition?â
The doctor, nervous under Lennoxâs cold gaze, answered:
âSheâs surprisingly healthy now. Before, she was like a walking corpseâah! Iâm sorry, my lady. Just a figure of speech.â
Estelle gave him a look, and the doctor quickly apologized.
âAll her body functions are normal now. She seems like an ordinary person again.â
âLooks like the Mandrake medicine worked,â Lennox said, nodding.
That meant he wouldnât need to threaten the Magic Towerâs master after all.
But his words shocked the doctorâand Estelle too.
âWhat did you just say?â
âThat the medicine worked well. Is there a problem?â
âYou said Mandrake medicine?!â
âOh, I didnât mention it?â
She had been too drowsy from the medicine to talk much before.
âI gave it to you on the first day you collapsed.â
âYour Grace! You shouldâve told me something that important!â
The doctor turned pale.
âThat kind of medicine can react badly with other drugs. You were lucky!â
Lennox ignored the doctorâs panic.
Instead, he listened carefully as Estelle finally found her voice.
âYou really gave that medicine to me? Why?â
Estelle looked at him in disbelief.
âTo keep the promise I made when we got married.â
He chose the word âpromiseâ instead of âcontractâ since others were listening.
âHe gave me the medicine just to fulfill our marriage contract?â
That cold man?
Estelle couldnât believe it.
Originally, she planned to get better slowly and secretly ask Pippin for the medicine.
âWait⊠was it Pippin who convinced him?â
A logical guess. Even when they fought over Durenâs living space, Lennox backed down after talking to Pippin.
âI should treat Pippin even better now.â
Unaware that Pippin had nothing to do with it, Estelle felt grateful to him anyway.
If Lennox could read her thoughts, he wouldâve been seriously annoyed.
After the doctor left, Duren snuggled into Estelleâs arms and whispered:
âMommy, you have to live a long, long time.â
âLive with me forever, okay?â
It was something his grandmother used to say.
Duren didnât know how long âforeverâ was, but he knew it meant never leaving.
Estelle paused for a moment.
ââŠOkay.â
Even though she knew she couldnât keep that promise, she nodded.
âThen letâs go for a walk!â
ââŠâ
She had forgottenâDuren needed a daily walk or he wouldnât be happy.
He looked up at her with sparkling eyes.
âI took the medicine, so I should be fine to walk⊠right?â
Estelle was about to agree whenâ
âEven if youâre better, a walk is too much right now. Iâll go with him.â
Lennox interrupted in a flat voice.
He seemed determined to keep his promise of spending time with Duren for at least an hour a day.
But Duren didnât like that idea.
âNo! I wanna go with Mommy!â
âGo away, mister!â
Somehow, Durenâs distrust of Lennox had grown.
He clung tightly to Estelle and wouldnât let go.
Lennox watched quietly, then said:
âThe boyâs staying in the guesthouse instead of the main house now. Must be because youâre here.â
âYes. Is that a problem?â
âIf heâs staying somewhere safe, itâs fine. But do you plan to keep living like this?â
ââŠâ
âYou were the one who said you’d stay in the guesthouse for a year.â
He was reminding her of her earlier wordsâwhen she said sheâd live in the guesthouse until the divorce.
Even now, she clearly didnât want to move to the main house.
So Lennox came up with an idea.
âIf you come to the main house, the child will follow. Then Iâll naturally have more chances to get closer to him.â
Estelle thought about it.
âSo come to the main houseâfor that reason, at least.â
What he said made sense⊠so why did it feel like she was falling into a trap?
WowâŠLenny.. are you using Dudu as an excuse to lure Tia in? Sly
