Episode 21
âWhat?â
âI said, if my words feel like just interference to you, then letâs get divorced. You said beforeâbreakups are always sudden.â
Only then did Lennox really look at Estelleâs face.
There was no anger, sadness, or even disappointment. Just a blank expression.
âAre you serious?â
âYes. Iâll go to Duren right now and ask him: does he want to stay with the Duke or with Grandma?â
ââŠâŠâ
âIf he chooses Grandma, then letâs get divorced.â
âI donât know how this conversation turned into that.â
âYou donât deserve to be his guardian. And I donât want a child I love to be part of your family.â
ââŠâŠâ
âOur marriage was a fakeâjust for adoption. But now Iâm against the adoption, so isnât divorce the next step?â
Estelle spoke clearly and calmly. It was obvious she wasnât acting out of emotion. She had already made up her mind.
âDid you forget the terms you set? If we divorce, you lose all the money and property.â
âSo what?â
ââŠâŠâ
âIâm not going to ruin a childâs life just to keep some money.â
Lennox wanted to argue that she was exaggerating, but he couldnât.
Estelle brushed past himâher mind made up.
He couldâve stopped her if he wanted to.
But he didnât.
He felt annoyedâlike he was being controlled by someone from Bellonsa.
âD-Duke!â
Pippinâs voice called out, and Lennox turned his head.
âWhatâŠ?â
Pippin had accidentally overheard their conversation and looked shocked.
He also seemed confused by Estelleâs actionsâgiving up everything for Duren, even though theyâd be strangers in a year.
But what Pippin said next was unexpected.
âWhat are you doing just standing there, Duke?! This is not the time to be still!â
âYouâre telling me to go get a divorce?â
âWhat?! Did someone hit you on the head?! What nonsense are you talking about?!â
Pippin got mad and sarcastic at the same time.
âNo, this is not the time for jokes! Why arenât you stopping her?!â
Me? Stop her? Why?
Lennoxâs eyes said it all, and Pippin raised his voice even more.
âIf you ask Duren to choose between you and her, the answer is obvious! Itâs not going to be you!â
ââŠâŠâ
âIf Duren leaves and then Estelle divorces you too, itâs over! Even the servants might all quit!â
âYouâre exaggerating.â
âYou think so? Iâm already thinking of quitting.â
Pippin? Quitting? Because of Estelle?
It sounded like a joke.
âItâs not a joke.â
Lennox didnât seem to take it seriously, but Pippin made himself clear.
âPippin Randell. Did you fall for her looks or something?â
He had wondered why Pippinâs reports were always full of praise for Estelle and complaints about him.
He wanted to ask since they arrived in Winterlen, but there had been no time.
âHer looks? You think thatâs all?â
âSo you did fall for her.â
âOf course. Unlike you, she treats people like people.â
âWhen have I ever treated you otherwise?â
Talking to Lennox felt like talking to a brick wall.
Even though their marriage was fake, Pippin found himself wanting to support Estelle.
âSince I started working for you, Iâve barely slept more than three hours a night.â
âI pay you extra for overtime, donât I?â
âSee? Youâre already talking about money again.â
Pippin shook his head.
âMy health got so bad that even when I had time to sleep, I couldnât. But after meeting Estelle, Iâve been sleeping more than seven hours a night.â
âWhat kind of trick did she pull?â
âA trick? Really?â
His tone grew sharp.
âShe gave me time to rest properly in the evenings.â
âI can do that too. Iâll just hire someone to share your work.â
âYou, who donât trust anyone, will hire a replacement for me?â
While Lennox was gone, Pippin had been told to watch Estelle and take care of Duren.
Watching Duren had nearly driven him crazy.
âThe biggest thing was when you were away, Estelle took care of Duren in your place.â
âIf thatâs all, thenââ
âYou didnât even do that little thing.â
Pippin gave Lennox a sharp look. His frustration was clear.
âWhen Duren was starving for days, what were you doing?â
âI told the staff to assign someone to him.â
âBut they kept failing. Every day there was a new person, and none of them helped.â
It had been a nightmare.
âTime passed, and Duren got weaker. The person who brought him here was nowhere to be seen. Do you think we could stay calm?â
âWhat wouldâve changed if I had taken care of him personally? I donât know anything about kids. Pippin, maybe blame the staffâyou were all just not good enough.â
Everyone has things theyâre good at.
If a child is hungry, you hire the best chef. If he needs to learn, you get the best tutor.
Lennox had spent plenty of money on Duren.
But Pippin shook his head.
âMoney canât replace real love. In that moment, Duren didnât need a chef or a tutorâhe needed you.â
ââŠâŠâ
âIt was an emergency.â
âThereâs no point arguing about the past. But Iâll say one thing for sureââ
âWhat?â
âHe wouldnât die just from not eating for a few days.â
To Lennox, Pippin sounded dramatic.
âHe could die!â
Pippin looked pale as he shouted.
âThat much starvation can kill someone! Even adults could die in that condition!â
âHe wonât die.â
âYou say that because youâre not normal. You and Glacia can survive months without food, but normal people die.â
Pippin rubbed his forehead.
No wonder they didnât understand each otherâthey didnât even have the same basic knowledge.
âOnly you and Glacia can survive for three months without eating.â
âThat kid isnât normal either.â
âHeâs only immune to Magiânot your biological child. We canât be sure.â
In Winterlen, some people didnât die even after months without food.
But Duren wasnât related to them by blood. And he was just a child.
âAdults think kids donât understand anything. But childhood trauma lasts forever.â
ââŠâŠâ
âAnd you donât want Duren to end up like Glacia, do you? If money and others could fix everything, Glacia wouldâve been fine a long time ago.â
â…I just left it to the experts.â
âIn parenting, no expert is better than a parent. If youâve decided to adopt him, then you need to become Durenâs expert.â
Only after Pippin explained everything clearly did Lennox finally start to understand.
Watching his boss, Pippin realized somethingâLennox was just a tall, clueless man.
He was glad Lennox finally admitted his mistakeâbut it wasnât time to relax yet.
âGo to Estelle right now and apologize with everything youâve got.â
Pippin pushed at Lennoxâs back.
âButâŠâ
âBut what? Has Estelle ever said something wrong?â
Lennox thought about it.
Come to think of it, noâshe hadnât.
âI donât get why you treat Estelle so coldly. I know itâs a contract marriage, but you speak to her worse than you would to a stranger.â
ââŠâŠâ
âDid she ever steal from you or run away?â
She was from Bellonsaâthatâs why.
That answer popped into his head first.
Sheâd never done anything wrong to him. But just because of her family name, he couldnât be kind.
It was pure prejudice.
Lennox realized heâd been narrow-minded. He shook his head.
ââŠNo.â
âThen you admit youâre in the wrong? Good. Now go to her and apologize properly.â
âDo I have to kneel?â
âIf kneeling is enough to calm her down, youâre lucky! Stop hesitating and go, now!â
Lennox Winterlen.
He gained a wife and child overnight.
And now, he was about to lose not only his familyâbut everyone around him.
It was a serious crisis.
Well surprisingly, a reasonable person
