Chapter 5
She poked his solid arm a few times and then sighed.
âIs that why I canât see his Karma score?â
Was it because an evil mageâs fate was already decided? But she could see the Karma score of Stefan, who was also an evil mage like Caron.
âItâs probably not because of the madnessâŠâ
Quietly, Jeril moved to Caronâs bedside and stared at the hazy panel above his head. Wasnât there any way to see it clearly?
âShould I just⊠wipe it? Like cleaning a window?â
Once she made up her mind, Jeril started rubbing the floating system screen with her sleeve.
From afar, it wouldâve looked ridiculousâbut she was dead serious.
âHuh?â
After some hard scrubbing, the last digit became visible. She figured if she rubbed a bit more, the first digit would appear too.
âThis actually worksâŠâ
She was dumbfounded at the absurd solution, but only for a moment. Then she bit her lip with determination.
âIâm finishing this today, no matter what.â
She adjusted her posture to start cleaning properly. Placing both hands beside Caronâs head, she pursed her lips to blow warm air on the screenâ
Thatâs when she suddenly felt a piercing gaze.
â…Are you trying to eat me alive?â
âAhh!â
Jeril fell backward. Her butt hurt, but what really stung was the look in his eyesâas if heâd caught a pervert.
âI feel insulted.â
âI wasnât doing anything like that!â
Caron clicked his tongue and sat up. Jeril grumbled inwardly.
âI was so close to seeing it!â
It felt too wasteful to stop now. After a short internal struggle, she shut her eyes tight and said,
âCan we⊠meet again next time?â
His expression cracked for a brief second. He raised an eyebrow.
âWhy?â
âThere are still places I want to show you. The capitalâs bigâyou havenât seen the market yet, and thereâs going to be a festival soonâŠâ
(And I still need to finish cleaning the top of your head.)
Caron, who of course couldnât read minds, gave her a puzzled look.
âArenât you afraid?â
âOf what?â
âYou said the Duke of Repert is terrifyingâviolent, a killer. Iâm the same. Iâm an evil mage. Iâve killed people.â
He said it as if he wanted her to be afraid. Jerilâs gaze softened slightly.
âIs he scared of being hated? Heâs more tenderhearted than he looks.â
(Of course, he wasnât thinking that at all.)
âIâm not afraid of you. You helped Stefan, saved my life, and promised to keep my secret. You donât seem like a bad person to me.â
ââŠâ
Her words made him go quiet. His eyes lingered on her face with an unreadable expression, and she coughed awkwardly.
âSo⊠will you meet me again next time?â
(So I can finish wiping your karma bar.)
ââŠFine. I will.â
As expected, Caron, who couldnât read minds, nodded slowly.
***
âThe boy you brought in will be raised as a family mage.â
It was during one of Jerilâs occasional breakfast meetings with Marquis Rubianâjust the two of them.
âDo you mean Stefan?â
âYes.â
Then came silence again. The Marquis was always like this.
âHeâs too distant to feel like a father, but too close to be a stranger.â
That distance had never changed. Jeril poked her food with her fork, thinking that the old her mightâve been hurt by it.
âWhat made you bring him here?â
Oh, so the conversation wasnât over yet. Jeril set down her napkin and smiled politely.
âHe was abandoned by his parents. I thought it would be wrong to just ignore him.â
ââŠâ
âAnd heâs an evil mage, too.â
The Marquis slowly nodded. âAbandoned childâŠâ he repeated that phrase under his breath several times.
âIâm sorry if I caused trouble.â
âNo. You did well.â
ââŠWhat?â
âYou were abandoned too.â
She already knew that, of course. She had possessed this body as an infant.
When she first opened her eyes, the first thing she saw wasnât a personâbut a snowstorm. It had been absurd.
The original âJeril Rubianâ mustâve died in the cold, and sheâd possessed her body.
But what the Marquis said next was completely unexpected.
âYour hair was already blue, and you were covered in blood.â
ââŠPardon?â
âSomeone must have tried to kill you. You barely survived because the Blue Mageâs defensive instincts kicked in.â
âSomeone tried to kill me?â
âI believe your sibling was involved.â
ââŠSibling?â
She almost spit out her juice. Wow, this day just keeps getting better.
âThere were two bundles in the box where you were found.â
âMeaningâŠâ
âYou had a twin. Only you were found. I donât know who took the other.â
So, after 24 years, she was learning the truth about her birth. But she didnât feel much emotion about it. What shocked her more was the part about someone trying to kill her.
âAre you upset I didnât tell you sooner?â
âNo. Itâs not like I suddenly feel a sibling bond or anything.â
NaturallyâJeril was a transmigrant. It wasnât her original family.
âI did sense a sinister energy from the other blanket,â the Marquis added quietly. âIt was the opposite of your aura.â
ââŠâ
âEven if youâd grown up together, you and that child could never have coexisted.â
After saying that, the Marquis calmly resumed his meal, looking relieved to have finally shared an old secret.
ââŠA sinister aura?â
***
âWhy did that idiot Emperor call me here?â
âYour Grace! This is the imperial palace! Please, watch your tongueââ
Caron ignored his panicked butler and continued cursing.
âMaybe His Majesty wants to talk about marriage? Rumor says Lady Rubian stood you upâŠâ
Caron slowly turned his head, and the butler hurriedly changed topics.
âCoughâwell, if Your Grace lost your royal title, the Emperor would probably celebrate, so heâs likely trying to stop you from marrying!â
They had already arrived at the audience chamber. The butler whispered,
âHis Majesty is being unreasonable. Honestly, you should just marry Lady Rubian already!â
Caron froze. His red eyes flickered like fire, then went cold.
âWhat did you just say?â
âUhâwell, sheâs the perfect match. Neutral faction, noble background but not too powerful, good bloodline⊠Thatâs why the marriage meeting was arranged in the first place!â
âStop talking nonsense.â
Just then, the door to the audience chamber opened.
There was no warmth between the brothers who met inside. No greetingsâjust straight to business.
âYouâre getting married,â the Emperor said.
âSo you believe in baseless rumors now? Have you finally lost what little wit you had?â
Caron stared at him. The Emperorâs face was aged. Between them lay twenty-five years of history.
The Emperor already had a crown prince nearly as old as Caron himself.
âLetâs talk about the Crown Prince instead.â
ââŠHeâs a fine young man.â
Caron chuckled humorlessly.
âThen what exactly has he been doing with the saint?â
âI donât know what youâre implying.â
âThe monster incident in Mekel provinceâyou think I wouldnât find out?â
Silence fell.
âAll the monsters there were weakâsomething even trainees could handle. Yet the entire village was wiped out.â
âEven weak monsters can still be dangerous.â
âAnd yet⊠none of the corpses showed monster attack marks.â
ââŠâ
âThen who killed those people?â
A crack formed in the Emperorâs expression. Caronâs voice lowered, his red eyes narrowing.
âI heard the victims had blue rashes on their skin. Maybe a local disease, sure. ButâŠâ
ââŠâ
âWhile the people were dying, where were the Crown Prince and the saint?â
ââŠI think we should return to discussing your marriage, Duke.â
âDonât change the subject.â
âThe Marquis of Rubianâs daughter, wasnât it?â
Caronâs expression went blank for a secondâso brief that no one noticed.
âIf youâre not interested in the throne, perhaps Iâll find her a suitable match instead.â
âSo thatâs the only reason you called me here?â
Caronâs tone was indifferent, but his hand, hidden in his pocket, was already tightening.
âThe Duke of Perschâs son would do nicely. His name was Ian, wasnât it?â
