Chapter 149Ā
āUh⦠Iā¦ā
In my head, memories of all the trouble Iād caused flashed by like a slideshow.
It made sense that the Emperor might think I was a reckless child he couldnāt control.
But from the look in his eyes, I felt he saw something more than that.
It reminded me of how Hojen looked at Noe ā as if the Emperor felt an odd sense of distance and discomfort with me.
Right now, I was hiding in Winterās shadow while causing trouble here and there, but⦠if Winter hadnāt been around, I was sure the Emperor would have suspected me a long time ago.
I swallowed hard. I thought I should come up with a more believable lie.
āI was⦠doing something very important.ā
But instead of lying, I blurted something else out.
āImportant?ā
āYes. Something very important for the Grand Duke, and something that needed me. Actually, it was something that had to be done for all of us.ā
Maybe because Iād just witnessed the conflict between the Rustin father and son, I didnāt feel like lying.
āBut I promised the Grand Duke Iād keep it secret. No⦠itās something that must be kept secret. Soā¦ā
The Emperor crossed his arms and frowned deeply.
I clenched the blanket tightly in my hands and muttered weakly,
āI canāt tell youā¦ā
The Emperor seemed a little angry. But instead of pressing me, he leaned back and closed his eyes.
ā[Igrio] told me⦠that you were ānecessary.āā
He sighed like heād realized something.
āI guess he meant it literally ā that you were needed for some āmissionā given by God, something we canāt understand.ā
I nodded quietly.
āNo matter what, you canāt tell me what happened?ā
āā¦ā
āWhat kind of situation needs a child like you? I canāt understand it, and honestly⦠I donāt want to.ā
I nodded again and added softly,
āThe Grand Duke⦠is also young.ā
āā¦What?ā
āHeās only fifteen. Just like Iām only tenā¦ā
The Emperorās slight smirk faded, and he sighed.
āSo⦠he lied about wanting you. He made you lie too, just so youād marry him.ā
He muttered, looking like the puzzle finally made sense to him.
āSo he plans to use you and then throw you away? Youāre following him so willingly⦠He mustāve bewitched you with that face of his. This is why northern men canāt be trusted ā especially snake-like onesā¦ā
Muttering angrily, the Emperor suddenly grabbed my shoulders and turned me toward him.
āLook me straight in the eye and answer me. And donāt lie.ā
I gulped and nodded. The Emperor then asked slowly, like talking to a baby:
āDo you really like Grand Duke Winter Orsches? Like⦠āIāll die without himā or āI canāt sleep without himā like?ā
Seriouslyā¦
āNoā¦ā
Or⦠thatās what I was going to say. But suddenly, I thought:
If Winter wasnāt around, would I die?
āNot feel like dying⦠Iād actually die.ā
I couldnāt even imagine the world without him ā because he was the main character of this world.
So yeah, I guess I couldnāt do without him. Maybe I won’t be able to sleep either.
I was lost in thought when the Emperor frowned and pressed me again.
āWhy are you hesitating?ā
If I said ānoā here, wouldnāt he start accusing Winter of forcing me into marriage?
Then he might say, āHeās using you ā thereās no need to marry him!ā and get mad.
And if I told him I was marrying Winter to help pay off our empireās debt⦠heād just get angrier.
Ugh⦠so annoying.
I suddenly thought, Well, Iāve already embarrassed myself once. Doing it a second time will be easier.
āā¦Uh⦠yes.ā
āā¦What did you just say?ā
Forget it.
I avoided his wide eyes and mumbled while looking elsewhere:
āWell⦠heās handsome, isnāt he? The Grand Duke Winter Orsches. Extremely handsome⦠He says heāll buy me whatever I want⦠He even lets me ride on his back when he flies⦠Plus, heās a dragon, so heās super strong, right? I mean, is there really any reason not to like him?ā
The Emperor twitched like a broken machine, then his face slowly twisted in disbelief.
I quickly waved my hands.
āDonāt worry. Iāve already gotten plenty from him. So even if someday he says Iām useless and calls off the engagement, I wonāt lose anything! And if we do break up, Iāll make sure to take a huge emotional damage fee from him.ā
The Emperor rubbed his face and muttered,
āI have no idea what kind of conversation this even is⦠Talking to you feels likeā¦ā
He trailed off, then sighed.
āā¦like all my worries are pointless and light as a feather.ā
I shrugged.
āEverything will be fine. I donāt exactly look like someone whoād get scammed, right?ā
The Emperor chuckled and patted my head roughly before standing up.
āOf course, that doesnāt mean Iām letting you off. Iāll need to talk with [Igrio]. And youāre grounded ā no going out. Youāll also be moving to the main palace so I can keep an eye on you.ā
I wanted to protest, but since I had caused trouble, I just nodded⦠until I remembered something important. I quickly clung to his waist.
āBut⦠I really want to apologize to the Duchess in person. Can you please let me visit her, just this once?ā
The Emperor narrowed his eyes.
āIāll think about it. But for now, youāre grounded. This is the consequence of your own choices.ā
Feeling guilty toward the Duchess, I thought maybe I should at least write her a letter.
āWhile youāre grounded, you should work on the palace garden.ā
Garden?
The Emperor cleared his throat and whispered,
āI donāt think youāre the only one tending it. The others seem to be waiting for you, so youād better go.ā
When he left, I hurried down to the garden. I remembered how much effort Iād put into pulling out all the weeds beforeā¦
āIt better not be full of weeds againā¦ā
I bit my lip and ran ā but what I saw was different from what Iād imagined.
āIzana!ā
The garden wasnāt empty.
āOscar?ā
When Oscar called my name, two other heads turned ā Boris and Joseph.
Oscar ran toward me, his hair bouncing, but stopped just in front of me.
āWhat happened to you?!ā he demanded.
He looked pale, spinning me around to check me over.
āI heard you were coming to my house, but then you vanished! You said youād be back in two days, but you disappeared for five!ā
āIām really sorry, Oscar. I wanted to apologize to the Duchess in person, but⦠Iām grounded for a while.ā
Oscar rubbed his forehead and groaned.
āWell⦠at least youāre safe. Mom and I were so worried something happened to youā¦ā
āWhere did you go, Izana?ā
Joseph slipped in between us with his usual sly smile.
āWhen you didnāt come back after two days, we all gathered in the garden to talk about you.ā
āNobody worried! Joseph, stop making things up!ā
Boris, whoād been lounging nearby, sat up with a scowl.
āI⦠went to the dragonās lair the Grand Duke gave me. Oscar, can you deliver a letter to the Duchess for me later?ā
āOf course, thatās easy.ā
āThatās really all?ā
Joseph looked at me suspiciously. I forced a smile and nodded.
āOf course.ā
Then, to change the subject, I pointed at his face. Joseph had a blue bruise on his left cheek.
āWhat happened to your face?ā
Joseph touched the bruise and winced.
āOh, thatā¦ā
āI punched him ā like I promised,ā Oscar said.
Joseph nodded.
āLucky or unlucky, Borisās punch hurt more.ā
From a distance, Boris clicked his tongue and stood up. He grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward a corner of the garden.
āBecause you were gone so long, weeds started growing again! We couldnāt pull them all out ourselves, so we left a patch for you. Go on, pull them!ā
I followed him ā and burst out laughing when I saw the patch of fresh green weeds left perfectly in the middle of the neat garden.
āWhatāwhy are you laughing?!ā Boris shouted, flustered.
But soon, Oscar and Joseph also started laughing, and Boris only got angrier.
āDonāt laugh! I said, donāt laugh!ā
