Chapter 97

First fight with Bania
It was the first time Ryan had ever fought with Bania.
He was lying on his bed, pouting, mumbling to himself.
ââŠYouâre not going to apologize?â
âWhat are you talking about?!â
Rivan carefully came into the room and spoke, making Ryan sit up.
âWhy would I apologize when I didnât do anything wrong?â
âAhâsorry, wrong word. Not apologize⊠I mean, are you not going to make up with her?â
âWhatâs the bunny doing?â
âI think Alex went to comfort her. Theyâre talking right now.â
ââŠâ
âRemember, big brotherâyou said youâd always assume thereâs a good reason for whatever Bania does.â
âYeah, but I really canât accept it this time. Listen.â
Ryan remembered Bania shouting when she saw Alex holding a wooden sword.
She had panicked just from the sight of Alex holding it.
From their argument, it seemed like Bania wanted Alex to grow up without ever smelling blood in his life.
âIn the previous timeline, Alex died.â
âWhat?!â
Rivanâs jaw dropped.
âBunny told me all sorts of things, but she barely talked about Alex. Isnât that strange for someone she cares about so much?â
âMaybe⊠she didnât have anything to say?â
âExactly. Either it was too painful to talk about⊠or in the last life, Alex wasnât with her and didnât survive.â
âHmm⊠I bet your crazy father kicked him out for being powerless.â
âRight. And from the way Bania clings to Alex now, I doubt he just âkicked him out nicely.ââ
Ryan frowned, remembering how Bania shook in fear.
âShe started trembling just from seeing Alex hold a wooden sword, right? Then itâs obvious. In the previous life, maybe their father made him hold a real sword and⊠got him killed.â
ââŠWhatâs wrong with your dad?â
âWhy are you acting surprised?â
âAnyway! If youâve figured that out, then just go along with Baniaâs wishes. If Alexâs death is her trauma, then just keep him away from swords.â
âBut knowing that actually makes me understand her less.â
âWhy?!â
âSure, sheâs happy to see her dead brother alive again and wants him to live happily this time. I get that. But is controlling his life like this the right way?â
ââŠâ
âBania remembers everything, but Alex remembers nothing. She might be protecting him out of kindness, but if she shows it so openly, how confused will he feel?â
ââŠThatâs trueâŠâ
âAlex has his own life. He should choose what he wants to do. He needs to face challenges, get hurt, and cry sometimesâthatâs how you grow up.â
Ryan understood her feelings but couldnât agree with her methods.
âKnowing the future doesnât give you the right to wrap someone in cotton forever. Thatâs not raising a childâitâs playing with a doll.â
ââŠYeah, you have a pointâŠâ
Just then, there was a small knock.
Alex came in.
âUm⊠Dad, I have something to sayâŠâ
âOh! Yeah!â
Ryan quickly got up.

Climbing the back mountain
Ryan and Alex were climbing the back mountainâwithout telling Bania.
ââŠSo, my sister says I can do whatever I want, as long as I donât touch a sword.â
âIf you want to, you can hold one. What do you really want?â
âWell⊠earlier she showed me an academy application form.â
Alexâs cheeks turned red, and Ryan smiled when he saw his interest.
âIâve always wanted to go somewhere with lots of friends. But the academy is expensiveâŠâ
âWhy are you worrying about that?â
âBecause you work so hard to earn moneyâfighting monsters and allâŠâ
ââŠRight.â
(âLetâs not tell Alex Iâm actually scamming Duke Basenberg by selling magic stones. Thatâs not good for education.â)
âYou donât need to worry. I can easily support you.â
âThank you⊠But I still feel like I should do something useful for the family.â
Alex sighed.
âIf I became a knight like you or Kali, I could make money. Thatâs more useful than just studying.â
ââŠWhat the hell? Why is a twelve-year-old talking about being âusefulâ?â
Ryan realized instantlyâthis came from what their father had said.
âWhat did Duke Basenberg say to you when he kicked you out?â
âUhâno, nothingâŠâ
His reaction said it all.
Ryan remembered his own childhoodâbeing told he was useless every time his powers didnât appear.
âAlex.â
Ryan stopped, turned him around, and grabbed his shoulders.
âWhatever he said, erase it from your head. That manâs words are garbageâworthless.â
ââŠâ
âYou have a sister who loves you and me to protect you now. Donât think of him as family, and donât let his words stick with you.â
Ryan patted his head with a gentle smile.
âYouâre still a kid. You donât have to achieve anything yet. You donât need to prove youâre useful or earn money. Just try anything you want and find your talent. Grow up strong.â
ââŠAh.â
Alexâs eyes filled with tears, then he smiled brightly.
ââŠYes!â
âGood! Then are you ready?â
âYes!â
Alex wiped his eyes, grabbed⊠the wooden sword!
(The one Bania threw awayâhe picked it up and brought it here in secret.)
âMy sisterâs too overprotective. Iâm taller and bigger than her now.â
âExactly! People will think youâre made of glass at this rate.â
âIâm a man, so I should at least know how to protect myself.â
âThatâs the spirit!â
Ryan figured they might as well practice since they had the sword.
âHi-yah!â
ââŠYeah, no talent.â
Just one swing, and Ryan could tell Alex had zero sword talent. His stance, balanceâeverything was a mess.
Ryan sighed.
(âSo thatâs why Bania didnât want him touching a sword⊠she knew.â)
Still, Alex grinned.
âAm I⊠good at it?â
âLetâs focus on the academy.â
âHuh?!â
âThese days, scholars are the trend. You can hire fighters instead of being one.â
Alex realized his skills had been judged and looked disappointedâbut quickly perked up.
âIâll at least build some stamina!â
âAlright! When you swing, keep your legs and waist stillâonly move the swordâŠâ
The lesson began.

The bear
âAlright, swing againâwhoa?â
âWhoaa?â
They both froze.
Why?
Because a bear was staring right at them from a distance.
A huge, male bear. Just out of hibernationâhungry.
âWhaâAAAH!â
Alex tripped and fell in panic. Ryan stayed focused on the bear.
Weapon: wooden sword.
(= basically nothing.)
Option 1: Fight barehanded â X
Option 2: Use his ability â O
But⊠Bania had asked him not to reveal his powers to Alex yet, to avoid hurting his feelings.
Ryan gritted his teeth. This was bad.
The bear charged.
He had no choiceâhe was going to use his upgraded power: Instant Death, Stage 2.
Now it could kill anything within 10 meters instantly.
He stepped forward, making sure Alex was behind him.
âDad!â
The bear dropped dead mid-charge.
Ryan pretended to be surprised, poking the bear.
âItâs dead?! Must be a heart attack. You know, animals just out of hibernation canât handle sudden warm weatherâŠâ
He said whatever came to mind.
âPhew, that was close, right?â
Alex just stared at him.
Ryan prayed silently:
(âPlease⊠donât notice. Please be a normal kidâŠâ)
Alex asked quietly:
ââŠAre you⊠an able user?â
Ryan closed his eyes.
(ââŠCrap.â)
