~Chapter 98~
Evangeline had an excuseâ
This wasnât just anywhere, it was her duchy.
She was the only daughter of the ducal house, and Laritte was her close friend whose identity she could vouch for.
Who would have imagined theyâd be harassed for identification here of all places?
Just thenâ
âIf itâs identification you want, here it is.â
A cold voice rang out.
Laritte pulled an identification badge from her coat and handed it to the vigilantes.
They took it awkwardly, looking displeased, and examined it.
âBarony of Ansy?â
âWhereâs that?â
âNever heard of it.â
These were men who had lived their whole lives in the countryside.
There was no way theyâd know every noble family in the Empire.
And so, things only got more tangled.
âIs this badge⊠real?â
âIt could be forged.â
Suspicion filled their eyes.
In truth, they werenât completely without reason.
Not all nobles were equalâthere were landholding nobles and those who only had titles without any fief.
That alone created a difference in standing.
And among the common people, fake identification badges werenât unheard of.
After all, there was a big difference in rights between nobles and commoners.
If caught by the security force, it brought heavy punishment.
Still, some people carried fake badges, unable to give up the sweet benefits they offered.
The vigilantes assumed Laritte was one of those peopleâ
One of those vain, foolish women who fancied herself a noble lady.
One of the young men glared sharply and roughly grabbed Laritteâs wrist.
âStop talking and come with us!â
âLet go of me!â
Laritte tried to shake him off, but his grip was like iron.
âL-Lari!â
A flustered Evangeline raised her voice.
And in that momentâ
Tak!
A long, elegant hand gripped the young manâs wrist.
At the same time, a cold voice rang out.
âWhat exactly do you think youâre doing?â
A man with an expressionless face looked down at the vigilante who had been threatening Laritte.
He was beautiful enough to make not only women but even men turn their heads.
Facing that fine, marble-carved face, the young man frowned in irritation.
âWhat the hell is this pale-faced pretty boy?!â
A man ought to look like a man!
Still, he felt a twinge of tensionâ
For a man to have such refined features meant he was rich enough to never work outdoors.
âStill⊠probably just a low-ranking noble.â
High-ranking lords wouldnât be wandering around in this backwater.
In all his life, the highest-status person heâd met was a minor official from the ducal capital.
And that badge the girl showed earlier? Just from some unheard-of barony.
But strangelyâ
âWhat is this?â
His whole body stiffened like a mouse before a predator.
He clenched his teeth.
âAnd who the hell are you?!â
Annoyed at his own shrinking back, he barked louder.
âMe?â
The manâDietrichâjerked his chin toward the frozen Evangeline.
âIâm her brother.â
Evangeline swallowed hard.
âŠHer brother looked very on edge.
Normally, Dietrich wouldnât provoke someone so openly by speaking down like that.
He preferred to handle things quietly.
âSo, who exactly are youâthreatening my sister and her friend, telling them to âcome with youâ?â
His grip on the manâs wrist tightened.
The vigilante tried to shake him off, but the hold only grew stronger.
The pain shot up like his wrist might snap.
âGhhkâŠ!â
His face turned red, then blue, then pale.
âL-Let go!â
He flailed, and Dietrichâs lips curved slightly.
âLet go?â
âM-My wristâs going to break!â
The young man writhed in pain, foam at the corners of his mouth.
But Dietrich didnât seem about to release him.
âWhen Lady Ansy asked you to let her goââ
Dietrich tilted his head slightly, the gesture dripping with mockery.
ââŠDid you?â
At this point, the other young men watching couldnât stay still.
âAlright, thatâs it! Let Peter go, now!â
One of them lunged, swinging a fist.
Thud!
But instead of being hit, Dietrich twisted, and the manâs jaw snapped to the sideâ
Because Dietrich had yanked the first vigilante forward and used him as a shield.
It was lightning-fast reflexes.
Then he shoved the man forward.
âUrk!â
âUgh!â
The charging men toppled over like dominos.
âYou bastardâŠ!â
One man tried to get up, only to be mercilessly kicked in the stomach and sent rolling again.
âUghâŠâ
âGrhhâŠâ
The groans of pain filled the air.
The vigilantes writhed on the ground like insects.
Dietrich looked down on them like trash, pulled a small square badge from his coat, and tossed it onto them.
âThe badge you were so eager to see.â
His voice dripped with contempt.
âGo aheadâcheck it.â
One man snatched it up with trembling hands, then his eyes bulged.
âWhaâ? Wh-What?!â
âWhat is it?â
âThis⊠this isâŠ!â
He couldnât even finish his sentence, shoulders shaking violently.
The golden badge bore the Claudius name and the family crestâ
A sword and a rose.
The symbol of Claudius.
âMy land. My people.â
A voice like ice dropped over their frozen heads.
âAnd you dare threaten my sister and my guest?â
My land? My sister?
âŠWas this man reallyâ
The Duke of Claudius?!
Cold sweat ran down their backs.
âS-Sorry!â
âWe were wrong!â
âPlease, mercy, just this onceâŠ!â
They begged, crying and sniffling.
Dietrichâs gaze was as cold as a winter gale, sharp enough to kill.
But thenâ
âYour Grace.â
A soft voice called him.
In an instant, the killing intent in his blue eyes vanished.
Dietrich closed his eyes, opened them again, and turned.
ââŠAre you alright?â
âYes, thanks to your concern.â
Laritte quickly nodded.
Her face was pale from the scare, but she didnât seem hurt.
Dietrich let out a sigh of relief, then turned sharply to Evangeline.
âEva, you?â
âUh, y-yeah? I-Iâm fine too.â
âGood. Iâm glad⊠butââ
His face twisted dangerously.
âYou went around without your guards? Are you insane?!â
The roar shook her eardrums.
âWhat if something had happened?!â
Evangeline felt wrongedâ
This had all been for the sake of pushing him and Laritte together!
But she knew better than to blurt, It was for you!
âIâm sorryyyyâŠâ
She shrank down.
Dietrich glared at his troublemaking sister for a moment, then shook his head.
âLetâs get back to the villa.â
he is so angry for his beloved hehehe
As expected
Well, suspension bridge theory was still put into practice though đ
Dietrich, you saved your fiance! good job~
Eva is adorably stupid sometimes
Those guys need a harsher punishment, they were probably going around, harrasing people.
Hey.. Eva did it for you
This is really good, but the constant switching of Laritte’s family’s title is low key annoying. A baron isn’t a marquis or a viscount. They’re all different ranks and baron is the lowest so I don’t think that’s right to use for her family at all especially since it’s the same rank as Seraphina’s family
Title/land title
Baron/Baroness/Barony
Viscount/Viscountess/Viscountry
Count or Earl/Countess/Countdom or Earldom (a count is used in Europe but in England it’s an Earl but they’re the same thing.)
Marquis/Marquise/Marquisate
Duke/Duchess/Dukedom
