Episode 57
Estelle stood up.
âI think I should go check on something.â
âYou donât need to worry so much,â someone said.
âDuren is the youngest. I just want to make sure heâs playing well. Iâll be right back.â
âHow devoted,â Mrs. Alt muttered sarcastically.
âYes? Heâs my son, so of course I care,â Estelle replied as if it were obvious, then ran to the garden.
From a distance, she saw the children gathered together. But Duren wasnât there.
âKids, whereâs Duren?â
Surprised to see her, the children explained they were playing hide-and-seek.
âOnly Dudu hasnât been found yet!â
âYeah! Heâs so good at hiding and finding us!â
âDudu is smart!â
âDudu is cute!â
Estelle smiled softly and waited until they were done praising him.
âCan I help you find him too?â
âYes, Your Majesty!â
Their bright eyes sparkled up at her, and she froze for a second under all that pure attention.
âUh⊠okay, Iâll find him,â she said.
âYour Majesty!â they corrected, refusing to call her âauntie.â Estelle chuckled and walked farther into the garden.
Kids often think theyâre invisible if they just hide their faces under a blanket. So their hiding spots werenât perfect.
Heâs probably here.
Just as she expected, she found Duren behind a tree.
âDuren!â
âMom! Uhââ
But he wasnât alone.
âCount, let go of Duren!â Estelle shouted, alarmed.
Duren had a lollipop in one hand and was being held by Count Bellonsa with the other.
He tried to run to Estelle but the count yanked his arm hard, making him cry out.
Huh? Why wonât he let go of me?
It hurt, but Duren didnât cryâhe didnât understand what was happening and just looked around with wide eyes. He didnât seem to think the count would harm him.
Estelleâs face went pale.
âIf you agree to talk to me, Iâll let him go,â the count said.
âIâll do it. Just donât touch the child,â Estelle replied.
âYou make it sound like Iâm some villain,â the count smirked.
Estelle bit her lip. Using a child as a hostage to force a conversationâhow cowardly.
âWe can talk after you let him go. I wonât scream or run,â she said.
âCome closer, and Iâll believe you.â
She stepped closer and quickly pulled Duren into her arms.
Sensing the tension, Duren tilted his head but then happily announced,
âSheâs my mom! She said weâre family! She gave me candy too!â
âThatâs nice, Duren. Why donât you go play with your friends? Theyâre still looking for you,â Estelle said.
âWhat about you?â
âIâll come soon. I just need to talk to the grown-ups.â
âOkay!â
Without any suspicion, Duren ran off.
As soon as he was gone, Estelle glared coldly at the count. His friendly smile from earlier vanished instantly.
âDo you know what happened to Mathiasâs hand?â he asked.
âI heard he was injured.â
âInjured? No! He canât use it at all now! My only brother is crippled, and you speak like itâs nothing!â
âDidnât he tell you why?â
ââŠâ
âHe tried to hit me with a bottle. A bottle bigger than my palm.â
The count looked shockedâclearly Mathias had told him only part of the story.
Now he knows he canât just blame me blindly, Estelle thought.
âThere must have been a reason he acted like that,â the count said. âIf you had just replied to his letters, he wouldnât have come looking for you.â
âSo youâre saying itâs my fault?â
âStop dodging blame. Mathias lost his hand. And you? Youâre fine.â
Estelle laughed bitterly. She had forgotten for a moment what kind of man this wasâshameless.
âHow did you even get in here? If Mrs. Alt finds out, sheâll throw you out.â
âI got her permission. Anyway, Iâve decidedâthis isnât right.â
âWhat isnât?â
âYou should divorce now. Winterlen is dangerous. This marriage shouldnât have happened.â
âAnd my previous marriage was fine to you?â
âThat was resolved, wasnât it? Donât bring up the past!â
âSorry, but I canât divorce,â Estelle said.
âWhat? Why not?â
âBecause if I divorce or die, all my property goes to the duke. Thatâs in the contract.â
âThat wasnât in the original!â
âThe duke added it after we married. I agreed because Iâm not planning to die.â
âYou wonât die from magic, true. And he canât kill you eitherâŠâ
The count looked nervous. He couldnât force a divorce or kill the duke. That left only one option.
He stared at Estelle.
âIf you keep ignoring important matters or my letters, Iâll tell the temple you can use magicâand that you killed your ex-husbands with it.â
âThat would hurt you too. You know I never wanted to marry you.â
âWeâll just say we found out too late about your powers.â
âYou think this threat will work?â
âYouâre being uncooperative, so I have to say it!â he shouted. âWe have nothing to lose, Estelle!â
It was a direct threatâfirst using Duren as a hostage, now this.
Estelle was sick of it. Without thinking, her true feelings slipped out.
âIf you needed money so badly, why didnât you marry off Vera from the start? Or even sell Mathias?â
SLAP!
Before she could finish, he slapped her.
âWatch your mouth. Do you think youâre the same as my children?â
âRight. Mathias and Vera are your real childrenâŠâ
Her cheek burned, and she tasted blood. But her mind was suddenly calm.
âAnd Iâm just an outsider.â
âThatâs right.â
If she was just a stranger, why should she endure this? She could easily kill him right here.
Magic began to rise from the ground. The count said something, but she barely heard it.
If heâs dead, itâll be quietâŠ
âEstelle.â
That voice snapped her back. She turned and saw Lennox.
Why is he here?
The magic faded instantly. The count was shocked too.
âD-Duke Winterlen? What are you doing here?â
Both of them were tenseâLennox might have heard something he shouldnât.
âI thought you were watching the children play,â Lennox said to Estelle.
âYesâŠâ
âThis doesnât match what I heard. And it doesnât look like a planned meeting.â
âIâI just had something urgent to tell my daughter,â the count stammered.
âSo you want me to pretend I didnât see this?â
âNo, I just mean thereâs no need to worryââ
Lennox looked unimpressed. The count began to hope maybe he hadnât heard everything.
But then Lennox said,
âThat wonât work. I already promised to act as I please.â
He stepped forward, grabbed the countâs handâ
and broke it.
