Episode 33
âWait, Iâm not using this room alone?â
âThey said since I already kicked you out to the annex once, people might gossip if we also sleep in separate rooms. So weâre supposed to share this one. Didnât you hear?â
âNo, not at all.â
Apparently, the servant forgot to explain it to her.
âI really didnât know.â
Estelle muttered and clutched the front of her bathrobe tightly.
It wasnât much different from their wedding night, but she was more nervous nowâprobably because things had changed.
âHe held my hand… and my waist… What if he touches somewhere else next?â
She thought about the other wedding nights sheâd had with her previous husbands.
She had begged so many times.
[Please, letâs just talk!]
But begging never worked.
Hot breaths like a wild beast that had forgotten how to speakâŠ
Mushroom-spotted hands grabbing her to overpower herâŠ
Her mind went completely blank.
âSorry.â
Lennox turned around.
âIâll be outside. Let me know when youâve changed.â
Even after Lennox left, Estelle stared at the closed door for a moment, then slowly changed into her nightgown.
Her hands were trembling slightly.
âYou can come in now.â
Still shaking, she hid her hands behind her back. Lennox walked in slowly.
He glanced at her outfit, then continued the conversation.
âItâs too late to change rooms now. So sleep on the bed tonight. Iâll take the sofa.â
âLike our wedding night?â
âYes. Like that.â
Estelle thought for a second before asking,
âIs it because you think Iâm dirty?â
âNo. I donât sleep well anywhere, so it doesnât matter where I lie down.â
âIf thatâs the case, letâs both sleep in the bed.â
She spoke firmly.
If Lennox had looked at her with even a hint of lust or bad intentions, she wouldnât have suggested this.
But his attitude was clear and respectful, and that made her feel safer.
âTechnically, this is his room after all.â
Her hands no longer trembled.
âIf weâre both going to sleep badly anyway, we might as well be comfortable.â
âEstelleâŠâ
âThe bed is big. Even if you move in your sleep, we wonât touch each other.â
Lennox raised one eyebrow, clearly not thrilled with the idea.
âIf you sleep on the sofa, Iâll feel bad. I might lose sleep over it.â
âSo this is for your own good?â
âYes.â
Lennox finally seemed to consider it.
Estelle then went all in.
âIf you wonât sleep in the bed, Iâll leave this room right now.â
Lennox hesitated, then nodded.
âIâll turn off the light. Lie down first.â
Thankfully, it worked.
Estelle lay down and closed her eyes.
The lights went out, and she felt Lennox lie down beside her.
She instinctively turned to face away from him.
He did the same.
They lay with their backs to each other.
âOh, by the way⊠Iâd like to use some of my dowry money. Is that okay?â
She asked quietly, breaking the awkward silence.
When they married, all her personal property became part of her dowry.
She didnât think Lennox would claim it as his, but she still felt she should ask.
âYou already have a separate allowance from the estate. Why use your dowry?â
âI was given another allowance besides the contract money?â
âOf course. It’s our duty to provide for your dignity.â
His voice was flat, but she felt relieved.
Until now, everyone had tried to take her money.
âAsk Pippin for the details.â
âOkay.â
That ended the conversation.
But she couldnât stop thinking about the way he had held her waist. Her face grew hot.
âItâs probably just me thinking about it.â
Estelle pulled the blanket up.
Then Lennox spoke again.
âIf sleeping here is uncomfortable, we can use separate rooms starting tomorrow. The room next door is fine.â
Being conscious of someone wasnât always a bad thing.
But Estelle knew her place well.
As a contract wife, she gave the only proper answer.
ââŠOkay.â
Next Day
Lennox woke up.
âI must have been the only one who felt awkward.â
He hadnât had a nightmare, and he felt well-rested.
âStrangeâŠâ
Everything felt odd.
He had never shared a bed with anyone before, so he thought he wouldnât sleep a wink.
But with her peaceful breathing beside him, he had slept deeply.
âEvery time sheâs nearby⊠I sleep well.â
Why?
Even in the office, he couldnât focus on his papers.
He turned to look out the windowâand saw Estelle.
âDuren, no!â
âEek! Baby, donât eat that!â
Duren had picked up a bug during their walk and was about to put it in his mouth. Estelle and the maid screamed.
Heh.
Lennox couldnât help but laugh. He set down his pen and rested his chin on his hand, watching her.
âShe really is keeping her distance from the child.â
Estelle had naturally handed the baby over to the maid and kept her distance.
Lennoxâs eyes followed her quietly.
âDukeâŠâ
Pippin entered the room but froze when he saw Lennox.
âHe didnât even notice me⊠Whatâs he staring at?â
Pippin peeked and nearly laughed.
âBeautiful day, isnât it?â
ââŠIt is.â
When Pippin opened the window, Lennox looked slightly embarrassed and pretended to read.
But his eyes kept drifting outside.
After a while, Estelle was gone, but he still looked out the window.
Then suddenlyâ
ââŠ!â
Lennox stood up.
âIs something wrong with Lady Estelle?!â
Pippin rushed over in panic.
âPippin. I told you to make sure no priests visited the estate. Did you pass on the message?â
âUm, yes?â
Then Pippin realized something.
âOh! Lady Estelle called a merchant to buy some jewels. He mustâve just arrived.â
âWhat are you talking about? Those were priests.â
âBut⊠they were dressed like merchantsâŠâ
Before Pippin could finish, Lennox rushed past him.
One of them was definitely a priest.
He recognized his face clearlyâhe had seen that priest sucking up to Helios in his past life.
âWhere are you going?â
âTo Estelle.â
âHuh?â
The Winterlen family had always had a bad relationship with the temple.
Now a priest had snuck into the estate in disguise?
Lennox couldnât let that slide.
âIâm going to my wife.â
This wasnât about Estelle.
It was about protecting Winterlen.
Estelle, unaware, had gone inside to meet the merchants.
The room sparkled with jewels. Estelleâs eyes sparkled too.
âAll of this is my secret fund.â
Currently, none of Estelleâs money was truly hers.
âWhile Iâm married, it belongs to my husband. If we divorce, itâll go back to the Bellonsa family.â
So she needed to set some aside, just in case.
Step one: convert invisible money into visible assets.
Jewels were perfectâbeautiful, useful, and easy to obtain.
Even the allowance Lennox gave her?
Her money.
The contract fee?
Also hers.
And even the money the Bellonsa family tried to use as if it were theirs?
Still hers.
âMy lady, about this jewelâŠâ
SLAM!
âEstelle!â
Lennox burst in.
âAre you okay?â
âHuh? Ohâyes, of course.â
Confused, Estelle watched as Lennox walked over and whispered,
âOne of those âmerchantsâ is a priest.â
âA priest?â
He nodded.
Lennox quickly scanned the room.
âHeâs not here now.â
âCould it be a mistake?â
âNo. Iâm sure.â
With his sharp eyesight, he couldnât be wrongâespecially about someone he despised.
âLooks like some of them split off. Iâll go check. Donât worry about it.â
With a dangerous look in his eyes, Lennox left.
âA priest, huhâŠâ
Estelle didnât like priests either.
âWait here,â she told the merchants and stepped outside.
âHeâs already gone.â
She walked aimlessly, then suddenly stopped.
There was a small child.
And in front of himâŠ
[âIf youâre good-looking, you should just get married early and have kids. That woman is smart for doing so.â]
It was the priest she had seen on her wedding day, standing next to Helios.
