Episode 42Â
I looked around the study slowly. It felt completely different with and without Frederic in it. When he was here, the room felt cozy. But now⊠it just felt kind of empty.
I suddenly remembered the first time I stepped into this room. Back then, it felt so awkward and unfamiliarâbut now, it felt completely comfortable.
âSo much so that I could stay here for weeks.â
And it was true. Ever since I left the Flerin mansion and came to the Peredy estate, I hadnât gone out even once. I didnât have anyone to meet, and honestly, I just wanted to rest.
âIâve really become a shut-in. Worse than Frederic. At least he, Bella, and the butler are here, so I have someone to talk to.â
I walked over to Fredericâs desk. I was planning to just grab a random book, sit on the couch, and read while waiting for him.
Thatâs when I noticed a familiar symbol on the desk.
âCharlier.â
It was the seal of Charlierâs family. The wax-sealed envelope was already wide open.
Frederic.
Come see me now.
Come to the Salon de Pieque.
We need to talk.
âCharlier
The letter was just lying there, wide open.
âSeriously, she writes letters like theyâre text messages. Sheâll never change that habit.â
I walked up and picked it up.
The handwriting was rushed and messy, clearly written in a hurry. I could imagine how urgently Frederic mustâve leftâhe didnât even bother hiding the letter.
âHe probably smiled like an idiot the moment he saw it. Bet he ran out right away.â
I couldnât help but feel a little hurt. Why didnât he say anything to me?
âCreak.
The study door opened. It was Frederic.
It was too late to put the letter back and pretend I hadnât read it.
ââŠâŠâ
âWhat are you doing?â
âWhat do you think? I came here to work. One hour of talking, remember? But you were gone, and this letter was just lying here.â
âYou read it?â
âYup. Did you just get back? You went to see Charlier, didnât you?â
âYeah.â
For some reason, Frederic seemed to avoid eye contact.
I felt even more upset.
âReally? Is this how itâs gonna be now?â
âHey, seriously. Thatâs kinda cold.â
Frederic looked away slightly.
âAha, I knew it. Heâs totally avoiding my eyes. Wow. So unfair.â
âYouâre unbelievable. Is this because things are going well with Charlier now?â
ââŠâŠâ
He still didnât say anything. Still avoiding my eyes.
âCome on, be honest. Whyâd you hide Charlierâs letter from me?â
Once again, he looked away.
âThis guy⊠really.â
âWaitâare you doing this just so you donât have to pay me 1,000 lukes?â
ââŠ?â
Frederic frowned, looking like he couldnât believe what he just heard.
âWhatâŠ?â
âI mean, are you hiding this letter to save money?â
âHa⊠wow⊠money demon.â
He leaned against the desk and ran a hand through his hair.
âUnbelievable.â
He let out a breathless chuckle and looked at me from the side.
âUgh. Just because youâre handsome doesnât make this okay.â
For a second, I felt my heart flutter.
âSeriously, this is cheating. That sunlight coming in at an angle⊠the side profile⊠even his curly hair looks perfect.â
I shook my head quickly to snap out of it.
âFocus. This is about my 1,000 lukes! Iâve got no money and nowhere to go, remember?â
I spoke with determination.
âFrederic. Are you seriously trying to save money by cutting my pay?â
He pushed off the desk and stepped closer. Now there was only a handâs width between us.
I tilted my head up to look at him. He was tallâmy neck actually hurt from looking up.
His expression was hard to read. Was he annoyed? Curious? Just tired?
âHey.â
He leaned in a little.
âWait, that smellâŠâ
It was the same scent I smelled in the carriage on the way to the Forest of Spirits. It had this strangely nostalgic feeling.
He leaned in even more.
âWhy is he so close all of a sudden?â
Then he spoke.
âHey. Do you really like money that much?â
âYup. Of course.â
âAnd your brain? Is it good?â
âMy brain? What are you talking about?â
He stared straight into my eyes, so close I could feel his breath.
âThen learn to invest in trade ships.â
ââŠWhat?â
I instinctively stepped back.
âTrade ship investment? Why are you saying that up close like itâs a secret mission or something?â
Only then did Frederic seem to realize how close heâd gotten. He flinched slightly and stepped back.
âI mean⊠I did want to learn about investing. I want to make more money. But stillâwhy now?â
I took a good look at his face. Something had been off about him since he came back. Like⊠his expression was more awkward than usual. Less natural.
âHeâs definitely hiding something. Itâs gotta be about Charlier.â
Maybe he felt my gaze, because he suddenly touched his face.
âWhat? Why are you looking at me like that?â
âYouâre acting weird today. Are you hiding something?â
ââŠâŠâ
He looked away instead of answering. His ears turned redâhe was definitely flustered.
âHeâs such a bad liar. Heâs hiding something for sure. Just doesnât want to say it.â
ââŠâŠâ
âOh! I get it now!â
That had to be it. He only had one thing worth hiding right now.
When I made a knowing face, Frederic looked surprised. Then he glanced at me⊠and quickly turned his gaze to the couch.
âItâs about Charlier, isnât it? What else would it be?â
ââŠâŠâ
He went over to the couch and sat down, crossing his legs. I leaned against the desk just like he had.
âShe asked you to kick me out of the house, didnât she? But since you couldnât do that, you decided to help me make money so Iâd leave on my own. Right?â
Frederic rested his chin on one hand and stared at me without blinking.
âNot surprising that Charlier would say something like that.â
He didnât like my comment. One of his eyebrows twitchedâbut unlike Leo, he didnât defend Charlier in front of me.
âWhat is surprising is that you didnât throw me out, Frederic.â
âWhat are you saying?â
âYour relationship with Charlier is the most important thing to you. So why didnât you do what she asked? Why didnât you kick me out?â
He swept his hair back with the hand that was on his chin and turned to look out the window.
ââŠBecause I made a promise.â
âA promise? With me? What promise?â
ââŠYou donât remember, but I promised.â
He said something cryptic, then stood up from the couch. I thought heâd come over to me, but instead, he walked toward the bookshelves.
âSo, are you going to learn investing or not?â
âI will! I said I will!â
I turned to face him. Honestly, it was a great opportunity. He offered before I could even ask.
âAlright. If I save up my salary and learn to invest, I could get a small house in a few years.â
âIâll pick books that match your level. Read them and bring me a summary in three days.â
He started pulling books from the shelves and stacked them on the desk. In no time, there were nearly ten books piled up.
Rattle.
âCome here.â
Frederic opened the desk drawer. I walked over to see inside.
âWhoaâŠâ
The drawer was filled with fancy pens and quills, like a collectorâs set.
âShow me your hand.â
He checked my palm and picked out a quill and ink bottle.
âThis one fits you. Try it.â
He handed me a small, elegant quill. It was greenish, with a marble-like texture and engraved nib.
âIt feels perfect! And itâs so pretty. Iâve never seen a pen this beautiful. Can I really use it?â
âItâs yours.â
ââŠ! Wow! Thanks!â
I hugged it to my chest. Iâd never seen or used such a beautiful pen. And it felt like it was made for my hand.
âThe paperâs here. If you want to read everything in three days, youâll have to use all your time. Eat, sleep, and study. No need to talk to me during those three days.â
ââŠO-Okay.â
Frederic seemed different. Charismatic, even. I hadnât seen this side of him since the Forest of Spirits.
I nodded slowly with a strange expression.
âYou can read in your room or here in the study. Wherever is comfortable.â
He tied the books and paper together with string in the shape of a ribbon. His hands moved skillfully.
âFrederic.â
âYeah?â
âWhy arenât you just kicking me out? You couldâve just paid me and sent me away. Why go through all this troubleâŠ?â
âHave you ever earned money outside this house?â
He asked while cutting the string with a small knife.
Well, as Seo Joo-hee, I worked myself to death. I paid college tuition with part-time jobs during my time at a two-year college. But Delphine? Never.
âNo, I havenât.â
âThen have you ever bought a trade ship? Made an investment? Lived on your own money?â
âUh⊠no. This is my first time.â
âThen just learn. If you donât know how to earn or use money, then even if I gave you a fortune and kicked you out, youâd waste it all.â
ââŠâŠâ
Ouch
