TETT | Ch 10

Chapter 10

Emma walked back to her room, thinking hard about what to write down for the emperor.

Still, it felt like a good sign that Kaiyen was finally showing even a little interest in the empress.

“I hope this leads to good things…” she murmured.

She had always felt guilty for not fully keeping the promise she made to Kaiyen’s mother.

But now, maybe she had another chance.

“Lady Dianne… was it right to keep your last wish?”

Even after all these years, Emma could not forget the day that a gentle, beautiful woman died.

“Your Majesty… I do not regret anything… I only did what I had to do…”

On her deathbed, Dianne, Kaiyen’s mother, held the weeping emperor’s hand.

“And it is not a mother’s duty to put such a burden on a child… Please, keep the reason for my death a secret. That is my last request… please…”

Even as she died, Dianne’s heart stayed noble and kind.

She never forgot that she was the mother of two children, and until her last breath, she prayed for their happiness.

But she made one mistake:

She didn’t realize how much her husband loved her—more than anything in the world.

After the empress died, the emperor shut himself away.

He ignored his duties, ignored his children, and sank into grief.

That grief grew so deep that he made a terrible decision.

“Yes… It’s because of him. It’s because of him that Dianne is dead!”

One day, seeing young Kaiyen playing in the inner palace, the emperor pointed at him like an enemy.

“That boy… he killed my Dianne!”

No one could stop the emperor’s rage.

“Why? Why did Dianne have to die? It should have been that boy who died! Why did my Dianne have to go instead…?”

His love had turned into madness.

No one could protect the seven-year-old prince anymore.

“It’s all his fault. Dianne became weak giving birth to him, and then… because of him, she went outside the palace, and because she protected him… she died!”

But of course, Dianne’s death was not Kaiyen’s fault.

It was a sunny spring day when she took the children on a small trip.

Assassins came to kill the prince.

Dianne stepped in front of the blade without hesitation, and the wound weakened her body until it finally failed.

“Why can he still smile when Dianne is gone? I can never be happy again… I’ve lost my Dianne…”

The emperor’s love turned into a dangerous obsession.

He searched for Dianne’s shadow everywhere, cried in his sleep, and woke up remembering her death.

“If Dianne is dead… then he should be dead too!”

His anger grew so twisted that people feared he might kill his son.

Everyone in the palace lived in fear of that day.

“Your Majesty, please… I have a request.”

That was when Count Haier stepped forward.

He volunteered to reclaim the wild Rubeo lands and drive out the barbarians—and asked to take the prince with him.

“Protecting Rubeo means protecting the empire. Having the young prince join us would be an honor.”

Rubeo was considered a place of exile.

Anyone sent there was thought to have no future.

But it was the only way to save the prince from his father’s madness.

“He is no son of mine. Do as you wish.”

The emperor agreed.

To him, sending Kaiyen to Rubeo was punishment, a way to hurt the boy he blamed.

To Count Haier, it was the only way to save the empire’s future.

And so, the innocent young prince was sent away.

He didn’t return to the palace until after the emperor died—seventeen years later.

“Now he’s finally back where he belongs…” Emma whispered with a heavy heart.

The old emperor had loved Dianne so much that it destroyed him, and Kaiyen’s childhood had been ruined because of it.

“Please, watch over him from the heavens, Lady Dianne…”

Now, Emma hoped that Kaiyen’s new interest in the empress would give him a reason to stay in the palace.

The mad father was gone, and Kaiyen had to take back control of an empire that had been toyed with by nobles for 17 years.

When he married and then left without even spending their wedding night, everyone thought no one could keep him in the palace.

But now… There was a small spark of hope.

The next day, the autumn breeze was cool and clear.

Alicia’s day passed calmly.

“Your Majesty, forgive me, but another letter has arrived from the Great Sage of Rukan.”

“Put it in the box.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

There was now a whole box of unopened letters from Rukan.

Alicia felt alive again—and that alone was a big change.

“…More importantly, is there any way to contact the Kingdom of Tristan?”

“It has been so long since we’ve had any contact… It would be difficult right now.”

Alicia sighed. She had expected that answer.

“Right… after my mother married, even she couldn’t contact them, because Rukan forbade personal messages.”

“That is correct.”

Recently, all of Alicia’s thoughts were about leaving this palace.

The emperor didn’t care about the palace or her.

Her future here would be nothing but loneliness and despair.

In her past life, she hadn’t known anything else—so she endured.

But now that she knew better, she could never accept it.

“Then I should take care of something else first.”

Sometimes, even unseen thoughts can move a person’s body.

Looking at Alicia’s bright eyes, anyone could see she was different now.

She wasn’t just enduring life anymore—she was searching for a new future.

“If I need to handle something secretly outside the palace… who could I trust?”

Anes hesitated.

Alicia had grown up in isolated Rukan and had no real friends.

Even as empress, she had never joined any social circles.

“Wouldn’t it be dangerous for Your Majesty to contact anyone outside?”

“No one pays attention to me. What danger?”

“You never know. Lately… I’ve felt eyes watching the empress’s palace.”

Alicia raised an eyebrow. Who would bother watching a powerless empress?

“Maybe you’re just being too careful, Anes.”

“No… I felt it before, but now it’s stronger. Even the servants who handle letters have changed.”

“Servants change all the time.”

“But His Majesty is here in the palace right now. The timing worries me. Please be careful.”

It wasn’t bad advice, so Alicia nodded.

She had no one to rely on, but at least now she knew the truth of her situation.

“This is getting complicated…” Alicia sighed.

“What are you planning, Your Majesty?” Anes asked carefully.

Alicia didn’t answer right away.

She wanted freedom and a peaceful life, but how to reach it… she still had to figure that out.

“At least His Majesty doesn’t care about me. And Rukan doesn’t need me anymore.”

In her last life, being ignored had made her miserable.

But now? It felt like a chance.

“I’ll have to find a way to contact Tristan.”

“Yes, but please be careful. I will think about it too.”

Alicia smiled faintly.

“Shall I bring you tea with milk?” Anes offered.

Before Alicia could reply, Howard knocked on the door urgently.

“Your Majesty… the emperor is on his way here.”

Alicia’s blue eyes widened in surprise.

In her past life, they had barely ever met alone.

Why was he coming so often now?

“Shall I fix your hair, Your Majesty?”

Alicia glanced at her simple appearance.

“There’s no time for that.”

Just then, the sound of movement came from the entrance of the empress’s palace.

Alicia took a deep breath and went to the doorway.

Without fanfare or trumpets, Kaiyen strode in and stood before her.

“Your Majesty,” Alicia said, bowing.

Kaiyen only nodded. He didn’t even tell her to rise, but Alicia had learned not to wait for that. She straightened calmly.

“I was passing by and decided to stop in,” he said in his low, casual voice, sitting down wherever he pleased.

“You may sit too,” he added, gesturing to the sofa.

That small gesture was shocking—he had never done such a thing in her past life.

“Thank you, Your Majesty,” Alicia said softly, sitting down.

Kaiyen’s lips curved into the faintest smile.

What was happening?

She hadn’t even planned her escape yet, but already so many things were different from her past life.

It felt strange.

“It’s about time for tea, isn’t it?” Kaiyen said casually.

He hadn’t just stopped by—he intended to stay for tea.

Alicia’s thoughts spun in confusion.

She couldn’t read him at all.
