~Chapter 38~
Elcayan reached out his hand to Delphina.
âSir Calyx is reliable in many ways. If it’s just the three of us, we should reach the capital quickly.â
The Grand Madam watched them with a pleased smile.
âThere are plenty of excellent maids at the capital townhouse, so donât worry about the banquet preparations.â
âBanquet preparations?â
âYes. Weâll make sure everything is perfect.â
She gave a cold, knowing smile.
âThe emperor, who loves pomp and pageantry, will surely host another grand banquet.â
Delphina was startled.
âCan she really say that out loud like itâs nothing?â
But no one else seemed shocked by the Grand Madamâs bluntness.
Delphina thought to herself:
âThis is actually kind of niceâŠâ
She had never been able to speak her mind so openly, so the Grand Madamâs bold attitude was refreshing.
Elcayan added:
âThe High Priest is expected to attend the banquet this year.â
âThat weak, pathetic man is coming too?â
âYes. Heâs coming to measure the divine power of the children in the temple.â
The Grand Madam clicked her tongue in disapproval.
âThe emperorâs people wonât want to send any priests to the North anyway. Do you think any of those kids will actually choose to go there?â
Delphina joined in:
âDivine power measurements⊠Iâve heard of those.â
The Grand Madamâs expression darkened slightly. Delphina knew why:
âThe North still doesnât have its own temple.â
To establish a temple, at least one high-ranking priest had to stay in the North. But powerful priests always avoided going there.
âEven if someone qualifies this year, they probably wonât want to go to the NorthâŠâ
The Grand Madam turned to Delphina.
âDonât worry about all that. Just enjoy the banquet.â
Delphina bowed her head, feeling mixed emotions. The Grand Madam burst into hearty laughter.
âLuxury is the emperorâs thing. You should enjoy it freely. Even if we tell him not to spend money, heâll do it anyway, wonât he?â
âThatâs true.â
âYouâll be the star of the banquet. Elcayanâwell, I donât knowâbut people say he has a good face. Youâll definitely attract more attention than Ivelina and Kasen.â
Delphina smiled faintly. She had never been the center of attention at any banquet.
âMore like an unwanted guest, honestlyâŠâ
But just like the Grand Madam saidâif she couldnât avoid it, she might as well enjoy it.
âYes, Iâll enjoy myself to the fullest.â
âDonât worry about being judged either. Just by being yourself, everyone will understand. Youâre strong enough to lead the North.â
Delphinaâs heart pounded at those words. The Grand Madamâs faith in her made her feel warm and proud.
âShow everyone your true self.â
âIâll come back safely.â
That moment made everything feel real:
âEven if itâs temporary, Iâm leaving this place.â
But she didnât feel sad.
Sana, Walton, and Alex all waved at her.
âLady Delphina, have a safe trip!â
âWeâll be waiting for your return!â
She realized just how many people were waiting for her to come back.
⊠⊠âŠ
Delphina and Elcayan boarded the carriage together. Being alone with him in an enclosed space felt unfamiliar.
Even though they were engaged, they still had separate rooms and only met during meals.
âWeâve gotten a little closer lately, butâŠâ
Especially after he helped her deal with Kasen, she had felt their relationship grow warmer. Still, they were both too busy to spend much time alone.
âItâs kind of awkward.â
She had always been surrounded by the noisy, warm people of the North. Now that it was just her and Elcayan, the carriage felt too quiet.
âI thought we were close enough to be comfortable by nowâŠâ
Elcayan had always been considerate during her time in the North.
âAre you comfortable?â
âYes, itâs really nice.â
âThe North is harsh. I imagine it wasnât easy for you.â
âNot at all. Everyone was so kind. I didnât feel uncomfortable at all.â
She shook her head with a sincere smile. Compared to the capital, the North had been much more welcoming.
âIâm glad to hear that.â
After a brief pause, Elcayan spoke again.
âYou donât need to worry too much about the banquet. If youâd rather not attend, itâs okay.â
Delphina quickly shook her head.
âNo. I definitely want to go.â
âReally? I thought you disliked banquets.â
He brought it up because he had heard a little about her difficult time at the academy.
âI heard she avoided banquets thereâŠâ
He just wanted to ease her mind.
âActually, I⊠like them.â
âYou do?â
âYes. I always dreamed of dancing with someone I liked.â
ââŠâ
âBut at the academy, I never got the chance to dance. Not even once.â
Elcayanâs expression hardened. Delphina smiled quietly.
She had never danced at any banquet at the academy.
âKasen always gave the first dance to Ivelina.â
Now that she thought about it, it was kind of ridiculous. What kind of fiancĂ© dances with his fiancĂ©eâs cousin instead?
âWell, it doesnât matter anymore.â
Elcayan didnât ask too many questions. He understood now:
âHis silence is out of kindness.â
Delphina softly shared more of her past.
âAt every banquet, Kasen would always dance with Ivelina.â
Elcayanâs face stiffened. She hadnât planned on saying it all out loudâit wasnât a happy memory.
âStill⊠he should know.â
She hadnât realized it before, but Kasen had been a terribly selfish ex-fiancĂ©.
He still thought Delphina had feelings for him. She didnât want Elcayan to misunderstand because of Kasenâs arrogance.
âSo Iâve never danced with anyone at a banquet. Kasen was possessive⊠but only when it came to me.â
Meanwhile, Kasen would happily dance with any young noblewoman he liked.
Delphina never understood that double standard.
Elcayan looked at her and said:
âHeâs a foolish man.â
âWhat?â
âDelphina, people always regret things. Iâve had my share of regrets too.â
ââŠâ
âBut when it mattered most, I made choices I wouldnât regret. Thatâs the difference between me and him.â
Elcayan had made mistakes in his youthâbut he knew how to prioritize the important things.
He spoke with confidence:
âKasen will regret this.â
He would regret letting Delphina go. Seeing her now, beside someone else, would make him feel something he couldnât ignore.
Delphina smiled faintly.
âYou think so?â
âIâm sure of it.â
âBut⊠it doesnât matter anymore. Kasen isnât important to me now.â
âThatâs⊠really good to hear.â
âMy dream now is to open a restaurant somewhere peaceful. So getting involved with powerful or noble men isnât a good idea.â
She spoke honestly about her simple dream.
âOh, and⊠if a man is too handsome, thatâs kind of overwhelming too.â
Sure, it had felt nice when Elcayan outshined Kasen in looks. But that didnât mean she was attracted to good looks anymore.
âWhat matters is the heart, after all.â
No matter how good-looking someone wasâif they were like Kasen, she wanted nothing to do with them.
When she said being âtoo handsomeâ was a bit much, Elcayanâs lips tightened slightly.
