Chapter 10.
1.Becoming the Villainâs Secretary (10)
Of course. As expected from members of the same bloodline.
Can you two leave me out of this power struggle? And seriously, it’s not some weird romantic triangle or anything…
I could practically hear my hair falling out.
I looked back and forth between Helwid, who had tightly wrapped his arm around my waist, and Indellis, who was gripping the hem of my clothes, and I let out a deep sigh.
âYour Majesty, if I get quartered or hanged because of His Highness, I wonât be able to stay by your side anymore, right?â
âThatâs right.â
âAnd Your Highness, if I get crushed or branded because of His Majesty, I wonât be able to ever hold your hand again, right?â
âCorrect.â
âThen how about we wisely hold one hand each?â
Ha! Solomon himself could descend and I would still win this one.
The two of them didnât look thrilled, but they reluctantly agreed.
âThen I get the upper body.â
âFine. I get the lower body. The hands are hanging down anywayâlower bodyâs domain, right?â
âArms are attached to the upper body.â
Excuse me? That was not part of my plan. Why are they dividing me like property?
Helwid held me by the waist like he was escorting me, while Indellis clung to my index and middle finger.
Then he glanced between Helwidâs huge hand and his own tiny hand and scowled.
Apparently he was annoyed he couldnât fully grab my palm because his hands were small.
He looked so cute that I squeezed his hand. His scrunched expression relaxed a bit.
Easy to read, that one.
âLetâs go.â
âDo you prefer the rose garden or the greenhouse?â
âI was kidnapped in the rose garden once, so how about the rear garden?â
âRear garden sounds good.â
And just like that, the three of us headed to the garden⊠peacefully?
Even after surviving that deadly lunchtime ordeal, and even after a break, I was exhausted.
Everything had been somewhat harmoniousâuntil the lunch boxes were opened.
Helwid, who had turned the picnic into a warzone, hummed as he brewed coffee.
âYour Majesty.â
âIâm listening.â
âIâm listening too.â
Because of course they answer at the same time. Same bloodline, same energy.
âWas it really that hard to give up the octopus-shaped sausage?â
It really was.
The lunch boxes the chef had prepared contained ten octopus sausages.
Ten.
We each eat three… I generously give up one… which still means Helwid and Indellis inevitably clash.
Youâd think, as the older brother, as the Emperorâhe would yield.
âYeah.â
ââŠSorry?â
âI didnât want to give up the octopus sausage.â
The smiling jerk ate four.
âYouâre twenty-six years old…â
âWhat did you just say?â
âHuh? N-nothing!â
âIâm pretty sure you said, âUgh. Twenty-six years oldâŠââ
Helwid handed me a cup of freshly brewed coffee with a soft smile.
Why ask when you heard everything?!
âSeriously. Did it feel that good to steal His Highnessâs sausage?â
âItâs not the sausage that matters.â
ââŠWhat?â
âIt matters that I didnât yield.â
What?
Helwid sipped his coffee, speaking as if delivering a grand philosophy.
âWe carry the noble blood of the Golden Dynasty. I am the Emperor, Indellis is the Prince. He comes after me. And this hierarchy must be absolute. The only thing that disrupts the order is rebellion.â
He took another sip.
âSo I must win in every conflict against the prince. There is no such thing as yielding.â
âEven⊠in a sausage war?â
âEven in a sausage war.â
All that flowery speech, just to justify a twenty-six-year-old refusing to yield to an eight-year-old.
Ridiculous.
âIt may sound childish, but thatâs how an Emperor survives. I must never show weakness.â
âI didnât say anything.â
âBut you thought I went too far.â
Helwid showed a bittersweet smile.
âMy secretary wouldnât understand.â
Heâs rightâI donât. I donât get living life by crushing others with hierarchical power.
Iâve lived competitively too, but never with swords literally pointed at my back.
StillâŠ
Indellis wiping away tears because he lost the sausage warâbothered me.
âBut⊠for a sausage? Just one? Really just one?â
Helwid looked genuinely puzzled.
âYouâre strange.â
âHuh?â
âYou get so worked up over something thatâs not even your business.â
âThatâs because Iâm nosy.â
He stared at me like Iâd said something absurd.
âItâs true!â
He chuckled lightly.
I smiled back.
âIâm an only child. Itâs rare to see siblings. I just felt bad, thatâs all.â
â…Bad, huh.â
Helwid frowned slightly and murmured.
âI donât want to be harsh with my younger brother either. Heâs still a kid. Itâs not right to treat him cruelly.â
Says the man who has already committed numerous acts of cruelty.
âBut I told you. I canât show even a crack he might slip his blade through later.â
âBut His Highness is behaving now.â
âYou uproot weeds before they grow.â
Thatâs⊠not logic. Thatâs just tyranny.
I squinted at him. He snapped his fingers, suddenly inspired.
Uh-oh.
ââŠYouâre going to make me do something, arenât you.â
âSince you already know, cooperate willingly.â
âHow does it always end up like this?!â
âBecause Iâm the Emperor.â
Helwid ignored my internal screaming and continued smoothly:
âThink of it as a good opportunity. We brothers never had anything in common. But now we doâyou. With you as our common connection, isnât improving our relationship reasonable?â
No.
You two fix your family issues yourselves.
He smiled sweetly.
âWeâll be counting on you to mend our brotherly bond.â
Damn it.
I knew my dreams felt cursed last nightâŠ
âMy secretary, what food do you like?â
âWhat food do you hate?â
âWhat dessert do you prefer?â
âWhat tea do you drink?â
âWhat academic field interests you?â
âWhat hobbies do you have?â
During my heavenly lunch break, while eating the lunch Dad packed at dawn, I put my fork down.
ââŠExcuse me.â
âWeâre listening.â
âWeâre listening.â
Same voice. Same timing. Same blond hair sparkling like honey.
âWhat are you doing?â
âWhat do you mean? Isnât it obvious?â
âDidnât you agree to help?â
âI thought you agreed to help us.â
âI mean, yes, butâwhat does that have to do with this?â
âWhy are you so slow today?â
âDid a homunculus show up to work in your place?â
Indellis pinched my cheekâlightly, but still.
âI AM me. Not a homunculus. And anywayâhow does this relate to helping?â
âIt relates perfectly. You are our only common link. To bond over you, we need more information about you.â
Helwid smiled radiantly.
I turned to Indellis.
He smiled the same radiant smile.
You two are already close. Seriously.
My hair roots tingledâa sign of incoming hair loss.
âFine. Come back later. After I eat.â
âBut later we work.â
âYes, work during work hours. Donât slack.â
âThen I should eat during eating hours.â
I glared daggers at them. Helwid waved soothingly.
âLunch break is for resting and eating.â
âSo youâre not leaving?â
âWeâre not leaving.â
He smiled kindly.
âWeâll ask questions. You keep eating.â
ââŠArenât you two going to eat?â
How am I supposed to eat peacefully when youâre interrogating me?!
But the brothers only smiled wider.
You’re already close. Youâre both so close already. Stop it. Please.
âSo? What food do you like?â
âWhat about food you hate? Favorite tea? Hm? Hm?â
Iâm going insane.
Beautiful faces leaned closer, their mouths revving up to unleash another barrage of questions.
My eyelid twitched.
For the first time ever, I was actually looking forward to work.
