Chapter 07
[Contractor! Wake up!]
Harryâs urgent voice echoed in my head, dragging me out of a deep sleep.
âWake up? Is it morning already?â
I forced my heavy eyelids open and looked around. But the room was still dark.
âWhat? Itâs still night.â
I grumbled and tried to push Harry away, who had come right up to the bed. But pushing away a massive dog was no easy feat.
[I said wake up! Someoneâs in the sitting room!]
[Who would come at this hour?]
[Thatâs exactly why itâs strange! What if itâs an assassin? Get up already!]
[An assassin? Why would anyone send an assassin after me?]
I reached out and patted Harry like I was calming down a fussy child.
[Youâre imagining things, Harry. Go back to sleep.]
[I donât make mistakes like that! Iâm the Blue Mage Theo Harris!]
[Yes, yes. I know youâre a great and mighty mage. Now sleep.]
[Ugh, unbelievable!]
Harry gave up on convincing me and jumped off the bed. A moment later, I heard the soft sound of paws padding toward the sitting room.
âFinally gave up.â
I felt victorious over Harry and happily sank back into sleep. Or at least, I tried to.
âKyaaa!â
If not for the sharp scream that rang from the sitting room.
The shrill cry jolted me fully awake.
âWait⊠was Harry right? Is there really an assassin?â
Thinking about it, there were quite a few people whoâd want Ivria gone.
âDid Catherineâs people send one?â
It made sense. Someone furious over Ivria cutting off lumber trade ties could very well send an assassin to erase her from the world.
âOr maybe Luke?â
If anyone could send an assassin, itâd be Luke, the head of the underground information guild.
âYeah, must be Luke.â
Concluding that, I slowly sat up. Oddly, I didnât feel the slightest sense of danger.
âWhy should I worry? My pet is the Great Mage of the Blue Flame. All Iâd have to do is wish to live, and Iâd be saved.â
With that comforting thought, I climbed out of bed and tiptoed toward the sitting room.
Inside, Harry was already growling fiercely at someone. And that someoneâs face was very familiar.
ââŠEmma?â
âI-Iâll give you this, so please, just be quiet.â
Emma, trembling, held out a piece of chicken toward Harry.
Apparently, sheâd come prepared, knowing I kept a dog in my room.
Harry stopped growling and stared at the chicken.
âIf he were a real dog, thatâd be a smart move.â
But unfortunately, he was a demon pretending to be one.
âOf course he wouldnât fall forââ
Just as I was thinking that, Harry calmly accepted the chicken and started eating it.
âHe fell for chicken?â
My jaw dropped.
[Harry! How could you fall for that?]
[I havenât eaten since you summoned me! Iâm starving!]
[So you eat now? In this situation?]
[Well, maybe you shouldnât have summoned me and starved me, then!]
[I didnât know demons needed three meals a day!]
[Good thing you know now. Take note for next time.]
Harry ignored my scolding and focused on devouring the chicken. He looked so content that even I started feeling hungry watching him.
âThank goodness⊠he likes it,â Emma whispered in relief.
With Harry calm, she started moving againâstraight toward the fireplace.
The fire blazed brightly as she crouched before it, determination etched across her face.
Seeing the lamp in her hand, I immediately understood what she was trying to do.
âSheâs taking the fire.â
She carefully tried to transfer the flame from the fireplace into her lamp.
âAll that fuss because of this?â
The tension drained from my body, and I chuckled.
âMight as well ask for a snack while Iâm up.â
The smell of roasted chicken had fully awoken my appetite.
âEmma.â
âKyaaaaaah!â
Her piercing scream echoed again the moment I spoke.
âAh!â
âWhaâ! Whatâs your problem!â
My own startled yell was drowned out by a much deeper voiceâone that could only belong to Harry.
I turned to him, incredulous. Heâd dropped the chicken and was staring wide-eyed at me.
[Harry. Did you just say, âWhaâ! Whatâs your problem!â âŠout loud?]
He averted his gaze guiltily.
[âŠI was startled, okay? Reflex. You screamed too!]
[Iâm human, I can scream! Youâre a demon, you canât!]
[Youâve got weird prejudices about demons. Aside from being powerful and fabulous, weâre basically human.]
[Donât try to sneak in self-praise right now.]
I sighed and turned back to Emma. She sat frozen on the floor, eyes wide and dazed.
âA talking animal in my room. She probably thinks Iâm a witch.â
I glared at Harry.
[How are you going to fix this?]
[Hmm⊠Letâs just say it was your voice.]
[She wonât believe that!]
[Then should I just kill her? Easiest solution. You keep your secret, I have some fun. Win-win?]
His eyes gleamed with genuine enthusiasm.
[Stop spouting nonsense.]
I clicked my tongue and ignored him. As expected, he was useless.
âGuess Iâll have to fix this myself.â
âEmma.â
She flinched and immediately flattened herself to the floor.
âP-p-please forgive me!â
âForgive you?â
I tilted my head. What on earth was she asking forgiveness for?
âMaybe sheâs apologizing for hearing something strange?â
Before I could ask, she continued, even more desperate.
âIâm sorry! Iâve committed a terrible sin!â
âWhat sin?â
âI didnât mean to! I was just⊠so desperate! Please, show mercy! Iâll never steal again!â
âSteal?â
Now that was unexpected.
Sure, this room was full of expensive-looking items. Anyone could be tempted.
âJust one trinket from here could fetch a fortune.â
But Emma was my maid. If something went missing, sheâd be the first suspect.
âShe doesnât seem that stupid, though.â
Her speech and demeanor showed she was educatedâdefinitely not a petty thief.
So if she had tried to steal something, she mustâve been truly desperate.
I crouched down and rested my chin on my hand.
âWhat exactly were you trying to take?â
âP-please, have mercy. I swear it wonât happen againââ
I raised my hand to cut her off.
âNo. Forget mercy for now.â
âEek!â
Her face went pale.
âGreat. She probably thinks Iâm about to execute her.â
This damn villainous faceâno matter what I said, it always sounded like a threat.
I quickly clarified.
âJust take it. Whatever it was.â
ââŠWhat?â
âThe thing you were trying to take. Go ahead and take it. Iâll give it to you.â
ââŠW-what?â
She blinked in disbelief. I shrugged.
The room glittered with luxurious objects.
âBut honestlyâŠâ
âWhatever it was, itâs probably worthless to me anyway.â
Maybe it meant something to the real Ivriaâa gift, a keepsake. But to me, a stranger in her body, these things had no meaning.
If they were precious to Emma, thoughâŠ
âWell, if it was important enough for you to risk stealing, then fine. You can have it.â
And in exchange, sheâd pretend sheâd heard nothing tonight.
âA perfectly reasonable trade.â
I smiled, satisfied with my plan. Of course, my smile probably looked villainous again.
âYouâll really give it to me?â Emma asked timidly.
I nodded firmly. Her eyes filled with hope.
âYouâll really give me⊠the fire?â
âYeah, I said I wouldâwait. What?â
My head snapped up.
âThe fire?â
Not jewels. Not art. Not silverware. Fire?
âYou came to steal fire?â
Emmaâs brief hope vanished, her shoulders slumping.
âI knew it. Itâs not allowed, after all.â
I stared at her, dumbfounded. She looked genuinely heartbrokenâover fire.
âIf you needed fire, you couldâve just asked. I thought you were trying to steal something valuable.â
I picked up the fallen lamp and candle, lit it from the fireplace, and placed it inside. The flame burned brightly.
âHere. Take it.â
She hesitated.
âYou said you needed fire, right?â
âYes, but⊠are you really giving it to me this easily?â
âOf course. Itâs just fire.â
âBut itâs the mystical fire that burns black ironwood.â
âItâs still just⊠fire.â
It wasnât like sharing it would reduce my own supply.
âDidnât the steward already take some earlier? He said he was going to share it.â
âThe Baron ordered that no fire was to leave the manor. Even inside, only certain places are allowed to use it. Servants like me arenât permitted anywhere near it.â
I started to understand.
The Baron had tightly restricted the use of this fire, so Emma had come to meâsomeone she could approach freelyâto get some.
âBut why would he restrict it that much?â
Wouldnât it be better to distribute it, keep everyone warm?
âThere must be a reason⊠but could it really be more important than keeping people alive?â
I couldnât figure it out and gave up trying.
I stood, holding the lamp.
âCome on, Emma. Letâs go.â
âGo⊠where?â
âWhere else? To where the fireâs needed.â
âTo where itâs neededâŠ?â
âThe Baron didnât forbid me from taking it outside. And this is my fire, so I can do what I want with it.â
I lifted the lamp and smiled.
âIn return, just forget everything you saw and heard tonight. Deal?â
âEverything I saw and heardâŠ?â
âYeah. All of it.â
I glanced meaningfully at Harry.
After a momentâs hesitation, Emma nodded slightly.
Deal struck.
