Episode 8
âWhat is the real reason?â
ââŠâŠâ
âYou could at least tell me that much.â
Lichtâs tone was smoothâlike a sweet song meant to seduce reason itself, brushing lightly against Aylaâs heart.
Telling him the reason wasnât hard.
What worried her was⊠whether someone like Licht, a royal, could even understand that reason.
When Ayla first possessed this body, she made herself a promise:
âIâll just follow the bare minimum laws. Nothing more.â
There was no need to live cautiously or bound by rules, not even in this world sheâd fallen into.
But now he wanted her to enter the palaceâ
the most suffocating place of all, where every breath was measured, every step prescribed.
Her face naturally twisted into a frown.
Let Licht misunderstand however he liked; she didnât care.
Actually, the more he misunderstood, the better.
âI never want to set foot in a place where I have to obey every ruleâ
from how I dress to how I walk.â
And besidesâ
âIsnât Licht the only one who benefits here? He needs me, but I donât need him.
Having him around doesnât profit me in the slightestâit only gets in the way.â
No matter how she looked at it, his proposal was a losing deal for her.
He had nothing she wanted, and his offer would only chain her down.
Royal power? Prestige?
Her family, the Count of Cablet, was one of the wealthiest houses in the entire empire.
They lacked for nothingâmoney, comfort, status.
âMy brothers once said our fortune could last for centuries, even if no one worked another day.â
So really, there was no reason for Ayla to accept his offer.
But she couldnât exactly explain all that outright.
Knowing Lichtâs sharp mind, she decided to give a simple answer he might take at face value.
âBecause itâs⊠troublesome.â
âTroublesome?â
Licht narrowed his brows slightly, as if confirming heâd heard right.
She clarified, her voice calm but firm.
âYes. The palace requires following countless trivial rules.â
ââŠâŠâ
âAnd the idea of memorizing and following them allâitâs horrifying.â
Licht couldnât help but let out a dry laugh.
Heâd been born into those very rules, raised within their cage, and had never thought of them as horrifying before.
It was⊠a refreshing, almost shocking perspective.
âIf she dislikes it, then Iâll simply make sure she doesnât have to do it.â
With that thought, he offered his âsolution.â
âIf you become my personal healer, you wonât need to follow any of those bothersome rules.â
ââŠâŠâ
âYouâd be my personâwho would dare say otherwise?â
His tone was perfectly arrogant, exactly as sheâd expected.
Ayla shook her head slowly.
âTo be honest, âtroublesomeâ was just an excuse.â
Her lavender eyes curved slightly like a crescent moon, meeting his cold red gaze.
Her tone, however, turned resolute.
âI just want to live freely, this life.â
âThis life?â
âYes. I feel like⊠my past life must have been a miserable one.â
Licht frowned, clearly not understanding her words.
Ayla didnât bother explainingâshe only lifted her shoulders in a casual shrug.
âAnyway, I dislike being bound by rules or authority.â
ââŠâŠâ
âSo Iâll have to decline your offer, Your Highness. I think youâll find someone else faster.â
Licht exhaled softly through his nose, the faintest sound escaping him as his fingers tapped lightly on his kneeâlike a pianist brushing the keys.
Ayla knew that gesture well.
It meant he was thinkingâsomething he did unconsciously.
Sheâd planned to use it as a tell whenever she had to negotiate with him again.
After a brief silence, Licht blinked once, twiceâslowly.
Surprisingly, he still looked calm.
âHe really is an unshakable man.â
Ayla clicked her tongue quietly.
Then he said something she never expected.
âIf thatâs what you want⊠then Iâll give it to you.â
âPardon?â
âYour freedom. Iâll give it to you.â
Ayla blinked in disbelief.
âHeâll⊠give me freedom? Thatâs not something you can give, idiot.â
Her lips curved faintly, unconsciously betraying her thoughts.
Licht noticed and leaned forward, his voice firming with convictionâclearly thinking she was swayed.
âIf youâll just stay by my side, Iâll give you anything you want.â
ââŠâŠâ
âWhatever you need, say it. Iâll make sure you never lack for anything.â
He spoke as if it were the simplest thing in the worldâ
his voice brimming with the arrogance of someone born to power.
Ayla suddenly remembered why sheâd preferred Dainhart, the second male lead, when sheâd first read this story.
Licht had always been loved.
Heir to the throne, blessed with power and favor since birthâhe had never lacked anything.
And she hated that.
Noâshe envied it.
âBecause I used to be poor. Living hand to mouth every dayâŠâ
Even after possessing Aylaâs body, there were still moments she wondered if this life was real.
The comfort, the wealthâit all felt borrowed.
To think that people like Licht were born into it made her chest tighten with quiet resentment.
Thatâs when she drew her line clearly.
âNo, Your Highness. Thereâs nothing I want from you.â
âThenââ
âAnd I will not become your healer.â
ââŠâŠâ
âAlso, youâre mistaken. The âfreedomâ you speak of and the freedom I desire⊠are not the same thing.â
âNot the same?â
âYes.â
Lichtâs brow furrowed slightly.
Had the meaning of âfreedomâ changed without his knowing? Impossible.
He stared at her, silently urging her to explain.
Ayla obliged.
âYou said you would give me freedom, correct?â
âThatâs right.â
âBut true freedom isnât something that can be given.â
Licht tilted his head.
âFreedom isnât something granted by others.
It means to live without external restraintsâto act as you please.â
ââŠâŠâ
âThe freedom you offer, Your Highness, is just another kind of leash disguised as a gift.â
âThatâs⊠quite an exaggeration.â
âNot at all. No one ever told you that, did they? Thatâs why you donât realize it.â
No one had ever dared speak to a royal like this.
Even Ayla knew she was treading dangerous ground.
But she wasnât just Aylaâshe was a possessor.
And because of that, she could say what no one else dared.
She decided to end things once and for all.
âUp until now, Your Highness has always gotten what you wanted. Always done as you pleased.â
ââŠâŠâ
âBut this time⊠youâll get neither.â
Her lavender eyes gleamed with fierce resolve, though her lips carried a gentle smile.
âIf anyone tries to break my wingsâ
even if itâs the man destined to be the Empireâs sunâ
I will never forgive them.â
âThat almost sounds like a threat of revenge.â
âIf it comes to that, then yes.â
ââŠâŠâ
âIâm not like you, Your Highness. I have nothing to lose.â
The more a person has, the more cowardly they become.
But Licht, despite having everything, showed no hint of fear.
Thatâs why everyone in the novel had been mistaken about himâ
believing he was strong enough to protect everything he loved.
âIf only they knew the truth.â
Unlike the others, Ayla knew his weaknessâ
and that gave her courage.
No countâs daughter could normally speak this way to a crown prince.
But she knew the truth: if she refused to heal him, he could never truly control her.
Understanding her defiance, Licht let out a low chuckle and nodded slowly.
âYouâre right. I do have much to lose.â
ââŠâŠâ
âBut you misunderstand me as well. Iâve no intention of clipping your wings.â
ââŠâŠâ
âI dislike cruelty.â
Then his smile faded, and a cold glint flickered in his crimson eyes.
âBut⊠there are always exceptions.â
