Chapter 40
I reached Lukeâs room in no time, but mustering the courage to enter took far longer.
ââŠâ
I had already snapped at him earlier, and frankly, I had no desire to see him again. Still, I needed that medicine.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open.
âI forgot something.â
As expected, Nayla was there with him.
âOf course. I knew she was heading this way when we crossed paths earlier.â
Luke, emboldened by Naylaâs presence, glared at me with open hostility.
âYou forgot something?â
I nodded, keeping my voice steady.
âYes. That.â
Fortunately, I didnât have to search for itâLuke was already holding the bottle in his hand. I strode forward and snatched it from him.
âI left this here earlier. Iâm taking it back.â
Lukeâs face twisted like heâd just swallowed twenty cockroaches.
âBullshit.â
âExcuse me?â
âThatâs Naylaâs painkiller. Hand it over.â
My mind blanked for a second.
âWhat is he talking about? I just left this here minutes ago.â
I considered the possibility that he was still half-asleepâor maybe the beating had scrambled his brain.
âI have no idea what youâre sayingâŠâ
I was already wasting too much time on him. Ignoring his nonsense, I turned to leave.
Thenâ
Luke, who had barely been able to sit up earlier, suddenly lunged and wrenched the bottle from my hand.
âWhat the hell? Are you insane?â
âYou think Iâd just let you steal what Nayla gave me?â
âWhat are you talking about? Nayla gave it to you?â
Baffled, I glanced at Nayla.
Her face had gone deathly pale.
Ah.
âSo thatâs her game.â
She had liedâclaimed the medicine as her own. And Luke, the ever-gullible fool, had fallen for it.
A dry laugh escaped me.
âThat medicine isnât Naylaâs. I left it here earlier.â
âOh, here we go again. If youâre trying to paint Nayla as a liarââ
âNayla,â I cut in, âcare to list the ingredients?â
Her pallor worsened.
She was obsessed with her imageâand now she was cornered.
âI⊠I donât know. I just bought itâŠâ
âReally?â
Her shoulders relaxed slightly, thinking sheâd dodged the question.
âI know every ingredient,â I said. âBecause I made it.â
Silence.
A normal person wouldâve fled in shame. But Nayla, ever the fighter, dug in.
âHow can you prove that? You could list anything!â
âThe label.â
Her pupils shrank.
I turned to Luke.
âFlip it over. I wrote all thirteen herbs on the back. Iâll recite them nowâcheck if they match.â
To his credit, Luke actually looked.
I took a breath and listed them.
âLadyâs mantle, morpheus root, wild lettuce, lungwort⊠and a bit of honey for sweetness. Well?â
Lukeâs face drained of color.
ââŠItâs exact. So you did leave this?â
âYes.â
Luke wasnât looking at me anymore. His gaze locked onto Nayla, waitingâbeggingâfor her to deny it.
But Nayla just clutched her skirt, silent.
âNayla,â Luke finally croaked. âThen what you said earlier wasâŠ?â
He couldnât even finish the sentence.
I almost felt bad for him. Almost.
Naylaâs response, when it came, was pathetic.
âI⊠just wanted you to like me moreâŠâ
âSo you lied?â I pressed.
Her eyes flashed with venomâjust for a second. Then she bolted.
âNayla!â Luke called after her, but she was already gone.
Exhausted, I held out my hand.
âThe medicine. Now.â
This time, he handed it over without protest.
With the spiritâs power, our ship cut through the water unnaturally fast.
âFurl the sails!â I ordered. âThe currentâs doing the work now.â
The crew watched in awe as the coastline blurred past. Weâd make it home in days, not weeks.
Nathan, leaning against the railing, shot me a proud smile. I winked back.
Everything was perfectâ
Until a panicked shout shattered the peace.
âEmergency! That noblemanâthe one who got beaten? Heâs taken a turn for the worse!â
