Episode 1
It was very early in the morning when a young man stood before his bedroom window.
He gazed out at the scene beyond the glass.
The apartment complex in Sillim-dong looked utterly ordinary for a weekday morning.
A few people hurried through the narrow alleyways, chased by time itself.
But the young manâs face shone as if he were beholding the most breathtaking view in the world.
âEarth, South Korea, Seoul, Sillim-dong⊠my home.â
How long had he yearned for this sight?
How many years had he wandered, clinging to the single wish of returning here?
How many trials and hardships had he endured?
It had already been a week since his return to Earthâ
yet looking out that window still filled him with joy and wonder.
âI finally came backâŠâ
He was smiling to himself, almost looking delirious, whenâ
âKangjun.â
The door swung open, and his older sister, Lee Soobin, appeared.
âI have to leave early for work this week, so could you feed Seol her baby food while I get ready?â
âGot it.â
âAnd while youâre feeding her, make sure you eat breakfast too. Oh, and help the elder eat as well. I made kimchi stewâjust heat it up. Donât forget to check the gas valveâŠâ
Kangjun nodded and gently cut in.
âIâve already taken note of all that, so you neednât worry.â
âIâll be back right after work. Keep an eye on the house, and if anything happens, call me immediatelyâŠâ
Soobin paused, then continued in a more serious tone.
âKangjun, youâre still⊠very confused, arenât you?â
âNot at all. Iâm perfectly fine.â
âNo, youâre not. You must be.â
âI said Iâm reallyââ
She looked at him with a mixture of sadness and worry.
âAfter being trapped inside a Gate for years and only just returning home, itâd be stranger not to be shaken.â
âAs Iâve said many times, I wasnât âtrappedâ in a Gate. I was suddenly summoned to a place called the Anux Continentââ
âRight, and you said you were some kind of emperor there? That the elder you brought home was your advisor who helped you govern a kingdom?â
Kangjun nodded energetically, his voice full of excitement.
âExactly! Thatâs right!â
But Soobinâs expression remained sorrowful.
âIâve read a few cases like yours. Most people who survive after being trapped in a Gate suffer from severe PTSD.â
âWhatâŠ?â
âSome lose their sanity or even become mute. You and the elder only show mild paranoia, which is⊠actually lucky.â
Soobin firmly believed that her brother and the elderly man were both âGate survivors.â
There had been many who were sucked into dimensional riftsâso-called Gatesâand, years later, miraculously returned alive.
âCome to think of it⊠the time Kangjun disappeared was right around the first Gate incidentâŠâ
After her brother vanished, the world changed dramatically.
Dimensional cracks began appearing everywhere, and scholars started calling them âGates.â
From those Gates came monstersâcreatures modern weapons struggled to contain.
Fortunately, some humans awakened supernatural powers that could fight them.
These new humans, the Awakened, became humanityâs front line of defense.
At first, nations were helplessâtoo little power, too little knowledge, no organization.
But humanity learned. Slowly but steadily, it adapted.
They discovered that clearing a Gate prevented the Wave Phenomenonâthe surge of monsters spilling out.
They also learned that many materials from beyond the Gates had immense scientific and industrial value.
Eventually, order and systems were established.
Associations and institutions arose everywhere to train and manage the Awakened.
And so, humankind became richer and stronger than before the Gatesâ
but also more divided.
A ruthless world where strength alone determined wealth and fame.
Meanwhile, Kangjunâs face twisted with disbelief.
âEven if youâre my only sister, itâs rather rude to treat me like some madmanâŠâ
He was clearly offended, but decided against arguing further.
âWell⊠even to me, it all sounds absurd. No amount of explanation could ever convince her.â
Soobin clasped his hands gently.
âKangjun, Iâm just happy you came back alive. But now you have to try to fit into society again.â
Kangjun murmured, almost to himself:
âSocietyâŠâ
Then smiled faintly.
âYes, I have to adapt.â
For centuries, he had dreamed of nothing but an ordinary life on Earth.
He had once held unimaginable power, vast treasures, absolute authorityâ
and yet, at the end of all desire, he had found only emptiness.
Though three hundred years had passed for him on Anux, only three years had passed on Earth.
âA perfect balance of fate,â he thought.
Now all he wanted was to return to the simple life heâd lostâ
the ordinary mid-twenties man heâd once been before being thrown into another world.
âAdapt. Start over.â
Soobin squeezed his hands tighter.
âThree years may not sound long, but the worldâs changed so muchâyouâll need time.â
âIs that so?â
âBut weâll get through it together. Oh, and about the elderâŠâ
She glanced toward the closed door.
âHeâs welcome to stay here until he gets in touch with his family. Just⊠help him feel comfortable, okay?â
âReally? You donât have to go that far.â
âWe canât just throw out an old man with nowhere to go, can we? Iâll do my best to keep things together until both of you are settled. You just focus onââ
Kangjun tilted his head.
âOn⊠recovery?â
âI-I mean treatmentâno, I meanâŠâ
She trailed off, fumbling for words, before blurting out:
âAdaptation! Focus on adapting!â
âOf course.â
âWow, look at the time alreadyâŠâ
Checking her watch, Soobin hurried toward the door.
âAnyway, Iâm counting on you, okay? Iâve got to get ready for work. Feed Seol properly, and take care of the elder.â
âDonât worry, leave it to me.â
With a towel over her wet hair, she left the room.
Kangjun followed a moment later, stepping into the living roomâ
âonly to see the elderly man seated at the dining table, scribbling furiously in a notebook.
The moment he noticed Kangjun, the old man jumped up and exclaimed:
âMy lord!â
Kangjun sighed.
âWhat are you doing this early in the morning?â
âNothing else, my lord. I merely wished to resume documenting your every move, and thus began preparingââ
âStop. Just stop.â
Kangjun frowned, then glanced downward.
There, sitting on the living room floor, a little girl was playing with her dolls.
She was beautifulâso beautiful it was easy to imagine how stunning sheâd be when grown.
Soobin had said that little girl was her daughter.
âI still canât believe itâŠâ
He had vanished before anyone even knew of her existence.
Her motherâKangjunâs former girlfriendâhad died giving birth.
His memories of her were faint: a name, a few fleeting moments.
Until recently, he hadnât even known the child existed.
So while paternal love didnât hit him instantly, he did feel a sense of duty.
âYes⊠Iâll take responsibility.â
He wanted nothing more now than a quiet, ordinary lifeâ
to lay down his crown, his power, his past.
âRaising my child⊠thatâs a kind of normal life too.â
Lost in thought, he was suddenly brought back by a sound.
âBba?â
The child babbled, looking straight at him.
Kangjun knelt down, gently stroking her hair.
âYour hair is tied so beautifully.â
Soobin, adjusting her outfit in front of a mirror, smiled at the sight.
âHe already looks like such a gentle dad.â
But her smile froze a second later.
âIncidentally,â Kangjun added, âIâm quite skilled with knots. Back in my empire, I used to tie the ropes used for hanging traitors.â
âHa⊠hang?â
âYes, you see, to break the neck cleanly in one go, there are certain knotting techniquesââ
âKANGJUN!â
Soobin rushed over and smacked his back repeatedly.
âWhat on earth are you telling a child?!â
âI merely sought to educate her as a father shouldââ
âEnough! Just go warm up her baby food!â
âGood grief⊠so difficult,â he muttered as he shuffled to the stove.
Meanwhile, the old man mumbled to himself, writing rapidly.
âWhen His Majesty spoke to the princess about execution knots, Her Grace Soobin struck His Majestyâs back thrice in outrage. When His Majesty inquired as to the reasonââ
âDidnât I tell you not to write down every little thing?â
âHer Grace exclaimed, âWhat are you saying to a child?!â Despite His Majestyâs protests, sheââ
âAre you seriously ignoring me and writing all of it?!â
Watching the two bicker, Soobin couldnât help but laugh quietly.
âStill⊠Iâm just so thankful.â
She doubted her brother would easily readjust to society, or that heâd make a great father anytime soonâ
âBut he came back alive. Thatâs enough.â
Just being able to see him again filled her heart with gratitude.
âIf I stay strong, everything will work out somehow.â
Her eyes drifted toward a pile of unpaid bills stacked on the table.
She exhaled a long, weary sigh, then forced a bright smile.
âIâm off!â
As she stepped out the doorâ
âHm?â
Kangjun turned his head, his gaze falling on the same pile of bills his sister had looked at moments before.
